Digimon Racing is a kart racing game with its own spins in the genre and another attempt of mine to complete TASVideos with more variety of good obscure games.
This TAS tackles the 3 Main Cups with Gomamon: Western, Eastern and Central. The other cups aren't played because they don't show off new stages or bosses, just use the same as before in a different order with no extra difficulty. The settings put the AI on Hard .
Game objectives
- Fastest completion of each stage and boss
- Takes damage to save time
- Uses RNG Manipulation and precise skips to complete levels faster
Gomamon and his evolution have the best top speed and not so good handling, but TAS solves that issue.
Some laps were slower to manipulate not being hit by a Thunder strike, an item that hits you without any possibility of evasion.
There are a handful of stages in which some bigger skips were not possible because the game tracks your progress in the racing course in a way that doesn't allow for huge skips of the course's completion.
Special Meter
The meter does a bunch of different things simultaneously. When it's filled by a lot or when it's almost empty, it changes the digimon form and its top speed! When completely filled, the digimon can launch a special attack. Using regular items also consume the meter.
Bosses
The bosses have specific vulnerability periods and their fights are basically getting to an item as fast as possible to hit them as much as possible. The challenge is you still need special meter to use the item so you need to fill the meter a little bit before shooting. Also the stage layouts are varied and require some creative navigation.
<Western Cup>
The first stage is the best example of how the progress check disallows for huge skips, that island would allow to go much further in skipping the course if there were no checks.
The second stage Toy Town has some jumping to extend the boost pads.
The third stage Desert Cliffs has a useless OOBs, here i failed to manipulate not getting struck by the Lightining item, this is one of the reasons why some laps are slower.
The fourth stage Swamp Bog also has turbo extensions with jumps plus some very finnicky maneuvering around Pixiemon traps. The shield avoided another Lightning ruining the race.
<Eastern Cup>
The first stage allows for the double jump glitch but it was useless, not even jumping the pool was allowed by the game's progress check. A fun stage nonetheless.
The second stage Coastline shows off how the jumps keep the boost for a little longer and has some great turbo jumps.
The third stage Underwater has insane skips with turbo jumps. Otherwise, it's just a lot of very sharp turns. I have no idea why i sometimes can jump in the air.
The fourth stage Polar Iceland is extremely boring, just sliding and turning and no skips at all, a sad stage overall.
Diaboromon is a little difficult to handle, i wish it could be one cycle as well.
<Central Cup>
The second stage Snocap Mountain has probably the most beautiful skip in the game, the navigation is a hassle because of the snowball throwing digimon.
The third stage Caves is pretty straight forward but extremely precise in its turns.
The fourth stage Cloud Kingdom is literal heaven but also for having so many skips, damn the progress check once again, we could skip the half of the stage if it weren't for it...
Malomyostimon was interesting cause i got an early shot by skipping the water!
Better Rng Manip would make Turbo item more acessible and crack some more records.
The other cups could be played with copy paste of inputs but i'm not good at that, they're all the same.
I'm more and more into the digimon series and i highly recommend you to take an interest in the franchise.
Thanks to all the Digimon and Anime Speedrun discord members ! Make Digimon Great Again!
nymx: Claiming for judging.
nymx: Dropping this for someone else to take. I get the idea of playing out unique content here, but I'm not so sure of it in this case. Leaving this for another judge.
Sorry for the delay.
Samsara: This ended up being weird because of the way the game operates. For a goal like this, it would normally make more sense to play everything out as individual tracks, but the game doesn't have all of them open from a fresh file. They need to be played in Cup Race to be unlocked in Quick Race and/or Time Trial. Since the game conveniently puts all 12 tracks and 3 bosses in the first three Cups, this is the fastest and most direct way of playing through every stage from a fresh file. A bit unorthodox, yes, but that's entirely the game's fault. This might be TASVideos but we can't ALWAYS avoid the normal restrictions of a game.
A note about playing through the rest of the Cups: A TAS that does that probably would obsolete this one just purely based on 100% content overlap, but since the other Cups are just the exact same levels in loosely themed packs, I don't think there's really any interest in going that far. It shouldn't prevent this one from being published either way, especially since it's very well done even in the face of the most aggressive rubberbanding I've ever seen in a racing game. Accepting!
