Thanks for understanding. Looking forward to it! ;)
Thanks, kaan55. I hope so, too.
And like I said earlier, please feel free to improve my [link removed] if you'd like! I just don't feel that it is good enough for submitting yet...
MOD EDIT: While the link did contain a movie file, it also has a link to a ROM, which is illegal to post here. Please refrain from posting ROM links. If you want to share a WIP or movie file, please use the userfiles instead.
Yaaay, I'm an active player now! :D (as of 11/9/2024) Thanks to TASVideos for the support, they're awesome.
I'm Asumeh, semi-expert SMB1 TASer. :)
Check out some of the TASes I don't submit/upload to TASVideos on my YouTube channel, if you'd like.
In progress:
- Extra Mario Bros. (redo) (with HappyLee and w7n) - I'm currently assisting with finding improvements before the boss. On hold; we're currently struggling to confirm that we have the fastest route. Some debugging may also help with finding glitch exits, but neither of us are experts in that field.
- Record my older TASes (excluding any obsolete TASes) and upload to YouTube.
Check out my other links here. (Mostly WIP hehe)
I would try to improve it but like I said in the S3K thread I'm unable to do any tasing for the next 3ish weeks.
That tas does indeed look improvable. For one you didn't even do basic Sonic 1 movement at the start of every level which is hold <> for one frame to instantly gain 128 speed and then jump (you accelerate twice as fast in the air).
So... here is the TAS Comparison of the two movies made by me and asumeh.

Also kaan55, these two movies are improvable in various things. So, if you want to improve these runs someday when you want, feel free!
This hack really don't have much potential to be submited at here.. but it's cool visualize side by side the differences and mistakes.
The hacks needs to offer a new content/gameplay to be fairly judged, here is a boss rush of the same style that's not be well received by the audiense in the past.
To be honest, I recommend you guys practice more optimization before present a serious submission here because the standards of Sonic TASing are very high currently. (Specially Twit)
Here is some tips: See frame-by-frame the any% runs to learn the basics. You can see the ring-attacks too, the levels are more explored and gives you another perspective than the any% runs
Enable Left+Righ input: Open gens - options - Input - Mark allow L+R/U+D -> This allow to press [L+R] and [up+down] at the same time.
Lear how to braking: In Sonic 3, you can start a spindash betwen 0-256 of acceleration, above an object you need to have 0 speed, if you have 127 of acceleration press [L+R] to have 128 and after that press [left+v] or [right+v] (depends of the direction you want the spindash) to have 0 speed instantly. In Sonic 2 you have to apply the last tip because you always need 0 acceleration to start a spindash in this games
S1 faster acceleration: Sonic has 24 sp/f of acc in the air, 12 sp/f walking. This is useful to get 1536 sp/f speed more faster, this tip works in all games. For example: at the beginning of a level do [L+R] = 128 sp/f -> [A] Long jump = +24 sp/f in the air.
Knuckles TAS tipsWall climbing: Starting on the wall use (A^)(<)(<)(<)(A)(A)()...repeat. This is nearly always the fastest way to climb single walls
Braking on objects: (B)(<)(<)(<>)(<v)(vA) (6 frames), is the fastest way to braking on objects if you don't have "128, 256, 384, 512, etc." speed.
Use Sonic TAS tools: This tool is esential to keep a good optimization level, just see this screen shot, see the difference?
Hud information is the following:
Lifes | X pixel possition : subpixel | Y pixel poss : subpixel
Continues | X Acceleration , Y Acceleration , Speed
Shield |[Next frame prediction]
Character Angle
About the hacks I don't think robotnik's plan B is a good choise for a submission (yes for practice/fun). Personally if you both want to work in a serious movie I have 3 hacks for my personal recommendation: Sonic 3 D.A Garden edition - Pantufa the Cat and Metal Sonic Rebooted. I was planning to start a run on one of this hacks, but you guys can chose one to work with it. Maybe the solidity display don't work in this hacks, but the sonic hud can be fixed adding the checksum of the hack. I hope this post will be helpful.
Great work on making the comparison encode, matheusbrancobs! :) I have a question, though: How come you didn't put how much time you saved and how much time I saved?
And thanks for the helpful information, Evil_3D. I have TASed Sonic the Hedgehog before, even though my TASes weren't too perfect at that time. I just didn't consider reading enough info at the time where I just starting out.
I tried to run the LUA script onto the hack, but it seems that the script doesn't support it yet.
It gives me this error message every time I try to run it:
https://pasteboard.co/Hw6SrRD.png
(First time uploading images, btw. Would this be okay? I'll delete it if you request me to.)
If you meant a different hack or any non-hacks instead, then I will attempt to run the script on those instead. The script has a good chance of not running on most hacks of Sonic the Hedgehog.
Also, sorry to hear that you'll be unable to do TASing for a few weeks, kaan55, due to you being out of the country. Hope to hear back from you soon.

Here's more information on general game mechanics if you guys are interested
http://tasvideos.org/GameResources/Genesis/SonicTheHedgehog.html
Here's one note regarding spin-dashing in Sonic 3. You actually need to have less than 268 speed to be able to crouch. I'm pretty sure it is written as 256 in the game's code but the game registers the input as you going neutral for a frame (-12 speed) and then checks for if you can crouch.
@Asumeh, why would you be sorry? I'm on vacation you doof :p
Also if you're interested I already presented a solution for getting the Sonic HUD to work for unsupported Sonic 1 hacks.
@WST, I really would love to watch but I can't for the same reason I can't tas. I don't have my own pc here.
You just need to change the rom checksum in the script.
Goto: Sonic Hud -> Sonic -> common -> open with Notepad++ "rom-check.lua"
http://oi68.tinypic.com/2ltrqqx.jpg
In this list you need to replace the checksum of the unsupported hack "0x299c" in one of the three in the image, if the hack is for S1 replace where is s1 ggfe, S2 = Sonic 2, s3 = S3&K
If you do it this well, Sonic HUD should work. And don't forget backup the checksums like in the image.
The solution worked! Thanks, Evil_3D. I got it to work on other hacks, too!
I'm also TASing a hack by Selbi called Sonic Erazor. I'll upload my progress if you want me to. I'll also upload the patch for the hack.
In case anyone needs to run the script on the hack, the checksum for it is "0x0000".

As I remember, things are even more complicated inside, marzojr told me once, but I already forgot the exact mechanism.
Anyway, this leaves some space for an extra micro-optimization: you can use [<>] instead of [<] for braking, as many times, as it doesn’t make your braking a frame longer. You’ll gain some extra subpixels for free. It’s also useful for positioning :)

Oh yeah I already knew about that for quite a while now. Using <> to brake subtracts 116 (128-12) speed. I usually try to get as close to 267 (or 128 for S3 objects and S2) as I can when I'm gonna charge a spindash. Gets me a few pixels ahead which is nice.
I've learned a lot in the time I was tasing. Like pressing <^ while at 128 speed to look up a frame sooner, or microzipping by pushing against a wall and then jumping which is an essential movement tech for Sonic 1 tasing (I've also used it once in the S3K run in LBZ2). It's little details like this that make all the difference.

Generally the menus in Sonic games are also optimizable in this way. For example instead of [^][][^][S] one can press [^]¹[^S]²
This also applies sound tests and so on… Can save quite a lot sometimes )

Interesting. I did not know you could apply that in other parts of the game.
In Sonic classic heroes I've learned that you can register the start input (and possibly others) every frame using multiple players.
@Evil_3D, Thank you for showing us how to change the checksum for specific hacks. It will definitely be useful in the future. What program did you use to open the romcheck file?

Yesterday I wanted to TAS Dr. Robotnik’s Plan B myself, but I couldn’t find a ROM for an hour. It’s a pity to realize it, but it’s the third time when I give up just because I cannot find the ROM.
(upd) okay, after digging in an online Sega emulator with Firefox’s element inspector and http request sniffer I finally got the rom in my hands.

Hey WST and Twit, I discovered a glitch in the second boss of this game, that you can defeat him with only 1 HIT! This saves a lot of time. And... I tried a zip in zone 2 that failed and some zips in first level (failed too, but can be optimized more).
As camhack don't works in this game on gens-s1 and I don't know how to fix it, I can't try to optimize these zips because the character is off-screen. Also, here is the video:
(upd) the last zip in this video, if optimized before, I think that will leave that "20 second improvement" of WST obsolete. Have fun!

It’s certainly a nice find! Good job :)
Sad side is that this hack does not look worthy for making a TAS. I made a short just-for-fun run of it though.
