Played with Mupen64-rerecording v8, much thanks to nitsuja.
Aims for fastest single player completion under default settings.
Fox was chosen because he has the fastest running speed out of the available characters on start up, and one of his moves is less dependent on frame usage than almost all other moves-- his down b ground cancel. This proved to be very useful as you'll see. It was for these two qualities I chose him, but there's too many character variables to know just yet who would be the best for TAS.
Started recording at 12pm, and finished at 7.5am. The game, I believe, looks very cool for TAS. This is probably the most painstaking ssb project I've undertaken since I forced myself to complete all character's very hard mode with 1 stock no continue, eh 6 years ago? How much of my life I've wasted on this game since it came out... it's depressing.
Anyhow, I really hope the viewer gets a kick out of this.
yes, that run completed metal mario faster, but that's because dk was used. dk will have an advantage on some levels due to his capability to hold and walk simultaneously, and it might very well be necessary to use him on a very hard completion; however, i felt that fox would overall be faster, despite his disadvantage on metal mario's stage, because he runs through or to things faster and only uses 6 frames for his most used attack.
perhaps it might be more appropriate for a seperate speed run of all the bonus completions for every character. i have a friend who's currently making one, and i did do a few characters break the target optimal routes with great success. i agree that it's more entertaining, but i'd say it interferes with the original goal of the game.
EDIT:
for those of you who are having problems watching it in an emulator, i made this for that i'll temporarily host:

Yeah, I second that. You really should play in the hardest difficulty level, as well as completing the bonus levels as quickly as possible. Dropping off is just boring. Also, you may try to get the highest score you can get while still aiming for fastest time completion. Don't forget you can get "Fighting stance" for a few more points if you press L just before the announcer shouts "Game set!"
you're right, but remember that there's a huge clash in getting a high score and getting a fastest completion. these are all seperate objectives. to combine them all in one produces way too many variables that could nearly be impossible to have a focused completed run. for instance, every bonus gotten will unavoidably add frames at the end of the run simply by having it pop up. it would be in the speed runners interest to minimize bonuses, if anything.
i agree about hardest difficulty, and that's something i'll do if i give it another go, but if i'm going to play for speed, everything has to be frame perfect and route optimized. isn't that what this site's about?
Eh, yeah... I figure that whatever you do to get the most score will be pretty fast anyway, or at least really cool, so I don't think speed should be the priority.

Although speed is extremely important, the MAIN focus is entertainment. Sometimes speed is sacrificed if doing it the fastest is unbearably boring, such as in street fighter. It still looked very fast and was quite entertaining, but there was still a lot of speed sacrificed to avoid being overly repetitive.
it's going to be repetitive at least for yoshi team, kirby team, and polygon team any way you do it. i have an idea though. i've been playing with different characters, and i believe i've found one that's got a few unique properties that make it especially usable for speed as well as adds to the cool factor, he'll probably require a more variety of moves, too.
how about this:
aims for fastest completion
played on hardest difficulty
does not use death as a shortcut (bonuses)
would that satisfy everyone?
yeah, this seems ok^^ i dont care if its going to be repetitive in the mass enemies levels..
MAIN focus is entertainment? lots of ppl here dont think this..

I disagree. The DK run uses a larger variety of moves and kept me entertained. DK even picked up and effectively used a weapon. Fox used the same move on entire groups of enemies vs. the Yoshi, Kirby and Fighting Polygon teams, and throughout the run.
I don't care if the bonus stages are skipped or completed. It's normal for bonus stages to be skipped to save time on this site. How entertaining completing the bonus stages is depends on the character used. It can range from amazing to ho-hum.
I think the set of goals that it sounds like you've settled on are good ones. Basically, keep doing what you're doing, but do it at the hardest difficulty and see if you can mix up the moves whenever possible. Fastest completion of this game is way more interesting than most fighting games because enemies don't just run out of health and fall down after some massive, repetitive combo; it's fastest to creatively throw them off the level and prevent them from getting back up.
In most cases fastest is most entertaining because it requires incredible reflexes, accuracy, weapon selection, shortcuts and glitches to be used and abused. The "wow" factor comes from seeing how fast a game can be beaten. A few exceptions are made, and some genres are more entertaining with other goals, but I think most people are most wowed by a world record completion time.

okay, i've started on the new movie. i decided on hardest difficulty / fastest time / use death as a shortcut. after playing around with a few characters, i've decided that fox is still the fastest. i've found a faster route for the first few rounds by simplifying the attack pattern, albeit it's repetitive-- it's the fastest thing. i don't want to do anything other than the fastest completion at this point. i'd rather take this game seriously like so many other ones on this site.
im with you.. im with yooooooouuuuuu.. take my hand, take me somewhere new, dont know who you are, but i..
im with you, because bonus stages can be done later in a separate run^^ just try to be creative whenever its possible

I still don't see why we're giving time priority over score.
Oh, and wouldn't it be cool to beat Captain Falcon at the end? Do that, but just beforehand, speed through the credits while still hitting every name! I would love that!
put yourself in my rocketpack if that poochie is one outrageous dude
yeah, i didn't think about that. good idea.
edit: i'm not doing a score game (at least for now), because i don't want to wait around forever trying to get the cpu to kill themselves for pacifist. it took an hour just to find out how to do that for metal mario (despite my already knowing how to get his done). but if i were to do high score, every level that can pacifist will be (not just the easy ones). by the way, if everything goes as planned for this run, it should be fox's world record (for score).
Huh, so it's that good a bonus that you would try for it every time? Hmm... Well, you wouldn't get the bonus points for damage or most of the move bonuses, anyway.

found a better and way to beat giant dk, and i'm up to samus. experimenting with lesser combos to see how much damage she needs to take first. since it's very hard, about a second is added to every level just about since they try to jump back on.
