Thank you very much, HL! I am goimg to try this out myself. Well, I didn't know that there is a seperate forum for SMB2J.

Those are decent TASes but won't be approved because people perfer the SNES version that shows World A-D. In my opinion, an FDS warpless run (till 9-4) can show several special endings (skipping castles) and some interesting routes (going through upside-down pipes).
I have an idea. Is there a save state, SRAM or simple cheat code that could be used to see all 13 worlds contiguously in one FDS warpless TAS? It would be an arbitrary category, but it would be entertaining enough for Moons. There's basis for such TASes being acceptable, see [2744] Genesis Sonic 3 & Knuckles "newgame+" by marzojr & Aglar in 27:31.29.

In fceux, if you save FDS game trough the game menu and then close the emulator - it creates new FDS rom in fceux folder -> sav. So you can beat that fds smb2 8 times (or have many it needs), then get new fds rom that contains 8 times beated game and then you can use this rom to create tas.

I had the same idea, and I've already found the responsable SRAM address to enter World A, but it's still too arbitrary goal for a warpless run. An FDS warpless run till World D is probably not a good idea because Mario has to game over at 9-1, return to the title screen, and use 8 stars from a save state or whatever to enter A-1. I have an idea and I'm working on it, but I'm leave you in suspense till I'm done. :)

I think as long as every level is completed contiguously besides the game over, it would be good enough (basically, it would be the least arbitrary way to achieve the goal of a warpless all levels category). But, I await to see what your idea is. :D

Do you think that getting the mushroom in world 1-3 is faster with the RTA route or with the " get the mushroom faster" strategy? I am not very sure, but it looks like the RTA strats is faster because you get running speed while with the second strategy, you have to jump over the gap, which results only in walking speed. I would like to try it myself, but I am not using my computer at the moment. RTA strats: you get the mushroom from the box, but you don't collect it. Then you run back a bit, wait fir the mushroom to drop down, and when it is about to fall, you start to run and you jump into the mushroom, collecting it with running speed in mid-air so that you land on the other side of the gap: http://www.twitch.tv/i_o_l/v/116301412?sr=a&t=156 (2:30) TAS strats: https://youtu.be/EDjGk5q-55M (1:40)

TAS strat looks faster because it reduces the waiting time, and getting the mushroom in 1-1 is faster than 1-3.

Yes, I also thougt of getting the mushroom in 1-1. But isn't there still the air time (only with walking speed) when you jump over the gap after getting the flower in 1-3?

You're right, but it's still shorter than waiting for the mushroom. As for getting the flower in 1-3, you won't be able to get running speed when jumping over the gap.

Well, I watched Mars608's TAS of it and he is getting the flower in 1-3, but like in the way you get the mushroom in SMB1 warpless, which is faster in this case because you don't have to jump over the only with walking speed. I still have a question that I couldn't figure out myself: at around 0:35 of Mars's TAS, he does this high frequency-ducking below the Goombas and Koopas without getting damaged. I tried it out myself and ended up gettimg damage. So I want to ask how to do this. The video is here: Link to video

No, it's slower if I remember correctly. Please don't care for that walking speed over the gap too much. If you get damaged on some frames, try to duck on those frames, and to run on frames where you won't get damaged.

On which levels, if I may ask (for RTA)? I thought it's only faster on 8-1 and C-1, but maybe I missed some.

I haven't tried every pipes systematically, so now I only know 8-1, C-1 and 5-2 (probably not for RTA). I believe there might be more (for TAS only), but it takes time to find a hidden route. Edit: OK, after looking through the map and some tests, I might be wrong. There could be nothing more that can be used in an FDS warpless run to save time.

So, you have been talking about that pipe glitch with the pipes coming upside-down. I am not very much used to the physics in this game because the slightly differ from the SMB physics. Could someone explain how this pipe-glitch works? I have seen it in the warped run in world 5-2 if I remember correctly, and there the pipe takes you to the area where the vine leads to. I don't understand how it works in 8-1 though.

Physics are the same as in SMB1. The pipe glitch works, because the bottom part of an inverted pipe is still a top part of a regular pipe, just with a wall above it. You can enter it like a normal pipe, if you get into the wall above it. There is no destination set however, so it takes you to whatever values have been set by previous pipes you encountered. 2 values matter. One decides which screen you get put on and another decides where horizontally you are put on that screen. The first gets reset to 0 frequently, but the other only when a (non-inverted) new warp pipe is loaded.

Thank you very much for explaining, Potato Stomper, this is very interesting. So, there is the problem of the worlds A-D in SMB2j, which can only be accessed by beating the game 8 times. I think somebody else might also had the idea, but I am suggesting anyways. If there is someone who is capable of rom-hacking (unlike me) that someone could change the value that determines if you may access the bonus worls or not. So if someone did this and posted the IPS-patch (which is hopefully allowed) we could use this hack instead of the normal ROM to make the warpless TAS. I think such a hack would also be allowed (that's only my opinion).

As a matter of fact, back when hacks needed prior approval, a hack to do exactly that was approved.

Modulo bounce heights on enemies and trampolines; the former is higher even for Mario, and the latter no longer changes based on X-speed (and also has a fixed gravity regardless of player).

My friend used to have this game on NES back in the days. Now I know it was a Pirated Famicom Cart with an external Famicom to NES converter (The one with a ribbon so the converter doesn't stay stuck in toaster NES). On it you could choose starting lvl if you held a button before pressing start on main screen. From what I can tell, it's "Super Mario Bros 2 (Lost Levels) (Unl)". And if you start the game Holding A, it takes you to A-1 World.

Running unofficial fds conversion doesn't feel legit. Also those mappers for unnoficial fds conversions usually poorly emulated.

So, if any of the Rom-hackers out there have a bit spare time, it would be really, really nice if one of these guys could do that little thing that I suggested. Thanks in advance if someone might do this.

The responsible RAM address is $D29F. Changing it from 0 to 8 before the title screen gives you 8 stars. I don't know how to make it an IPS patch, though.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/9vlxg3cwk64bfzd/Super%20Mario%20Brothers%202%20%28Japan%29%208%20Stars.zip?dl=0 1kb ips file that just changes the value you posted. Edit: If you ever need to do it yourself, it's easy 1. Convert ram cheat to Game Genie Code at http://www.d.umn.edu/~bold0070/projects/game_genie_codes/javascript_game_genie_encoders-decoders.html 2. Get Game Genie Guy and Ucon64. Extract both to same folder. 3. Paste Game Genie code in GGGuy.exe, choose rom file, click on create IPS and click on Patch. That's all
