Here is a Gameboy version of Arcade's Revenge. It shows off many glitches that do not appear on the other consoles. The main trick here is a type of level select glitch, that basically skips the whole game.
Wasn't sure what to put as a branch so i went with low%. Aside from that, there are 2 other available categories. A glitched and a glitchless run.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: Bizhawk 1.9.1
  • Reach the end as fast as mutantly possible
  • Skips 90% of the main game. Your welcome!
  • And so on

Comments

The glitch is pretty weird, if you ask me. It is basically a hidden level select option. Unsure how exactly to have it activated but this is the fastest i could manage to do it. Once it's active, it allows to perform 2 amazing tricks. First is what you see in this movie (lvl select) and second is basically "god mode". God mode let's you fly, hover, go through walls, floor and ceilings and most of this can be done with every characters.

After running this, it is pretty obvious that Ill attempt the glitched version. This game is a douche and deserves to be destroyed in every possible branch and on every console out there. I shall avenge every last kid who's childhood got gang banged by this disaster.
As for improvements, i am pretty sure that the glitch can be activated faster but how? After hours of trying, this is as fast as i could pull it off. I think it has to do with the screen camera but i could be totally wrong. Maybe it has something to do with character movement. I'm convinced it's a simple thing but, for now, it's a mystery. IF, by any chance, someone figures out how to activate it, a whole 10 seconds could be shaved. That's around 40% of the run.

Special shout out to:

Dark Fulgore who posted the video, demonstrating the wall clip glitch, on Genesis . This is what pushed me to give the Gameboy version a chance, since my Gen TAS is on hold, due to softlock issues.
Also my main man, Pj, who has the WR for running the snes version. This guy is a fraken gawd at this game. Pulls off almost every single tricks done in TAS but he does it... for real!!!
Aside from that, staff and viewers, i spank yous all.

Noxxa: Rejecting due to using a debug code, and being slow at it. A more in-depth explanation is here. This run really needed some more research on what it was actually trying to do - basic RAM searching would have helped out a lot here, for instance.

Well, that turned out short and confusing. I liked the SNES version of this that you and Brandon ran, but this GB version looks like a real POS. One concern though: the way you describe these glitches makes them sound like built-in debugging tools for the programmers, sort of like the debug menu in Earthbound or the GT code in Super Metroid. If that is the case, then they may be classified as cheats and be disqualified. (But that's not completely clear-cut either, as the two examples I mentioned demonstrate.)
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) . I agree on the fact that the run is not as satisfying to watch as the snes version. It is very short so obviously, it can leave you wanting more. The game is easily the worst between it and the other console versions. The best thing about it, imo, has to be the fact that it is so broken. That being said, i plan on doing an "all lvl" run so you should get more bang for your buck, next time around! As for the lvl skipping, how to know, for sure, if this is a debug tool? I stumbled upon it, while playing the game. I would've thought that a tool like this would've been harder to come accross. Dang, that would suck!

what's the difference between this and the glitched any%?isnt this faster? also that level skip seemed kinda debuggy,are you sure you`re not just using a cheat code?
TAS i'm interested: megaman series: mmbn1 all chips, mmx3 any% psx glitched fighting games with speed goals in general

The low% is fastest, yes. The glitched run does not skip any levels.

I agree mklip2001 when you say this run are very short and confused, I vote meh, for those reasons and says you make a good work, I wait a new run with all lvl for more entertainment.

Haha, thanks for the shoutout! <3 I vote yes on this one because this is exactly what this game deserves. I would actually be really curious to see what the rest of this game looks like, but I was definitely amused by this. Also...you mention the Genesis version has softlock issues. I've run into 6-7 different softlocks on the SNES version, but haven't played the Genesis version. Are they even more random and unavoidable? The wall clip glitch Dark Fulgore found looks super interesting and would probably be amazing in a TAS, so I'm sad to hear that it is having issues.

Hey Pj! Glad you liked! Not sure if you will get the same soflocks in the Gen version, like the one at the Apocalypse fight. I really have no clue. The softlock that i was talking about is at the end of spiderman stage 3. Link to video It actually locks you out of the level walls. The wall clip will pop you out at the opposite end of where you do the trick. So basically this puts you outside the last wall at the Carnage Rhino fight. I tried to reclip back in like i did at the first boss fight but without success, so far.

So, I have been doing some research on the "glitch" used here. What the run does is set RAM value 0x121C from 0 to 10. When that value is nonzero, if Start is pressed then instead of pausing the game the player will superjump upwards (even in the air), if A+Select are pressed the game ignores collision and locks in the player's vertical movement (allowing some slow hovering), and if B+Select are pressed, the game will switch to the next stage. 0x121C is set to 10 when 0x121D is set to 10. 0x121D increments by 1 under a specific set of circumstances, which I have not entirely investigated, but they include that gameplay is active (0x1164 = 1), that the player is on the ground (0x121F and 0x1222 are non-zero), some other requirements I'm not entirely sure of (this check is not run if the game is paused, for instance), B and Select are held and A is pressed (HRAM 0x0B bits 1 and 2 are set, and HRAM 0x0C bit 0 is set). So basically, be in game, hold B and Select, and press A 10 times while on the ground (jump 10 times). The nature of these requirements (holding some buttons down and pressing another a certain amount of times), and the effects that result from it, very strongly convince me that this is a debug code left in the game, and not a glitch. Aside from that, knowing reliably how to do the actions needed, this movie can be improved by 270 frames: User movie #38986309710552176 (goes up to the start of the last stage).

To elaborate on this: debug menus are disqualified (per this movie rule) if they are immediately accessible. EarthBound triggers the debug menu through a series of glitches, so it is allowed. The Super Metroid ACE run that used the GT code was a bit more of a special case, but it was given an exception because it did not reduce or trivialize the game difficulty in any way, which is normally the reason debug codes/cheats/passwords are banned. The GT code otherwise is not allowed.

So would a TAS with the cheat active to get the insane physic but showing off the whole game be refused? In any case, thanks for looking into this.

Yes, that's still making use of the debug mode, so it would be rejected.
