This TAS draws heavily on the route planned by 0xwas and pirohiko, but in this movie I modified certain processes. chatterbox's submission is the basis of this movie.
  • Emulator used: BizHawk 2.4
  • Manipulates luck
  • Genre: RPG
Most of the glitches were explained in this submission from chatterbox and here.

Overwriting sprites

pirohiko found a glitch that can overwrite sprites, which is critical. In this submission from chatterbox, he explained in detail of overwriting sprites. But as he said: "However, in this English version, the sprite present in slot #00 flickering repeatedly to prevent the sprite from being pushed to arbitrary slot." By learning 0xwas and pirohiko's WIP, I managed to implement this glitch in the following ways:
  • Find a way to insert the barricade's sprite into slot#3
  • Generate 10 enemies (the on-screen sprites shouldn't leave the screen)
  • The barricade at slot #3 will be overwritten by the sprite of last enemy we generated.

A faster way to flow the RNG

In some cases, it's faster to flow RNG in the PSI menu.

Additions to the method of changing the position of sub-pixels

In addition to approaching the door differently, crossing the obstacle in a different way will slightly change the sub-pixel position of the character. This allowed Jeff to get through the first cliff in a short time.

Lag frames

  • chatterbox found that in the US version, sometimes the number of lag frames affects the result of a round in a battle.
  • EarthBound's lag frame generation appears to be very random. In order to decrease more lag frames, I had to give up a certain frames in the Saturn Valley approaching Dr. Andonuts. A specific movement in some places will also decrease lag frames.

Route change

  • In this run, chatterbox got 50 dollars at the hotel in Twoson. Instead, I chose to get the hamburger in the trash next to Onett's burger shop and sell cracked bat and the hamburger at the drugstore. This leaves us with the purchase of only one skip sandwich.
  • EarthBound Speedrun Community found a new cliff skip glitch, this cuts down considerably on the time it takes Jeff to get through the second cliff.

More details

  • I wasn't sure on in the making of this TAS if this will be faster than chatterbox's JPN version run, until a better sub-pixel position was found by thousand of re-recordings in Winters.
  • The RNG value flows while using the items.
  • If you approach the ladder horizontally, Ness will be pulled toward the ladder from a greater distance.
  • In the final battle, 4000 damage by Ness's attacks alone would be faster.
  • Keeps the number of enemies on screen low to decrease lag frames.
  • In the past I thought I should write the title and the subtitle when I were writing the game name, beacause I think it's more complete. But there almost no one on the internet would call this game "EarthBound - The War Against Giygas." So when the time I finished the whole TAS, I changed the game name "EarthBound - The War Against Giygas" in my WIP to "EarthBound", which is a very small change to the movie file.

Thanks

chatterbox, He showed me a way walk through the second cliff in Winters. Although I remade this part with fewer frames, his steps are still of great reference value. He also guided me in the technical aspects of the final battle. Most of this TAS's skillful explanations came from him. I'm very grateful.
EZGames69, He created a very good encode.
pirohiko, He gave me some advice on pass the first round of the battle with Giygas.
The judges of TASVideos, Their suggestions are important.
MarioPlayer, He created a temporary encode for me.

Possible improvements

  • Get more skip sandwiches without wasting too much time.
  • More precise sub-pixel manipulation.
  • Defeat Giygas faster with better RNG values.
  • Flowing RNG values at a faster rate.

Frame 126853
This is my first submission. And this is the first time I have written a comment in English. If there is any grammatical mistake, please correct me without hesitation.

Memory: judging
Memory: Replacing with 591 frame improvement.
Memory: Optimization appears solid. I had some questions but for the most part, the author gave me some good answers. There might be additional improvements possible with some reroutes but nothing conclusive at this stage.
The entertainment value here is better than previous Earthbound TASes, with one of the slower cutscenes in the game skipped in a quick fashion. There wasn't a ton of audience response, but what was there was positive.

A 58 minute submission vs a 54 minute submission that was referenced in the author's text. Did you submit this on accident or is there another reason you're using the US version cause that's big difference and I'm confused.

We would probably need a comparison of text differences between the JPN and USA versions. I assume USA version loses lots of time there, but would like to know for sure how much time it is.

Apart from the text and lag, there are few differences between the US version and the JPN version. I think I should use the US version.Because the US version is more popular and the motivation for using JPN version cannot just be faster text and less lag.I think...

Based on our movie rules on Japanese and US versions, using the US version is generally preferred. However, we do need to know exactly how many frames are lost from using the US version instead of the Japanese version. Otherwise, we can't tell if this movie actually is an improvement over the currently published movie.

I have made a SUPERCUT encode comparison between this run and the old Chatterbox Japanese run. Link to video A few things I should mention, I cut out alot of the longer cutscenes and didn’t include the ending after the credits, since the whole point is to see if this is faster in main gameplay. Which it appears so, once you remove any reagional differences. However I also removed every battle, including the Gigias battle, because realistically factoring out every battle for language differences is next to impossible to do. Now while it is faster. I would like to point out nearly 275 frames were lost during the walk to Gigias, as the sandwich wasn’t consumed to get there faster. I don’t know why this happened but would like an explanation from the author. Either way, this confirms that the run is faster in gameplay.

Thank you,EZGames69.Also I want to thank you for encoding this movie. I only got two Skip sandwiches in this run. Ness ate up the last sandwich on the way to Lumine Hall Sanctuary. So I'm not sure I'll be able to save more frames when I'm walking to Giygas...

Out of curiosity, where was the skip sandwich you weren't able to get?

In this run from chatterbox, he got 50 dollars from the NPC at the hotel of Twoson, which allows him to buy an extra skip sandwich. But I only have 66 dollars. So all I could buy was a cold remedy and one skip sandwich. We can find another sandwich in the trash can located in Threed, which is already got in my run.

Alright, now that we know it's faster than Chatterbox's run, we have to now compare with illayaya's and pirohiko's wip. since both runs use USA and all characters are named A, I dont have to change much. Link to video The biggest difference is in illayaya and piro's wip, they get a cookie from the sister, and they dont get the cheeseburger until after the onett skip. when they enter the ghost town, sharpRui36 gets to the first zombies faster than illayaya & pirohiko. I am unsure if the route is the same after the point where the WIP ends, I dont know if money has to be withdrawn from the bank like it was in this submission. it seems like you can get the needed items from selling both the burger and the cookie. I do fear that this isnt going to be an easy fix. Just from making both comparisons, I can tell that RNG is a major factor in this game. There's actually alot that is going on in this run than what people might think.

Their WIP uses a whole new route. So they don't need to withdrawen at the ATM and they don't need buy the cold remedy. As I know, that route hasn't been proven to be achievable. They used the new route and didn't have to go into a drugstore to buy the cold remedy, so they only need to get 9 dollars. In my run, I used the older route. I need to buy a cold remedy and a skip sandwich. And I need to keep at least 60 dollars. On the way to buy a cold remedy, I get the burger in the trash and withdrawen at the ATM. And I sell cracked bat and the burger for 16 dollars. At last, I hold a total of 66 dollars and I can buy what I needed.

illayaya and pirohiko grab a burger from the present after onett skip, is it possible to grab that, sell it at the market, and be able to buy another skip sandwich for Giygas?

Well, buying another sandwich will be a little more difficult. Apparently, grabbing this burger isn't enough. To buy another skip sandwich, we will need to sell this burger and get another 25 dollars. Or we can just go to the hotel of Twoson and get 50 dollars from the NPC, but it's a waste of time. There's a skip sandwich in the bottom left corner of Twoson, but I think taking it will be a waste of time, too.

In the fight with Giygas, 4000 damage by Ness alone would be faster.

The improvement was the PSI animation effect of Paula and Poo. If Paula uses Freeze α, or Poo uses Freeze β, the PSI animation effect will waste a lot of time. By using only normal attacks, we can save more time, because Ness' attack animation is relatively short.

Why do you lose a bunch of time to Chatterbox walking back to the hotel in Threed? Also would it be possible to manipulate the ghost/zombie spawns after the game over to occur any closer to the ladder? Would that potentially save time?

1.chatterbox and I use different paths, I need to decrease more lag frames, because lag frames affect RNG value and the number of lag frames in scene transition. So I chose a longer path. It made me lose several frames 2. Before we start Threed's second battle, it is difficult to spawn a ghost and a zombie,a faster way is to spawn other enemies to flow RNG.And if we spawn ghosts and zombies in this way, they will always be far from Ness & co (chatterbox also used this method in his JPN version run) 3. If we can manipulate them closer to the ladder before the second battle starts, it will undoubtedly save time. But in this case, we will need to spend more frames to spawn a ghost and a zombie at ideal location. This is likely to waste time

Also, as we cross the obstacles in different ways, the character's sub-pixel positions change slightly, which will directly affect Jeff's cliff skips. And this is another reason I use the longer path.

There is very little audience feedback on the actual entertainment quality of the run. It took a while for there to be a proper encode which is probably why but now that there is, would people like to chime in?

I’m not really that big on Earthbound, but I do understand why it’s so appealing to people. It’s really light hearted in tone and at times querky, it makes watching a TAS of the game feel relaxing. The crazy new Onett skip is pretty fascinating to watch, not to mention the fact that the entire world is just on the same grid, where these out of bounds warps are possible. I think this is a satisfying watch dispite not being familiar with the game, and I probably would enjoy it even more once I beat a casual play through myself. Yes vote.
