SK8-BIT is a homebrew skateboarding game released for the Game Boy Color by DH13. You can play as one of two different skaters and go through one of two modes: Challenge and Freeskate. This TAS plays through the "Freeskate" mode until the first loop ends.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: BizHawk 2.9 (also syncs with 2.9.1) with SameBoy and AGB BIOS for potential console verification (Alyosha hey hi hello)
  • Objective: complete first loop of the Freeskate mode
  • Genre: Platformer
  • Genre: Homebrew

Comments

This TAS completes 15 levels, which are slightly longer than in the Challenge mode, and then quits to main menu, as the levels loop. No idea if quitting is the appropriate ending point, but it can be changed later. actually yeah it has to be changed, see forums. movie replaced. Like with #8144: LoganTheTASer & BlackWinnerYoshi's GBC SK8-BIT "Challenge" in 05:03.35, the gameplay is trivial. It also requires much less A holding (only 197 213 if aiming for fastest completion, compared to 1289). It's my first solo GBC submission, and a solo submission in general. or is it? No, I didn't use TAStudio for some reason that's why there's no rerecords
You need the GBC+AGB BIOS to replay the movie, LogansGamingRoom probably wants to do that. Place the agb.bin or-whatever-it's-called file in the Firmware folder, it has 2304 bytes and has SHA1 of fa5287e24b0fa533b3b5ef2b28a81245346c1a0f

Stage by stage comments

the first one doesn't require an A press, how convenient. oh, and did you know pannenkoek saved half A press on that stupid star? crazy!

Other comments

Possible improvements: probably none actually, nymx found one by just jumping farther or something, see forums for more info movie replaced
Suggested screenshots (according to the frame counter in BizHawk): 10831 (YouTube thumbnail), 15191 (second YouTube suggestion), maybe more if I could get that portable automatic screenshotter lol

nymx: Claiming for judging.

nymx: As the author has mentioned, this is very trivial. Nothing really to figure out, in terms of optimization...as far as I can tell. Author has chosen to end the inputs at the selection screen, meaning that a future submission would have to do the same, to hold up in a comparison.
Accepting to "Standard" for publication as a new "Freeskate" branch.

BlackWinnerYoshi: I actually said updating the movie is fine, unless I said something wrong? Would it require rejudging from someone else because you created that movie that ends input earlier? EDIT: also, I forgot to mention it lacks cycle count EDIT2: so it needs to be added back (734245292 cyclecount @ 2097152 clockrate) - the rerecord count of 24 can probably be removed too PostPubEdit: using this Lua script, it appears the true rerecord count should be 400: https://github.com/TASEmulators/BizHawk/issues/3707#issuecomment-1641377901

nymx: Updating with trimmed movie file and corrected cycle count.

nymx: Set rerecord count to zero.

despoa: Processing...

After reviewing your submission, you seem to have some concern with where it ends. Here is my synopsis: As long as the inputs complete the loop and brings it back to the beginning of some kind, then you are good. In this case, this would mean you can take that last pit and jump higher so that you can end your input earlier. From my experimentation, it can be ended 10 frames earlier. So your trimmed file, with the return back to the menu isn't necessary. There is no question, in regards to optimization...only how it ends. Someone can come back and obsolete this submission if you don't take care of that now. I've uploaded an updated movie for you to examine. https://tasvideos.org/UserFiles/Info/638216777407005027 How would you like to proceed?
I recently discovered that if you haven't reached a level of frustration with TASing any game, then you haven't done your due diligence. ---- SOYZA: Are you playing a game? NYMX: I'm not playing a game, I'm TASing. SOYZA: Oh...so its not a game...Its for real? ---- Anybody got a Quantum computer I can borrow for 20 minutes? Nevermind...eien's 64 core machine will do. :) ---- BOTing will be the end of all games. --NYMX

Well, since the "Challenge" TAS ends on the last input required to reach the killscreen, I think this "Freeskate" TAS can end on the last input required to complete the loop (what this updated movie does).

Is it possible to replace it without rejudging? (see bottom of submission notes for more details) (I got an error https://postimg.cc/9zntmL5t when trying to post)

Surprisingly good sound tracks on this homebrew! Would be curious what the original tracks were sourced from. However the tas gameplay here would have been much much better if it was aimed for entertainment. It is a skating game but almost no tricks are performed in fact looks like almost no inputs either. Meh vote, otherwise would have been a No vote if not for the strong audio tracks.

Does doing skateboard tricks in this mode waste time

Probably not, but I'm lazy see the rerecord count lol Not that it matters for a movie being acceptable, and I'm not planning to be a top TASer either, so /shrug
