The only rule is "dont use a flute", which means you can grab the flute in fortress 1 as long as you dont use it. Anything else goes, you dont need to do all levels, just the ones you think are necessary, its allowed to use the cloud to skip level, etc. My time under these rules was 1:30:17 EDIT: just forgot to mention that while i made this, a weird thing hapenned: i was in world 7, so i beat first level and the "N" memory game bonus appeared at the "start" square. I went for it to get some items, got some but didnt clear the puzzle, and when i exited, it reappeared and pulled me back in. That kept hapenning and i was afraid to get stuck so i tried to move just before i was grabbed again, and i could escape. The bonus stood there. Is this a known glitch? here are the details: before entering level 1 i had: 10 x lives 10 x coins 0814760 points a flower bonus lotsa items after exiting level 1 i had: 10 x lives 18 x coins 0828160 points a flower and a mushroom bonuses lotas items The N of spades bonus appeared so that i could enter it 5 times in a row... It didnt matter if i win or if i lose, it just appeared 5 times. I tested beating all 5 of them and it was possible.

I've never heard of that happening. Was this done on an emulator? If so, do you have an emulator movie file of it?

Yeah, Foda said it was on an emulator in IRC, and he has a movie file and a save state. Maybe he will post them soon.

Lots of close calls in here. (Far from perfect, but exciting and way better than I could do.) Has there ever been a time attack of this game under these same rules? I think I've seen a 1:17 one but that had some other weird restrictions.

Yes there is. It's far more restrictive. http://tasvideos.org/movies.cgi?playerid=5 Edit: You mean a TAS with only the no-warp restriction? Chances are with the above TAS, any TAS with less restriction would not be accepted. TAS aside, I recall that Radix only wants a 100% level speedrun if it must be warpless.

I've been thinking that it might be interesting to see a high score run, with the restriction that you can't use death to repeat levels.

But warp whistles would be fine?

Actually I would much rather see a "fluteless" time attack of SMB3 without those extra restrictions, which I think are pretty silly. I especially didn't like the starting and ending each level as small mario. It wastes time, and it's not as if you would just fly over all the levels without that restriction, because flying is slower than running in this game. I don't see why a less restricted run wouldn't be accepted, especially if it's faster and more entertaining.

Oh, but that was "tool-assisted"...

Yeah, 1:17:41 was tool-assisted. It's probably very improvable since it was made over 4 years ago on Famtasia. Oh, and I just realized there's a 55 minute one there that doesn't play all levels, not really submitted/published though. (edit: also found that link was broken, and hopefully just fixed it) 1:19:50 warpless and non-tool-assisted sounds very good.

I lost 1 life at the first castle (ship) Lost 1 at level 2-3 Lost 1 at 6-9 Lost 1 at 6-10 SUICIDED at world 7 first small forstress because i couldnt figure where to find a freaking leaf!!!! lost huge time here, then skipped the level with a cloud. Lost 1 at 7-8 (went there once, then went sucesfully for the 7-7 route which i should have used in the first place) Lost 1 at world 7 second fortress, then used a cloud to skip it. I entered the gold ship in world 6. The good side to this is that i got a cloud on it. I tried to use the cloud on the tank! but didnt work lol.... could have skipped one extra level, what a waste... I was attacked by the 3rd hand at world 8. I killed bowser the way hes supposed to be killed: fast! >D So, overall this was well played, but the route is still really full of mistakes. If a route was to be really planned this could be 5 minutes faster still, playing at same skill level i played. here it is http://www.angelfire.com/ex/uobt/smario3-foda-fluteless-v2.zip

I'm with Radix on this one, I think that a non-flute version of this game should play all the levels as well. This means no clouds or juke boxes, and you should kill all the hammer bros., even the fire bros. in world 2. Also make sure you play all the levels in world 6, even the optional ones. But that's just me.

For your information, there is a tanooki suit stashed somewhere. I'll leave it to you to figure out. :) It's the only way to beat this level (assuming you didn't come in with flying power).

The gold ship magically spawned from a hammer bros. due to a special score and coin count after beating a stage. Please try not to turn one of the map hammer bros. into a gold ship, and if it does, and you can't avoid it, reset the game and try again. The gold ship is a time-waster on speedruns. You can't even skip it with a music box. The final prize is exactly the same as what you would get from the hammer bros.

The clouds do not work on automatic encounters and final stages. Better luck next time!

haha thanks, but those mistakes were decisions i made while i was making the run, again i didnt really plan anything. and no way i'd reset it on world 6! everything was going perfectly! but i didnt know anything about the gold ship, so you taught me things i didnt know (like it being the hammer bros transformed, and it giving the same prize). about the clouds... yea, now i know that :S but doesnt matter anyway because next time i play it i'll please the audience by finishing all levels.
