recorded with nitsuja's mupen64 rerecording v8 found here: Forum/Topics/2934
16-minute 16-star playthrough of the first and one of the most versatile, action oriented 3-D games for the N64.
This tool-assisted movie is over a minute faster than the original test run, and takes many shortcuts favorable over the original ones. Most of the saved time is an accumulation of bits and pieces of optimization through Mario's movement and straighter paths to whatever destination.
What was very fortunate was that I was able to record with an analog stick, thus making radial positioning much more precise and ultimately making many pathways faster.
Thanks to Micheal Fried, Weatherton, nitsuja, Atma, and GeminiSaint for the useful strategies.
Abuses glitches. Takes damage to save time.

Bisqwit: Updated this submission as well (the movie length was calculated in wrong way).

Sadly I don't think I'll ever get around to doing 17:xx now... I watched the TAS run and it was just at a level that can never be matched. For me, a speedrun isn't about the endtime so much as it is about having great, impressive tricks in it. All the stuff in the TAS was just so crazy and inventive, and anything I did would pale in comparison. If I recorded a 17:43 run I'd feel slow and stupid, and if I mastered a few of the new TAS tricks to squeeze out another 20 or 30 or whatever seconds, I'd feel like an unoriginal copycat tool. Originality's kind of my thing I guess. Don't blame it solely on the new TAS though. Life's gotten really busy lately with senior year and college applications and stuff, and I honestly haven't done any speedrun stuff in over a month. I still might send in 18:08 sometime, if Marius doesn't top it (and assuming I didn't record over it in my arrogance at eventually beating it).

I voted yes, but I guess that it doesn't really matter anymore. So now we're at 54 yes votes to zero others. :) Thanks, everybody who helped out to make Nintendo 64 superplaying possible.

I have watched the avi now, and I'm voting Yes on this too. As Omega said though, not that it matters much anymore, but I still think this deserved yet another Yes vote! :) Amazingly done Spezzafer, this movie is really star-material in my opinion. Big thanks to DeHacked for making the avi so I could finally watch this.

any good reason why BitComet should still be banned from your trackers ? problems were solved since v0.59 months ago, unbanned everywhere but here... u_u Weatherton's link is dead for me as well (cannot connect to server) :(

I've already been through this and I have no desire to repeat it. Frankly, the more people bug me about it, the less likely I am to give in. Just for you, I'm going to enable bitcomet for a while. For the record, I wasn't targetting bitcomet so much as I was targetting clients with features which are bad for me to deal with. Their "peer sharing" and "DHT" are ideas which don't sit well with site administrators who want control over their BT offerings.

thanks a lot, currently getting the file. if you don't want to share it on your own tracker, which I totally understand, you do what you want with your resources, maybe would it be possible to upload the torrent on another (public ? bisqwit's ?) tracker ? that would preserve you from having to use yours. if there are others BitComet/BitLord users wanting to get the file, I could do the upload to some other place, so that DeHacked wouldnt be bothered anymore.

You're missing the point. These clients can be used to BYPASS any tracker at all. I don't want that. And in the event I ever had to place restrictions on who was allowed to download (I'll let your imagination determine a reason) then bitcomet can be used to work around this. Some buggy versions had no way of disabling this at all. Combined with a really bad and long-term history for being bad for swarm health, a tendency to be used as a leeching client (little or no uploading) and downrigt breaking protocol, too many people have hated it. Myself included. Is it fixed? I can't tell. No source code. Windows only. I'm not going any further because it's off-topic and I don't intend to start a flame war, even though I just lit the match.

What happens to the bunny star if you don't take it? Do you have to catch the bunny later or is the star there all the time?

I think you need to catch Mips again to make it appear. I also think this applies to all other stars, but I'm not 100% sure about it, but maybe 95% ;) For example if one kills the big Bob-Omb (the "first star") and skips it I think you need to kill him again to make it appear.

Makes sense. And Mips apperas first when you've caught 16 stars?

15 stars from which there has to be atleast one collected from level 6, one from level 7, and 1 from level 8.

Ok, that was what I thought, because if it wasn't that way I think it would be faster to stay in the lava land and kill som bullies. :)

I think both of the SSL stars are much faster than the bully-killing stars. Or at least, enough faster that only 1 star from LLL was used instead of 2.

Ok, you're probably right nitsuja, but it takes a little extra time to go to the SSL.

Thanks DeHacked for the torrent. I thought the movie was pretty good. The swimming looked like he bumped his head a couple of times and I think that for "Chip off the Old Block" it would be faster to do the stomp move again as he is standing up rather than jump across the back. Am I right in remembering you can do that through-the-block-boss glitch on the way up and on the way down? Voting yes.

Wow I didn't realize mario was such an acrobat. The movie looked good especially with all the wall glitches. Just wonderin if there are any faster stars to grab or if the order is set in stone.

The bowser levels were hilarious! I know this has been said. like 100 times, but a 120 star run would be spectacular. Great job!

I just watched this for like, the 6th time, but at 25% speed. Seeing exactly what's going on and having time to absorb it as its happening... just increased my amazement. Excellent.
