Touhou is a shooting game a.k.a Bullet Hell franchise made by Ota Junya. This run shows 11th Shrine Maiden Project a.k.a Touhou 11 Chireiden ~ Subterranean Animism Lunatic difficulty.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: hourglass-r90
  • Touhou 11 Lunatic difficulty without getting hit or using the item called a bomb
  • Tried to score by grazing and getting point items as much as possible

CasualPokePlayer: Claiming for judging.
CasualPokePlayer: Hello scratchtas, and welcome to TASVideos.
The movie submitted does not appear to be sufficiently optimized for our submission standards. Casually watching the TAS (without any knowledge of Touhou itself), I've noted several things off:
  • In several spots, you wait out the timer and accumulate "graze." However, you don't appear to wait out the timer to its fullest.
  • Also, in many other spots you do not appear to do this at all.
  • Playing back the movie myself, I've also noted you seemed to have fairly suboptimal initial menuing.
Other people, far more familiar with the game, have also noted several optimization issues in the discussion thread.
Ultimately too, this run fails to beat an existing record (under the same rules) by around 750 million points. Several more other records can also be found with a bit of searching which this movie fails to beat.
As horrible as working with Hourglass may be (which I understand completely), we still ultimately require that our movies match/beat existing records, including non-TAS records. As such, I must reject this run.

I do love watching these crazy bullet hell tases. I have a question about the branch "Lunatic Perfect Scoring" though. The difficulty is Lunatic, but what does "perfect scoring" mean? I did see several videos with higher scores. 5,255,737,110 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdDADWaQdyA&ab_channel=TouhouReplays 2,193,461,420 is the highest one listed here with what looks like a replay file I think. https://www.restartsyndrome.com/board.php?id=16&mode=Lunatic&view=verified

According to the submission comments, it seems "perfect scoring" is described as not losing any lives as well as not using any bombs whilst doing some scoring strats. Anyways, one inconsistency I noticed is that the .wtf claims it was done at 60 FPS, yet the video title reads "2hu11 LNN 75fps TAS". Indeed, the replay that was loaded in the author's encode does show a framerate closer to 75 FPS....however, it seems running the game with the input latency set to Automatic (3rd option) produces that behaviour in VMware Workstation 16. Setting it to Fast (4th option), for instance, gives the proper 60 FPS. I tested running the .WTF with the input latency set to Fast, and it seems to at least sync on the opening segment. Didn't check further than that.

Right, the shmup communities have their own challenge categories. In the video comment it has (LNNFS) in it so I guess Lunatic No miss No bomb Full Spell? Looking around this submission does seem to be the highest I can find without digging super deep for this category. The other highest scores are around~1.3 billion while this tas is ~2 billion. Very nice!

This is a very, very unoptimized run for a category like this, I'd go through every unoptimal segment in this movie, but the post would be about 3000 words, so here's a snippet from stage 1 and 2. Since this is a TAS, every nonspell and spell card should be timed down fully to 0 for extra graze, as the spell card bonuses do not matter when compared to how graze works. Graze in Touhou 11 affects the Point Item Value Multiplier, for every 100g, you get an extra 0.01x point item value. A rough estimate of the item count for a NoMiss NoBomb play of SA is going to be about 2,150. It could be a bit higher than this depending on 4midboss kill technique, but let's just assume that there are 2,150 items in the game, shall we? Stage 1 : Already we're off to a very unoptimized play; the WR by ior gets 2,960 Graze after Kisume (stage 1 midboss), while scratchtas gets only 652. With some rough calculations, we can estimate that the score loss from this is a massive 80 million points, already. (2110 * 200,000 = 422m | 2110 * 200,000 * 1.2[graze multiplier change] = 506,400,000) Entering Yamame, Ior has 4,070 Graze, and scratch has 1,328. A difference of 2,700. Mind you, while the two categories are different (One is allowed deaths and bombs, the other is not) The two runs routes are identical to this point, so this lost graze is purely the result of very poor optimization. On Yamame, Scratch also just doesnt time down anything. Opting for spell bonuses, which is so completely not worth it it's not even funny. Spell 1's bonus is 3mil, while the score you would get from timing this spell down fully is approximately this : 2,020 * 200,000 * 1 = 404,000,000 | 2,020 * 200,000 * 1.06 = 428,240,000, so the score LOST from going for spell bonus is 25 Million points. Non2 is also killed asap, you can just estimate the score loss if you want. But once Yamame final begins is the final time we can compare with ior. Ior will bomb the 2nd wave of the final spell, and their graze difference is 4,800. Stage 1 alone shows a lack of care for maximum scoring, but let's just continue through the rest of the game, comparisons to Ior from this point on will no longer be around, as the route will differ. But I'll do my best to estimate a score loss at the end (if I bother to look at everything) Stage 2 : The grazing on the yinyangs before the midboss are very poor, losing chunks of points as you usually will want to let them fire everything they can before killing them in a TAS. Let's be generous and say 350 graze is lost here. (350) The yellow/green yinyangs are also killed instead of stalled for graze. (850) Parsee non1 is instakilled (1,850) Same for spell 1 (2,850) And non2 (3,500) Spell 2 doesnt even do the scoring strat. (5,000+4,800) This feels more like a speed run than a "scoring run" due to how much score is just lost from a lack of actual scoring. The rest of the run also features millions of points lost at every attack in the game, I can't really be bothered to look at the rest of it from just skimming stage 3. Notable exception is Stage 5 boss, Orin's 2nd nonspell where he misses out on like 50 point items aka 40 million points at the very unoptimized graze count at this point in the game (and when we add the 10,000 graze lost in stage 1 and 2, this score loss jumps to 50 million, let alone the rest from stage 3,4 and 5.

As an avid Touhou fan, scoreplayer and score TASer myself, I will have to agree that this TAS is incredibly unoptimized and in my opinion made by someone who doesn't really understand the ins and outs of the game. For someone who is even just decently familiar with the game this is already obvious in the first five seconds of gameplay where a TAS could easily attain every graze point possible without any resource use (323) when this TAS only gets 75. Graze is basically the cornerstone of scoring the game; you have to maximize your graze as well as possible. Most of what I can say about the gameplay would be a repeat of what Pearl has already analyzed and more. The WR holder in this game (ior) who scored 5.25 billion in this game with the use of resources, also has an LNN (No Miss No Bomb) that scores 2.843 billion. And えなめる (Enameru) also has an LNN that scores 2.333 billion, with shottypes that would not even have a huge difference in score potential. That is to say that the TAS being submitted here scores less in the same category type than two existing runs done by real players do (by 243 and 753 million). https://eientei.boards.net/thread/527/touhou-lnn-lnnn-thread This would probably be more appropiate to categorize as a Lunatic No Miss No Bomb (or Perfect) TAS without any scoring tags. I don't think it deserves a speedrun tag either, as then the TAS wouldn't be supergrazing Yamame's second nonspell - missing out on damage output.

ior's MarisaA LNN has a replay here: https://maribelhearn.com/replays/lnn/ior/th11_udirMA.rpy Scoring 750 Million points higher than this movie with the same restrictions. (2,843,113,180)
