Ah my bad I didn't realize you were looking for something more optimized. I'm sure a lot of pannenkoek's ABC videos aren't perfectly optimal time-wise, though. I don't think speed is of particular concern =P
I'm not sure if that's really tool assisted, I think it just used save states. I made one but it's pretty terrible, so I'll redo it. I think I've got an ok route though based on that.

Yeah, I think a good bit of time could be saved with a different slide down. Plus genally more speed sliding.

No, I'm not the person offering the $1000.00 before someone asks. (But if you get the money I wouldn't say no to splitting it 50/50!)
There is a couple of observable facts
1. The Bomb-Omb explodes directly underneath.
2. At the same time Mario collides with the wall at the lowest possible point before landing.

So many people talking about it having something to do with the bob-omb and I just can't see that at all. The timing for bob-ombs to explode doesn't match the time it takes for Dota to trigger the bomb and then land at that spot, it takes an extra couple of seconds for him to do that. If you look at the video carefully you can actually see the bomb explode just after he collected the 2nd red coin seen here: http://i.imgur.com/halSz3z.png
I don't think the Bob-omb is involved either. To me, this seems to be the result of some sort of glitch involving Mario's position. I just can't really tell as of right now.
Wow, what a weird glitch. As others have said it looks to me like Mario intersects a bunch of different polygons at once and gets warped upwards. No idea why it shoots him upwards instead of downwards though.
I'm also reminded of the cannonless star glitch. Maybe mario is trying to grab the ledge of the platform and since there's no room there (the ledge is up against a wall) the game snaps him to the nearest grabbable ledge in vertical range (in this case the intersection of those two ceilings). Just some ideas.
Wow this is really neat! I always like seeing mysteries like this one randomly appear. I think SM64 is a bit beyond me, but my two cents is that dota-teabag had the next inputs to get the next red coin (side flip or backflip or whatever) in his controller at the time this glitch happened (obviously not expecting to get warped up.) I would guess this is involved somehow. I mention this only because I didn't notice it in panekoek's blooper reel at the end of the video.
Anyway happy hunting!

That can happen (see 50 Star Room Stairs ABC strat), but there's a height limit of 239 units on the glitch, which isn't all that high.
Anyone has .state file (Bizhawk save state) with all keys collected? x(
I think I have one, but not for the Japanese version (I don't know if they are transferable).
Edit: Do you think a Mupen inaccuracy effecting the glitch?
And Mario wasn't even jumping at the time, he was landing.
I did a bit of testing and my guess is that Mario might actually have been jumping at the time (the same frame he lands.) I managed to land in roughly the right spot with speed such that I can jump and hit the wall 1 frame later. I would theorize that this happens at the same time that the height of the ceiling is changing, and the game is getting confused about what Mario is colliding with. Mario also reflects off the wall at a different angle, this might also have some impact. I don't know the tools enough to do serious testing though.
I noticed the original video came out in 2013, and pannenkoek2012 says it was shown to him a 'short while' ago. I'm guessing since he put $1000 on it he put considerable effort into reproducing it. Is there any documentation about what ideas were being tested at the time?

When I asked Kyman about it early July, he said he'd shown it to the ABC guys last year and didn't get a response: https://gyazo.com/2e453274c902b374839c09f4b639dab6
He asked again though and this time it did, obviously. So this "short while" will have been in the past month, however, there have been other things discovered like PUs so I guess that may have delayed working on it at all.

Maybe it has something to do with the foot being in the wall after the kick and jumping after? It reminds me of something similar to the swimming glitch where Mario rises up when his head collides with the wall thing just much faster. I'm not a Super Mario 64 player or TASer, but I thought I should at least give my opinion. Good Luck Everyone!!!
