Comments

This is a TAS of a Fairly OddParents game... self explanatory. This is also the first sub (i assume) that uses endrift's new mGBA core on BizHawk... syncs just fine. The TAS is technically sub 37, but i can't seem to skip the BIOS intro...
This TAS uses a Gyro, which saved a bunch of time, and also screws up the Bronze Knee Cap.

Stage by stage comments

Episode 1

All tricks were discovered here. I buy in the 1st stage a the Gyro, which I use in that stage and use it later in the run.

Episode 2

This is where you first collect key items. On the Boss I can't use the powerup item because of the now accurate loading times.

Episode 3

SCREW THE MAJOR

Episode 4

There's a shooter stage, which I cannot really entertain because I need to hit alot of stuff. also, SCREW THE BRONZE KNEE CAP.

Episode 5

The boss strats on this one are reversed, and SCREW THE BRONZE KNEE CAP AGAIN.

Special Thanks:

...to CoolKirby, for being the only guy that got interested and to post motivating feedback in the thread. I also want to thank and apologize to Jules. Thank you for discovering and further this game. I'm so sorry for being so aggressive and mad towards you. I didn't mean to hurt you in any way and I sincerely hope you're doing well. I hope you can forgive me to what I said to you.

I will let you choose this one.

LOLtext

tnx 4 watching... I hope you like it... it wasn't all that easy as it seems since I'm still a total Rookie. Next will be between Coca Cola Kid and Pocket Monster 2, I have VBoy to do left but stuff that not right now...
BTW, if some expert TASer can work on Breakin' Da Rules instead of me that would be awesome... That game begs to be TASed and be Starred.
thnx 4 watching... again.

ars4326: Claimed for judging!
ars4326: Hello, Kurabu. First off, I liked the game choice (I used to get a kick out of watching the Nick show!) and could tell that you put some considerable effort into this. With that said, after watching this movie multiple times and considering the feedback given in the thread, I've gotta be honest in declaring that this run needs another pass through to be up to site standards for publication.
Aside from RobynS's test WIP which showed there's still optimizations that need to be found for x-speed (uncovering relevant addresses via RAM Watch is a must), I also came across a significant number of improvements involving further use of the gyro item. I've listed these finds in this thread. Other posters brought up additional technical quality issues as well, in which I hope you objectively consider and look to improve upon.
So all in all, I hope you take this constructively and work toward making a v2 improvement that's more polished. I'd love to soon see a better optimized run of this game from you (and I know you're, indeed, capable of it).
Rejecting due to sub-optimality.

I'm watching it now, and the tech quality of this TAS is rather questionable, to be honest. Why do you keep jumping when it's much slower than running (4-3-3-4 ppf vs. 2-3-3-2)? You're pretty much bunny hopping for the entire movie, which means you're almost constantly losing time. : \

If only this was brought up earlier, in some sort of thread where WIPs were being posted! If people care enough to bring up things like this in submission threads, why can't anyone ever actually do it in the game threads?

1. This game didn't interest me enough, so I never bothered checking the WIPs 2. This submission text doesn't explain anything at all, so even if it was somehow proven to be optimal, chances are, no one will know.

That's nice, but I'd like a real answer from the person that post actually applies to.

I don't have access to a computer very frequently, and I did post in the thread, but I had no chance to actually play the game until now. I just decided to test this game myself because it looked off. You'll see after landing some jumps in this game make the character run slower before starting at full speed again? It wasn't meant with any hurtful intention, and I'd really hate for it to be seen that way. : \ I'm sorry if this post is just nonsense. I just don't want to have a bad reputation/be denigrated in general this quickly. I've been trying to make a TAS for ages (staying on task/having motivation is hard enough) and joined to try to help others, not to be a general nuisance that no-one wants around :| I'd feel bad if I made others feel bad, and I don't want that to happen, especially by me being a bit short-sighted.

It was more of a general criticism I had, brought on by a moment of weakness from someone else's annoying behavior on the forum. Sorry about sounding so harsh. The way it looked to me from what I watched is that whenever he needed to jump, he would continue jumping in order to avoid said slowdown. I admit I've only watched the WIP encodes, but I saw no obvious difference in movement speeds between running and jumping. As nitrogenesis said, a BK2 of this would be appreciated. Perhaps you two could even collaborate on an optimized run or something.

No, no, you did nothing wrong. We've had a small but heated debate with Samsara over this exchange on IRC; for the record, I think it's perfectly acceptable to mention potential improvements in submission threads. You weren't an ass about it, so it's okay in my book. I do see how some people might be discouraged by such potentially important information delivered so late, but it's not like you've purposefully withheld it to spite the author. (However, it would be a lot more helpful to post short .bk2 demos next time, just so that no-one doubts your assessment.)

i suck so much OK, let me rewrite some things in this sub, I'm just really tired and my back hurts because of this TAS. First, let me say something first. Bunny hopping in this game was necessary because of how some ground and the enemy AI behaves. It's not so pleasant to stop, keep running, and then encounter an enemy which will screw up the momentum.

Ok, working on it now. I'll try to get one up before tonight. Don't expect much in the way of frame perfection, but it should be faster.

I genuinely want to know why, you post this at the BEST possible instance where I claim victory on finishing a TAS at last and then get raped by someone who didn't even tried to work hard on it to then get said person's moral value to decrease. Even then, I'm not all that sure if that is really the best way to go through the later stages... and there's not even an encode, but next time... PLEASE take consideration of that ok?

Let's not escalate the mutual feelings of misery. We already have three people in this discussion feeling bad for their own reasons. (Also, if you constantly remind people how much you suck, that's exactly what you'll be remembered by. Just saying.)

Kurabu, if you (and/or another collaborator) happen to make any improvements, just post a replacement file here in the thread. We'll update the movie file and go from there.

Okay! I redid everything in 1-1 after buying the gyro (the rest of it is this submission's input) and saved 30 frames from less jumping. NOTE: I didn't take the time to make this as fast as possible, I just wanted to rush it out. This should NOT be used as a measure of how big a frame-perfect improvement of this TAS would be. http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/24716694224062329 As for whether the known improvements should be ignored but noted and this TAS be published anyway: I don't know. I think the quality of this TAS isn't that bad. There are probably some frame savers that don't involve minimizing jumps, but overall I'd say it looks decently polished outside of the known improvements. The problem is is that this TAS is almost 40 minutes long, and loses frames at nearly every oppurtunity. It would definitely add up to something... likely big. I'm not going to vote.

It’s something you should’ve figured out yourself when TASing. The very first thing to do in any 2D platformer is finding X and Y coordinates, and from watching them you can determine what the fastest method of movement is. I really keep having the feeling that this website could have so much more in terms of TASing tutorials. If I think about all the things I’ve learnt in 5 years of TASing, and then look at this site and see nothing of it… it’s really sad.

To be fair, that's a problem you can work toward solving by writing the information out yourself and convincing an editor (or becoming an editor) to make pages for you.
I am still the wizard that did it. "On my business card, I am a corporate president. In my mind, I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer." -- Satoru Iwata <scrimpy> at least I now know where every map, energy and save room in this game is

See, I never said I was gonna work towards improving the site. I just find it really sad that it could be that much better, but isn’t. Edit: @Invariel below: I really want to reply but I don’t want the thread derailed further.

And I never suggested that you said you would. Simply that, if you are saddened that the site could be better, your five years of experience, written down so that others could make use of it would help things. Your lack of desire to help, however, is something that cannot be helped.

I haven't watched the full run yet, but from the WIPs, the movement didn't look unoptimized. Without knowing about running being faster, I probably wouldn't have guessed just from watching. I'd say this is optimized enough to be published for a general audience to enjoy for now, and maybe improved later. Also, thanks for thanking me! Glad I could help.

By all appearances from the other thread, it was done in only two weeks (and submitted about 40 minutes after asking for 'feedback before submission'), so it really doesn't seem like it'd be that much of an ordeal to redo it with the known fixed movement pattern. I'd suggest another pass regardless, to be more careful in general, and not to take everything so personally. I'd think you'd be used to it by now since your submission history is full of things that needed and/or had fairly basic further optimization to be done.
