I almost always used that trick when I played SMB3 on console.

I got a reply to my second email from Nintendo. I still didn't get my question answered, but at least I didn't get one of those annoying automated responses that they give to a lot of people who all have different questions. Basically he said that it's impossible for them to contact the creators of SMB3, and that we can't know the answer for sure. I still think going through the wall in Bowser's Castle should be allowed. Nintendo obviously knew that bricks can push you to the right. Even if they didn't know you could use that to pass through the wall, it's not a glitch but a design flaw. It's sort of like skipping the well in OoT.

Are you thinking about submitting your times to TG, and would SDA accept the glitch?

TG won't keep track of world records for individual levels, so I would have to do a speed run of the whole game (either with warps or whole game). Someone on the TG forums said he got 12:32, so that's the time I'll have to beat (unless someone else does even better), and I don't think it will be very hard once school ends and I have lots of time to practice. If you take all my records for individual levels, combine them all into one speed run, assume none of the hands catch me, throw in a lot of mistakes (though nothing too big), and assume I don't lose my fire power before I get to Bowser, I think that would give me a sub-12 time pretty easily.

I just tried a speed run of world 1, and I got 2:07 from power on to touching the chest in the fortress, which is about 23 seconds slower than perfection. I only tried twice, and this run was very sloppy, so I'll try some more and see how I can do. Edit: I tried a few more times and got 1:59. Edit 2: I just got 1:56. Edit 3: 1:55

You're getting closer :). Are you practising on famtasia or Nes console?

I'm practising on Famtasia, but I'm not using any save states and I'm playing at 100% speed. Edit: I just improved my time to 1:54.

I just did an 11:37 SMB3 speed run with 19 re-records. Edit: And I was playing at 100% speed. Edit 2: I just tried to do a good run with fewer re-records, but it took over 20 tries to get past the hands :(

Not as awesome as my new time of 11:41 with only 10 re-records! I got lucky with the hands this time, it only took a few tries. I think the level I've been having the most trouble with is the second level in world 8. It's hard to consistently get the fire flower from the block, so that took me a few re-records to do correctly. I also sometimes mess up when going up the hill with the plants in 8-2, but I'm getting better at that. Edit: I just got 11:36 with 35 re-records, but it took tons of tries to get past the hands. Also, for some reason Famtasia decided not to display a frame when I would usually jump and I ended up jumping either too soon or too late, so I kept messing up and using a lot of re-records. I'll try some more times and see if I get luckier. Edit 2: 11:35 with 16 re-records. Edit 3: 11:33 with 9 re-records.

Nice! What is the next step? Under 11:30? Or even under 11:00?? (sometime in near future)

I don't think any clean runs will ever break 11:00, but I'm definitely cheering for Michael as he gets ever closer to that mark ^_^
someone is out there who will like you. take off your mask so they can find you faster. I support the new Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun.

I don't think I'll ever come close to 11 minutes without save states. In just the first world alone I lose almost 10 seconds.

It's most certainly possible. Theoretically, anything you do with the speed turned down while using re-records should be doable at normal speed without re-records. It's just much, much harder to get right on the first try. Just as a side comment, all of this talk about NES games inspired me to dig mine out a few days ago, I popped in SMB3 for the first time in several years and gave it a go. I didn't set any speed records by any stretch of the imagination, but I managed to get through the game and only lost one life, in 8-2. I kept screwing up the jump at the end for some reason. I've never been able to beat the Super Tank or Bowser's Castle on one try before. :)

The super tank doesn't give me any problems, though sometimes I die in bowser's castle. I've beaten the game without dying before, but not yet in a speed run. Edit: Actually, I just remembered that I did a speed run a long time ago on a real NES without dying that was around 14 minutes, but it's harder not to mess up when blasting through all the levels so fast.

I'm still trying to do a good no-save speed run, and today I got 11:29, but there's only one problem, I accidentally loaded. After all the save state assisted speed runs I've made, I have a habit of saving often, even though I was doing a no-save run. One of those times, when I was very close to the end of the game, I accidentally loaded instead of saving. When I finished the game, I opened the fmv, and I noticed that it had 3 re-records, which means that I must have also accidentally loaded some other time during the game, but I have no idea where. Even though this may not be considered a no-save run, at least I know I'm capable of a time around 11:30 without using save states.

So get it on tape and take the record already :) You can probably do it with anything under 11:30. Btw, what's the status of the wall glitch dilemma?

You can probably do it with anything under 11:30. Actually no one submitted any times to TG yet for SMB3 so I could get a time of 5 hours and still get the record :) However, the fastest time anyone at the TG forums claimed so far is 12:32. Btw, what's the status of the wall glitch dilemma? TG banned the shortcut in bowser's castle that involves going through a wall, and I did use the shortcut, but even if I didn't it would still probably be under 11:40 since the shortcut doesn't save that much time.

Michael, are you still planning on submitting your SMB3 run to TG? I'm going to submit recordings for MM2, MM3, SMB2, SMB3. But if you're going to submit SMB3, then I probably won't do that one.

Sad but true.. not one submission that I've been made aware of coming my way :( Funny you should mention about the 5 hours thing Micheael.. I was actually going to be sending off a tape in the near future, and knowing my crappy skills on World 8 ^^;; that sounds about how long the tape would be :) Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

Why bother... why not use DVI? Anyways, I think that's more trouble than it's worth. Th ability to trust submissions... is part of the system. Then again, that's part of any system you're in. You jump through hoops... only they don't seem like it when you're in the speific context.

Michael, are you still planning on submitting your SMB3 run to TG? I still need to find out if I'm allowed to record it with a digital camera. Since I'm too lazy to mail a tape, if VHS tapes are the only option then I won't be submitting any speed runs to TG.

Mailing tapes. Sheesh. That does sound like too much work. And for all anyone knows, you might have just hooked up your computer into your TV from behind to play an emulator movie on it, and the NES is there just for show. Hey, it could happen! You could even practice finger-synching to the time-attack so you could record yourself with the controller in your hands and make it look like you did it all for real. Just keep that computer out of sight, behind the wall somewhere! D'oh! (Yeah, I'm being really facetious here. I just thought it would be funny to foil people looking for a "legit" speed run with all this tape-mailing nonsense or whatever.)
put yourself in my rocketpack if that poochie is one outrageous dude

I once planned making a 3D animation that shows a NES console, a TV screen and a robot who plays the NES. The TV screen would show frames from the actual timeattack video, and the robot's fingers would be synced to the data in the FMV file.
