Hi. This is an improvement of 208 frames over my cancelled submisson.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: BizHawk 1.11.6
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Uses a game restart secuence

Comments

Most of the improvements come from better optimization. I also found that pressing left+right on ladders gives a great speed to the left and you are at max speed directly after letting go of the ladder.

Stage by stage comments

1-1 (1)

I used a different strat to do the ladder glitch at the beggining of the level saving 41 frames. It is possible to clip in the ground with the help of a veggie. I lost back that time to the Birdo frame rule, but I saved 1 frame at the Birdo fight.

1-2 (13)

I saved 1 frame in the first part by jumping on one enemy instead of two. I also saved 11 frames at the Birdo fight.

1-3 (13)

There is no change in this level

3-1 (19)

I had an extra lag frame when restarting the game. I saved 4 frames in the second room by jumping instead of falling. I saved 3 frames in the following room with better subpixel and better potion throwing.

5-1 (26)

Better optimization allowed me to save 7 frames.

5-2 (113)

I saved 6 frames from better optimization up to the Birdo fight where I saved 81 frames.

5-3 (147)

I saved 34 frames from better optimization.

7-1 (202)

I barely made the rocket frame rule which saved a frame. I saved another frame in the following room. Then, using the left+ right trick in the climbing room, I saved 27 frames. Finally, I saved 26 frames at the Birdo fight.

7-2 (208)

Even though I saved 54 frames up to Wart, I am still over a second off the veggie cycle. I still saved 6 frames at Wart. I paused at the last hit to prevent him from moving. The global timer doesn't pause when the game is paused.

Other comments

  • Big thanks to Tompa for pointing me out improvements on my last submisson and for giving me feedback during the making of this TAS.
  • Thanks to masterjun for showing me the strat in 1-1. It adds a lot to the entertainement.

Samsara: Judging.
Samsara: File replaced with an 8 frame improvement at the very end.
Samsara: As I said in the thread, I'm glad you stuck with the movie and pushed down the time further and further with each new submission. Excellent work!
After reviewing the NES and GBA runs, I've determined that this is sufficiently different to stand on its own as another separate publication, so with the much heavier amount of optimization this time around I'm accepting it to Moons.

Okay, I have a question. Let's say, I've copied 100 frames worth of ALAKTORN's input and used it in my movie. He says it's his private input, so he wouldn't like it to be copied, but rather, recreated. Okay. Now what do we do to recreate it? Add 1 pressing of A on frame 50? It would still contain 99 frames of ALAKTORN's input. Add 50 random presses of random buttons at random places? We'll end up with still having 50 frames of ALAKTORN's private input. If we keep eliminating his private input further, we end up getting a desync, or suboptimal input. Even though, it still would contain some frames with ALAKTORN's input. See, once you have copied something, you can't honestly recreate it anymore, since you already know what it was. And you can't eliminate the original input's trace, since it will break the speed record.
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

For what it's worth, in 2399M, got4n also employed a strategy[1] that I showed him[2] to pull off a certain trick. Like in this case, I have also had reason to be annoyed because the strategy I showed him was not even close to optimized, yet he chose to copy it verbatim. I don't know if it's precisely the same to the frame, but it certainly looks like the same input to what I showed him before. I chose not to say anything about it at the time because I didn't want any credit for the run. I was not actively involved in the creation of the run, and even if got4n recreated some input from mine, I couldn't care less. The TAS had several thousand views on youtube. Did got4n just lie to several thousand people because he presented input that in some small capacity resembled that of someone else as his own?[3] Did tasvideos.org unwittingly lie to several thousand people on the same grounds? Despite not being able to know any better? Did I lie to several thousand people by choosing to not disclose this fact? None of these. If someone doesn't want credit, they're not being credited. That's just how it is, and that is very much how it works outside of the world of TASes as well. After all, you can't force an artist to sign their own painting. [3]: Never mind the fact that credit in a TAS is so much more than just input. Strategies, routing and research are very important as well, but somehow they're not part of the discussion. Why don't all of the people who do that kind of stuff get co-authorship as well?

All of those, actually. Like, are you serious when you say that? Your reasoning is kinda on the same level as “it’s not a lie if you believe it”. XD Like seriously, the fact that you don’t care about people lying on something pertaining to you doesn’t make it not a lie. ????? What kinda logic is that? You can have your opinion on the crediting thing, whatever, but saying “none of these” is objectively wrong, that’s not an opinion and I don’t understand how both you and arandomgameTASer don’t understand the concept of lying. Edit: @Samsara below: That’s not even worth replying with a post to. Instead of debating why my argument is poor, you attach yourself to something of no value. Whatever though, I didn’t even want to post in this topic anymore. Edit: You deleted the post now but like I said I don’t care. I’m not posting here anymore.

I mean, you've ignored most of the posts in this thread because they explained precisely why your argument is poor. I don't see what was so wrong about attaching a nonsense post, especially since you've done nothing but post nonsense this entire thread. See, naturally you pay attention to the useless post because it's something you can springboard off of to make yourself look better. The reality of the situation is you have no arguments to make against anything else that I or other people have been saying. It's really, really simple psychology, dude.

Being credited is an honor more than anything. In theory, the site could operate on a license that assumes all credit for any movie that a user submits. And that'd be fine, since nobody has to submit their movies to this site anyway. As long as the site clearly states in its license that you surrender your credit to a movie, it'd be perfectly fine. Tasvideos doesn't work on such a license. Instead, co-authorship is used as a mechanism to honor people who have contributed a substantial amount of work to a run. It is their choice to accept this honor however, and if they do not wish to do so, that's perfectly fine. Especially, it is a agreement between users. Nobody can be credited against their wish. Giving credit isn't a matter of lying vs. being truthful. You may voluntarily surrender your credit to something that you worked on if you want to. You might do contract work for which you're not credited for money. By your stubborn view of what credit means, these things would be lying too, when they happen all over the place. This is how the world works, not tasvideos. If you have a problem with this, go complain to the world.

What a shame, I posted a constructive argument, and ALAKTORN decided not to post anymore without even addressing it :(

ALAKTORN, obviously you're not going to read this thread anymore, but here's a quote from #tasvideos dated May 24th: 20:59:03 <Samsara> halfway tempted to replace the file and add you as co-author without mentioning anything May 24 20:59:12 <Masterjun> ._. May 24 20:59:16 <Samsara> but i won't May 24 20:59:19 <Masterjun> thank you May 24 20:59:44 <Samsara> is it something you're going to bring up in the thread, though? May 24 21:00:38 <Masterjun> currently writing a thing May 24 21:00:52 <Masterjun> I mean it's not a big deal May 24 21:01:12 <Masterjun> I shouldn't actually write anything, but I still want to say something about it May 24 21:01:21 <Samsara> fair enough It's very clear Masterjun does not want co-authorship, as already indirectly stated in his post:

I mean I'm fine with it, but maybe you should consider asking for permission the next time you do it.
(emphasis mine) Finally, the author himself already credited Masterjun for the 1-1 strat in the submission comments. Is that seriously not enough for you?

Going by the little I know of IP law, ALAKTORN would still own that sequence of inputs even if you changed all 100 of them, simply because you started with his work as a base. On the other hand, if you started from scratch and ended up with an exact copy of his inputs just because it's the best either of you can do, he'd have no claim to it. This also answers Invariel's question about pressing start on frame 8: Everyone can hit it on frame 8 as long as they do their own work to determine that it's the soonest you can do so. It seems a little odd, but my understanding is that the important part is how you got there, not the actual result you got. And no, I don't know how you're supposed to prove that someone copied your inputs if they're claiming they did it on their own. That said, I'm not saying everyone needs to start from scratch instead of building on other people's work. People are perfectly able to either allow other people to copy their work freely or be added as co-authors, and you can (or so I assume) copy a cool trick without copy/pasting the exact input that was used to accomplish it. Take this with a grain of salt though - I am neither a lawyer or a TASer. I just like watching these videos.
