3 years later with new starts and new routing... That's right! A new Oddysee 100% PSX TAS is here! The new routing and strats have been mostly discovered by l1ndblum! This movie is 19 seconds faster than the current published run.

Flamingo warning!!

This is what realistically sounds like when there's lots of Sligs in DDG mode! Be warned!

Technical Stuff

* Emulator Used: Bizhawk v2.11 (Otoshock)
 BIOS used: SCPH7003.bin
ROMS used:
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee (USA) bin and cue

Game Objectives

  • Rescues All 99 Mudokons (100% Completion)
  • Heavy Glitch Abuse
  • Uses Major Skips
  • Manipulates luck (RNG)
  • Uses death to save time

Glitches Used

Death Delay (Sprite Corruption)

Often abbreviated as DDG it makes Abe invincible and can corrupt his sprite and eventually become invisible if he rolls into a bomb or jumping over a greande, allowing him to get past things that would kill Abe. Abe will die if he falls of a ledge or gets zapped. A video made by Sligfantry can show you how this glitch works:

Auto Turn Delay

This glitch works by standing on the edge of the ledge and pressing the down button quickly and run towards a spot where you would like to hoist down. You will need to press either 'left/down' or 'right/down' depending on which direction Abe was facing.

Stop Turn and Backwards Jump

By timing this glitch perfectly you can make Abe stop and turn. To set it up, Abe needs to be standing near a ledge (pressing up whilst turning around) you will be able to make Abe do a backwards jump. Notice that when you press the opposite direction to where Abe is standing at the incorrect frame, Abe will just jump up and stand. But if you time it perfectly, Abe will jump backwards and possibly jump to another screen. This will allow you to jump backwards to areas and skip Zulags. In a 100% run it will allow you to get to secret areas quicker and it skips a section of Stockyards Escape after finishing the secret area. Sligfantry's video can show you how this glitch works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIo1TJUBGlo

Multiple Backwards Jump

Whilst performing a backwards jump, simply press up/jump and Abe will do a multiple backwards jump and in this run Abe will use it to skip Zulag 3 to get to Zulag 4.

LogTurn

For this strat, I stand underneath the ledge, pressing Up and Circle (Up and Square also works!) in quick sucession on which Abe will say "I don't know!". This strat means Abe doesn't need to do any extra sliding to store the backwards jump.

Diagonal fall

This is done by combining the stop turn and the auto turn glitch. It is used as a time saver in Monsaic Lines and Free Fire Zone.

Quick Portal Closure

This run contains a glitch which saves a few frames. Since the latest Maximum Casualties TAS, it is possible to get 1.5 chants in before running past the portal.

Jumping from a Roll

A new thing originally discovered by Himmdwag, in some parts of the game Abe will jump from a roll!

Far grabs

In some places like RuptureFarms and Stockyards Return, Abe will do a far grab on which will make Abe jump from a roll to the next ledge a few frames earlier than running and jumping to a ledge normally.

Improvements

RuptureFarms

In this run, I do the grinders area first, then the grenade and Sligs room.

Monsaic Lines

I do a stop turn before chanting with the bird portal like in the Maximum Casualties TAS.
In this update, I do Scrabania first this time.

Paramonian Temple

Just like in the Max Cas run, I do the faster Bees DDG in Trial 2 and do the LogTurn in Trial 1.

FFZ

In the last part of this section, I do a slide towards the ledge, so there's enough time to deactivate the UXB so Abe doesn't have to wait around for the Slig to move down.

Zulag 1

By doing Scrabania first this time, the missing ring finally appears in this run so there's no need to go up and down the lift to get the ring back. Also, I do exactly the same as the entry to get the DDG.

Zulag 3

In this area I change the door order similar to the Max Cas run, but I have to set it up so I can use the Shrykull to kill all the Sligs at the start of the second room in Zulag 4.

Closing Remarks

I need to thank l1ndblum for all his IL and full game PC runs and for him finding most of these new strats! Next update will be any% and hopefully my first Windows submission. Stay tuned!

The downloadable encode seems to be broken. I tried it on two different machines that have 2 different OSes with 2 different players (MPV, ffplay) and they absolutely desync in wild ways no matter what. For example, the video often stops along with seek bar while the audio is continuing. Doing seek from there with player running from command line causes explosion of error messages. I never had such issue with tasvideos downloadable encodes, include other tases of this game, so I am pretty sure something is wrong with this one.

Have you tried using VLC to see if the same problem persists?

I hate VLC because it has pretty unresponsive seek bar (tried that on 5 different configurations, because I was told that this is the best media player ever, for which I can't argue in regards to its media capabilities), but oh well, it is not that hard to install and give it a try. Well, for VLC, only the first frame is ever rendered. When doing a seek, only the frame at the seek pos is rendered. The console log is exploded with thousands "Could not convert timestamp" and "Timestamp conversion failed" errors. ffplay and mpv did a better job, but the errors they gave were still about timestamps. mpv did the best so far with glitches occuring at 20 second long segments spaced a minute or two apart alongside the entire movie. EDIT: OK, I was able to play the file for few minutes without artifacts or glitches via "gst-launch-1.0 playbin uri=file:///home/user/abesoddysee-tasv4-100p-samtastic.mp4" command, utilizing gstreamer. But this is definitely not the player I would like to use. I also tried to redownload the file several times to exclude download errors. Anyway, exactly same behaviour of mpv and ffplay on different machines with different OSes hints however that the problem does not lies in the hardware.
