Game description:

Flicky is an arcade styled Genesis game in which a small blue bird (Flicky) tries to rescue some other bird's children. In doing so, he must travel through a series of houses, some being in Egypt, others in space. He must avoid the tigers and chameleons who just happen to be in the houses too, and occasionally he takes a break to look through the windows and see an undressed lady posing. This is a platform game developed by Sega and released in arcades in May 1984.

Emulator used:

 • Gens11b (resynced to BizHawk 2.5.2)

The goal of run

 • Improve some levels

Comments

I found some places for imrpoving. I walked close to the wall, found better route. I was inspired by Nathan's run who uploaded in 11th July 2011 and helped me to remember my childhood. In Summer 2007 I reached to 121th level.

Samsara: I've replaced the file with Spikestuff's resync to BizHawk, as it is the same run but much easier on the publication team. I've edited the emulator information to reflect this.
My main issue with this submission was this post detailing what appears to be about 8.5 seconds of improvement left in the run. I investigated this more closely and found a couple things. First, given the TAS precision of the run, the total improvement is likely going to be about half of what is expected due to the need to go out of the way to drop off chirps (which is also slower than dropping off one continuous chain by itself). Second, the one second's worth of improvement from skipping extra lives looks to require a specific score route that would mean the entire run would have to be redone. The author appears to be busy with a more time consuming improvement as well, and something like 3-4 seconds worth of improvement in a game like this isn't something I would reject over. If it was in fact the full 8.5 seconds, that'd be borderline, but it's likely I'd have still swung towards accept there.
As for the rest of the run: The optimization looks good, it's definitely an improvement over the published run, and every IL time either matches or beats the RTA records (it's a very loose IGT only timed to the second, "matching" RTA on these times still likely means a good number of frames worth of improvement over them). It's really not the most exciting game in the world, and the submission hasn't gotten much attention since it was submitted three weeks ago, so I'm accepting it to Vault as an improvement to the published run.

Is there any reason why you used Gens instead of BizHawk?

You mean like this? Also better ending input compared to the author's and still brings it up at the earliest possible stage clear.

Finally! I was wondering when a new TAS of this would come out. It does not disappoint and I love the new strategies for some of these levels like Round 44 in 9 seconds and abusing the floor clipping on Round 34 was funny xD However I noticed there are some improvements possible with minor changes to skip some of the bikini girl bonuses and extra life pauses, detailed in this guide. It was written up for RTA runs but there should still be viable methods here for skipping the five bikini girls and two extra life pauses.

Gens hasn't delays with inputs. Bizhawk has 2-3 frames.

Actually, for this game it's 1 frame. I should know since I did convert it. Lost 1 frame, Made up 4 frames with better ending input. (Could've been a handful more frames that could've been removed but to reiterate; it still brings up the earliest possible stage clear.)

I forgot to say one thing. When you are on close towards a floor, you can land faster than with jump of falling bird that takes more time.

Thanks, Winslinator. I didn't know that I can skip bikini bonuses. Now I know.

I recommend trying to implement these improvements. If you're successful, I can update the submission file before judging.

I’ll be encoding this by the way.
First, given the TAS precision of the run, the total improvement is likely going to be about half of what is expected due to the need to go out of the way to drop off chirps (which is also slower than dropping off one continuous chain by itself).
Can confirm I did not consider the door having to open and close an extra time for the separate chirp chains so this is probably more accurate.
Second, the one second's worth of improvement from skipping extra lives looks to require a specific score route that would mean the entire run would have to be redone.
Only a few of the first 16 or so levels would need redoing. And since there’s no RNG-dependent things to manipulate in the run (not as far as I know anyway), the subsequent levels should sync.
