I always thought this was as fast as possible, not good ending :/

Since this is an RPG, it is usually best to aim for the best ending. We definitely wouldn't accept one with the good and one with the bad. Besides, getting the best ending shouldn't take much longer than getting the bad ending in this game.

since there are now new classifications, could a "bad ending" (not using Agni against the Goddess) be accepted?

Is anyone able to describe the method to obtain DragonSD in Breath of Fire hinted at here:

I'm roughly 60% through the video right now and I realized something that I should have realized much earlier. Why haven't you gotten the Dragon Sword yet? You can get that I believe before you get Bo. If not sometime after. Definitely before you gain your 4th player. EDIT: I couldn't remember where the sword was exactly at the time I said this, but now I know you definitely need Bo to get it. Maybe Ill create a video to show you how to get it early on. I believe you can get the Slab early as well.

The way I remember it, you need to have Rod5 in order to fish the Dragon Sword out of the well outside of Romero. Breath of Fire Walkthrough: RPG Classics http://shrines.rpgclassics.com/snes/bof1/walkthrough/walkthrough6.shtml Otherwise, I have no idea how else you could get it -- unless there was some way to luck manipulate with a Rod4, or lower.

Indeed, Rod5 is the only way I know how. As far as I'm aware, it's a straight equipment check and is not probability based. However, during the time frame specified in kramathorn's post, between acquiring Bo and Karn, all that's available is Rod1, purchasable from Auria.

I can only assume kramathorn was mistaken in his post (unless he knew of a bug or exploit). Is it possible to get to Tunlan early with just Gobi?

You need the Sphere to turn into a fish to get out of the undersea sandbox. That's the exact point DragonSD (and Slab) becomes available since the Sphere opens up Tunlan. Since janus confirmed knowledge of early access to DragonSD I assume there is some sort of exploit that has not been documented.

There's a speedrunner on twitch.tv named Jiseed who's using an apparent recently discovered debug function in Breath of Fire, leading to a branch name he calls "DeeJ%" Jiseed's DeeJ% speedrun: http://www.twitch.tv/jiseed/c/3966113 (I have no idea how to embed a twitch channel) (From his channel FAQ) Q: What is "DeeJ%"? How do you perform the name select 'glitch'? A: DeeJ% is using a suspected debug function found in the name select in order to skip past much of the game and only battle the final 5 bosses. As for how to do it - this courtesy of Myria from the Dragon Tear forums: 1) Go to New Game to get to the name entry screen. Be very careful with the next few steps - don't press anything I don't say, or the cheat will lock out. 2) On controller 2, press and hold A, Y, L, and R. Doing this with one hand really sucks. 3) On controller 1, while those buttons on controller 2 are being held, press the following very carefully in order: up 4 times, right 2 times, down 8 times, left 1 time. 4) If you did it correctly, the background will turn red. At this point, you can let go of controller 2. If the screen didn't turn red, you are locked out of the cheat. To reset the lockout, cancel the name entry screen and try again to reset the lockout. 5) Enter one of these as the name of your character and hit End. You can't make mistakes, or it'll lock you out; the screen will change back to normal if this happens. The names are case-sensitive. RYU CHUN VEGA KEN DeeJ Fei The screen color will turn back to normal as the config window comes up. Set your config how you like and start the game on the new file. **** Due to being a code, this likely wouldn't be an accepted run. Anyhow, it's pretty cool how this game can now be beaten in under an hour.

effort on the first draft means less effort on any draft thereafter - some loser

Ah, that's right! The GT code! In that case, maybe Janus will come back around sometime and consider giving this one another go. In all likelihood, this could be a half-hour run. edit: Got a bit excited. Maybe more like a 45 min run :p

For what it's worth I took a look at this game's RNG the other day. Relevant addresses are $D0-$D4: $D1, $D2, $D3, $D4 increment every frame by 1, 3, 5, 7, respectively. $D0 is a pointer to which of those for bytes the next RN will come from. When RN is used pointer increases by one (or drops back down to zero), and extra RN burned from relevant counter. RNG does not start until after new game is selected. It is also apparent that the (U) version of the game may actually have less text (and thus be faster) than the JP version, as the latter is written solely in hiragana and has additional dialogue that was removed from the English version. I have not thoroughly tested this, however. EDIT: Also forgot to mention this, but steps since last encounter is at $1090. Whether or not you get into an encounter on a given step appears to be some weird function of $1090 and RNG. In particular, it takes RN value, bit shifts it some, uses that as index for some array in the system bus, and then yeah...

Cutting Room Floor user AgileTek has found a glitch in the original Japanese release that allows skipping Camlon
A glitch in the original Japanese release allows visting most of the locations in Nanai, though the item shop remains inaccessible. In the first release, if the player skipped Camlon one of the Nanai guards that is supposed to be impassable is incorrectly set to wander instead of stand still, allowing the player to visit a Nanai mostly free of guards.
I did a quick run (using the infinite money and one shot kill cheats to make it go quicker, but I really doubt that causes the glitch) and successfully reached Windia without issues. As the user notes this saves some time on a speed run. The current run spends just under 6 minutes in Camlon. Losing the levels and equipment gained will slow the rest of the run down a bit, but I really doubt it won't be a net gain.

Good find, although I wonder if the Japanese version will still be slower due to text differences...

I'm willing to give it a try. On which emulator was it done? Or it doesn't matter?

I can confirm that it works; DeeJ puts me right before Scande at level 29... with no dragon spell and everyone's initial equipment. Back to the drawing board...
