A 274 frame improvement over the existing run using an entirely new experience route.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: FCEUX 2.2.2
  • Beats the game as fast as possible

Comments

It's finally done! This was easily the hardest TAS I have worked on, and I am happy to finally have it on the workbench. Despite being only a small improvement in frame count over Phil's run, this TAS is completely different. I used a new experience route where I lost frames early on to gain enough experience for the powerful elbow attack to use earlier in level 4, saving enough frames overall to make it an improvement.
It took me many restarts and failed attempts before I settled upon this route. Dave_dfwm's wips were also scrapped since I couldn't get enough experience later on to make the early savings meaningful.
Overall I am very pleased with this run, despite being under 9 minutes long it challenged me every step of the way until everything came together at the very end. I think the strategy used here is optimal overall, although it can probably be done slightly better, if RNG and enemy behaviour is carefully reverse engineered and analyzed.
Special thanks to Dave_dfwm for time saving suggestions and previous WIPs.

Samsara: Judging.
Samsara: File replaced with a 105-frame improvement.
Samsara: Down to 14, now. Accepting as an improvement to the published run.
fsvgm777: Processing.

I'm 99.9% sure that Double Dragon wasn't made for the Famicom Disk System (FDS).

Clearly ~10 times of having this happen hasnt taught me anything. I think I will only stop causing this problem when there are no more old FCEU runs left for me to convert files from. 8D

Nice improvement :) The elbow is uber-useful, glad you found a strategy that allows getting it sooner. All the hard work was worth it !

The fcm importer was fixed in the latest fceux release, it was setting the fds flag that was never initialized on conversion.
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

Thanks for the shoutout regarding my WIP from many years ago!! See the YouTube encode. At 6:38, the blue-overall guy comes out, you kick him, and throw him off the cliff. However, you put in an extra knee to the head that seems unnecessary.... Since he falls off, can you skip the knee to the head? The knee to the head doesn't give any points that count toward earning the elbow punch. Also, in the final room, you elbow punch the 4th wave of guys (the two right before machine gun guy). After the elbow punch, is it faster to floor punch (once each?) to kill them than to let them get up and kicked down again?

Also I want to point out that the author says Phil :) Perhaps you could clean up the header info of your movie file? (.fm2 is just a text file you can easily modify this info yourself)

D: how did I let that extra knee slip by. Ok I fixed it and tested the floor punch which did indeed save time, thanks for the suggestion! Also thanks for your old WIPs they helped immensely. I also fixed the FDS and auhtor field. Please replace the movie file with this one: http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/33284544625522852 @PPLToast: Thank you for the temp encode!

Few questions if I may. You did a round house kick away from enemies a few times in the run. In stage 3 about 3:40 in the temp encode but it does not seem to do anything directly and you get hit in the process. was this just waiting for the enemy stun to reset and just killing time? The second time you did it to Machine Gun Willie at about 8:20 in the temp encode. This time though you dealt damage to him and knocked him down. Can you explain what happened please? That is all from my first watch. will watch it again and look for minor improvements.

At 3:40 if I did not do the roundhouse kick away I would have grabbed one of the enemies, I couldn't find any other way to avoid it in this case but since the stun timer is in effect anyway it doesn't really cost me anything. At 8:20 this is a glitch where he shoots himself for 16 damage. I honestly don't know the details of why it works. In Phil's original movie he uses an uppercut, so the kick itself has nothing to do with it.

in temp video, I see the elbow attack have powerful and short delay time, why you didn't use it at all time?

You need to gain experience to unlock the elbow attack.

^Thanks! This was definitely a challenge that had me stuck for a long time, it's a big relief to have it done. I also hope it can still be console verified like Phil's previous movie, since I just couldn't wait for 1.11.7 to get it on the workbench 8D

As always, much obliged fsvgm777. Quick question, is there supposed to be a pretty big black block down right?

Yes, there is supposed to be one. It's not an emulation bug.

I'm not able to download the MKV file via BitTorrent. I get an error on my client (Transmission) saying that the download is "corrupt." The download continues to run non-stop so this be something that needs to be looked at. The MP4 file download worked fine.

It works now. I can download without any issues. The only thing is that now the MP4 file is above the MKV. (Usually, the modern MKV file goes first.) Is this something that should be changed?
