This is a promotion for TASing discord, i completely understand that TASvideos has an irc channel, but this is just a little something extra, and it makes a bigger target for more people to run into, when it comes to TAS discussion. here is the code for the discord. https://discord.gg/X6Vae

This was brought up in another topic. Also, No. Join the IRC. Majority of the users that actually do use the TASVideos' forums sit there. And you're a first time poster/user which increases the No. It would also have to be created by a Administrator or a Senior member (or someone with a high rank) not you. A user who not only just joined, but is also someone who has been new to the scene since June/July this year.

I would really like a tas discord, this could be way better than the irc chat. We could create different channel and speak with audio if we want And on discord, we can put images or give directly our wip. And we can create a bot on Discord, this is not a problem. I don't understand why we still use a simple chat when tas need to send files, images and to talk with audio. We can still use IRC but Discord is better by a lot. And a big problem with IRC: We can't see the past messages. There is a Discord web app.

This is a Skype-like software where you can create servers with different channels and there is a chat and an audio server. You can upload some files like images of wip too

You should probably explain this point a lot better than how you presented it with. Stating it like this means nothing. As literally logging is something you can do in IRC and have it sorted by date. The way you should've explained it is like this: You can go where you want on whatever device has Discord and never miss a beat from the conversation. Compared to IRC where you can only keep one connection alive to get everything going, and if you open up on a different device, you'll lose track of that conversation. Yet again, the counter point to it is that IRC logging it is much, much better than what Discord provides as you're able to keep data from years ago. Whereas if you want to find that point in time with Discord, good bloody luck trying to find it.

Every speedrun community I'm in has migrated from irc to Discord aside from TASvideos at this point, and all of the TAS collaborations I've done recently have been over Discord. Easy drag-and-drop file sharing, different channels for different topics(without having to know their names and find them on freenode), voice channels for doing multiple-person audio commentary for runs, etc., are all nice features to have in one place.

That's because the IRC channel not a place to do active TASing with your team. It's the chat for the site. If everyone were to use IRC for their TASing talks, then it would overflow really fast. Feel free to use a private Discord server with your TASing team.

That's the big reason why I don't use Discord. Imagine over 100 people in a channel and you're away for like a week. There is no way you will read the backlog that contains silly talk 80% of the time anyways.

If you want to upload a WIP please use: http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/my#uploadfile You can share with just those you want to share, or you can make it public so everyone on the site can see it.

Now every almost every speedrun community have their own discord. I don't think migrating from irc to discord is a good idea but I think we should make a Discord server at least for voice conversacions.

Discord is wonderful.... if you don't like getting notifications or for some people (me included) if you don't like hearing anything unless you use the web app... (known issue they haven't fixed sense launch) In all honesty IRC is far better and if you don't like seeing joins and parts there are filters create one that filters JOINS PARTS and QUITS once you do that you won't see them anymore.

Hold on everyone. This discussion should not be about whether Discord or IRC is better. This discussion should be about why we, as a site, need a Discord server. Give reasons why the site should go through the trouble of setting up and managing a Discord server.

Speak with a mic and not by written message can be very usefull I think. Quick files drop can be important too. But I think there will nerver be a Discord Server: The community don't want one and for good TASers who doesn't need help, an irc client seems the best software. So, sorry to discuss about a stupid topic x)

As far as I can tell, the only effort required in setting up a Discord server would be reprogramming TVA as a Discord bot. Actually setting up the server wouldn't be any trouble at all, I don't think. Asking if the site "needs" a Discord server is a loaded question. The discussion has to be about which one is better, because the discussion is about possibly migrating from one to the other. It makes no sense to ask why the site needs a Discord server, because it doesn't. There's IRC, nothing else is strictly needed, but that shouldn't be used as an excuse to not explore any alternatives. I don't personally care much for Discord at the moment (though all the critical features I want are in active development), but I can still see a lot of good and not a lot of bad in setting up a server:
It'd probably be easier to manage than IRC, or at least moderation would be more straightforward than "wait until a situation escalates, give yourself Op, attempt to calm the situation, fail, don't do anything anyway". If people are abandoning IRC left and right in favor of Discord, then maybe an official site server would attract more people, specifically active people that can keep conversations going constantly as opposed to having 18 hours of silence, followed by a 3 hour discussion about Linux or Super Metroid, followed by 24 hours of silence. There wouldn't be any issues with netsplits, or page after page of nothing but joins/parts, cutting down on spam and other useless content. Mobile and web access would be a lot easier for people away from their home computers. Setting up team projects would be a lot more convenient, since everyone's going to use Discord anyway and tabbing back and forth between the team project on Discord and the main chat on IRC sounds like a major hassle.
Someone more familiar with Discord would have to explain any other benefits it has over IRC.

The major problem I see with a Discord server that isn't as present on IRC is that Discord ops are clearly marked, while the #tasvideos lives on a network that encourages ops to only op themselves when absolutely necessary. It removes the sense of baseline equality that makes the IRC channel a place I have decided to stay connected to for as long as I have. The other major problem with Discord is something people are touting as a plus: voice communication. With IRC, there is a living log that you can copy, paste, and save for later, and you can enjoy that log by remaining connected to the server even if you're away. If voice communication is where people do more/most of their talking, then people lose the ability to scroll up and see what was being discussed, and that record is lost. Discord does make 1-1 communication better, with its logged private messages, and it enables 1-1 voice calls too, but the simple fact that it exists and does these things does not make it the ideal move for our community.

To a layperson like me it looks like dedicated team chats should use Discord, while the general and random chat for the whole site is better as IRC. Sharing files, voice talks - all that stuff is handy when the team has a goal. General purpose occasional mumbling feels more comfortable on IRC.
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

One advantage I do see is the ability to set up some dedicated channel. For example it could have the off topic channel, a TASing help channel, a general TASing channel, emulator developpment or question, etcc. However I must say that I think iIRC is better for this since it's not as dynamic as the speedrunning community. I mean, TASing itself it's a slow process. :P One thing I dislike about discord is the fact that it's really not compact.

Sure, you can argue that we don't *need* Discord. But as Hetfield pointed out it's a pretty clear winner at this point. Rich messaging apps like Discord are just so much more pleasant to use. It could improve our community engagement quite a bit. IRC and Discord can be linked with a bot. We can keep the IRC channel for any old timers who can't or don't feel like accessing Discord. Many other communities have set this sort of system up, so there should be lots of info available.

The Hearthsim IRC/Discord do exactly this, and it works fine. It means that if you sit in IRC you can log everything the way you normally would too, which is great.

So, who's volunteering to set up the IRC <--> Discord bot? And, who's going to own the channels, and make sure that the mods are 1:1 from Discord to IRC? Who's going to update the existing IRC bot to crosspost to Discord when forum posts go up? Anyone? Bueller?
