Dont forget that one of the stars in Dire Dire Docks you need a vanish cap to get to... (its behind a cage). Unless you can find some way to glitch into it. Can you exit from the secret aquarium level? I thought you have to be stationary and standing to do an exit....

Couldn't the secret slide wait until leaving Whomp's Fortress, if it's faster to reach it from there than from the main lobby? Anyway, the opening-door animation takes maybe 10 seconds, and going from the lobby to the secret slide can't take nearly that long.

behind a cage how? totally locked inside of it? i don't remember very well, can't i do some crazy jumps to go over the cage or something?

one has to enter it twice, and every time you finish it, you're sent to the center of the main hall.

It's underwater and inside a red cage I think. You are supposed to use both the metal and vanish cap to get to it but you can do vanish + long jump + fast swimming.

That's completely unrelated to what I said. Couldn't you go in the order of JRB->Whomp's->Secret Slide x2? (If it is faster to get from Whomp's to the secret slide than it is to get from the lobby to the secret slide the first time, I mean.)

the problem is, walking from the center of the main hall to the princess slide is longer than from JRB door to the princess slide, that's how it's related to what you said.

That's why I'm saying don't walk from the center of the main hall to the secret slide the first time! Whomp's Fortress is closer to the secret slide than the lobby start point is (unless I'm completely wrong about that...), so you shouldn't be comparing the difference of JRB->slide with lobby->slide, you should be comparing the difference of JRB->slide with Whomp's->slide.

I seem to remember the door unlocking being long though... like mario has to ready himself... extends his hand... a star forms and spins 5? times... then the message dialog about "reacting to star power"... then opening the door.

if you go from whomp's fortress to the slide for the first time, how do you plan to enter the princess slide the second time? that's what i'm saying. the way i have it, i already go from whomp's door to the slide once. but for the other time i go from the JRB door to the slide. like this: - JRB door -> slide -> center of main hall -> whomp's fortress -> slide -> center of main hall -> cool cool mountain. what you are suggesting is: - JRB exit -> whomp's fortress -> slide -> slide?

Ah, OK, I guess so, but anyway I really don't think there's much of a time loss there, not compared to the door reacting to the star's power and slowly opening.

OK I think these are the two paths that should be compared.... JRB (exit through door) -> PS1 -> WF -> PS2 JRB(exit level) -> WF -> PS1 -> PS2 They both have the same start and end points and seem to be optimal after the initial decision. EDIT: Yeah what FODA said 5 seconds before...

i don't think the door opening animation is THAT slow, so i'll test both but i think that exiting through the wall in JRB should be like this: - JRB exit -> slide -> whomp's fortress -> slide -> cool-cool mountain hmm doesn't seem to make any difference, but at least it doesnt show the same level twice in a row

Yeah it doesnt matter since the JRB exit and slide exit will be the same but mixing it up would be more interesting..

I don't think the door animation is that slow either. And by doing this: "- JRB exit -> slide -> whomp's fortress -> slide -> cool-cool mountain" one should eliminate running back n forth. Why? Because after finishining the Princess Secret Slide you are set back to the main lobby, right?

right. i've been thinking here, and there are many factors that make an influence in the total time saved by using the door glitch of JRB, but i really think it's faster that way now. because otherwise, one would have to walk towards bob-omb battlefield twice from the center of the hall. That alone would make up for the time lost doing the glitch.

I think no one will blame you for a couple of seconds lost on a 2 hours + run if you lose them to include such a neat trick. Of course if it's faster, there's no question.

Did you find a way to get the 3 red coins out of the water that you normally get after you resurfaced the sunken ship? If not, I'm affraid you'd have to do plunder in the sunken ship before the red coins and opening the cannon. You'll still have the cannon's benefit for 4 stars, which isn't all that bad

I just tested now and using the exit in JRB is 3 seconds faster than opening the door.

Did you compare it with going to Princess Secret Slide?

yea. exiting through the door or through the exit option, then going to the princess slide.

Aha. Hmm. Well, to make it look less wasting running space in the main hall the route could perhaps be changed to: 1. JRB (8 stars with the secret one) 2. Exit with the pause trick, do CCL 3. Get one star from Princess Secret Slide 4. Do Whomp's Fortress 5. Get the second star from Princess Secret Slide 6. Get the red hat and the star in there 7. Do Bomb-Omb Battlefield 8. Spank Bowser What do you guys think? Perhaps doing CCL as the second world will waste a few frames compared to the the Princess Secret Slide there instead?

CCL? you mean cool cool mountain? i think its slower because its better to do the rooms in the right first then go working all the way to the left.

I thought it was just a known feature that they give you a couple of extra coins if you jump on their backs a few times.

they give you 5 coins if you kill them (stomping on their back once). but what i did was get 2 coins without killing him (and he still gave me 5 coins after i killed him). what happened was this: i backflip jump just before he started falling, then in the air i pressed Z and while he was falling, mario got stuck on its top surface, then after he fell on the ground mario was sitting on him and that generated 1 coin but i was pushed away to the ground. i jumped on him (without attacking) to grab the coin and that generated another coin. then the enemy got up, i waited for him to fall again and killed him, gaining 5 coins. oh humm, it seems that they really do give 1 coin each harmless jump on their back... :P
