Well hey, it's been 4 years since the previous World Cup. Who's everyone rooting for this time? All I can say is that I have zero confidence in the NL squad this time around, lol I expect there will be lots of spectacle though. For better or worse.

Walgrey's soccer TASes are more interesting, IMHO.

Well, they're definitely faster, at any rate. Though they can't match the one World Cup match that's been played so far in terms of how much of a clownshow that was. This is going to be a long and wild month.

Qatar besides being one of the most abusive areas in the world, had a fair share of controversies during FIFA '22. Also Noxxa is clearly quoting themselves from the previous thread that there'll be a runback thread, and what do you know, a runback. Doesn't take a rocket scientest to figure that out. Anyways different country as the main host, same hostile shit unfortunately. Good luck to all the teams and referees...

As I'm neither referencing my home country, nor expressing hate towards a group of people in a discriminatory manner, I don't believe it counts as "jingoist hate speech". But yes, I did write that in 2022, in opposition to the Qatari government's use of slave labour, migrant worker deaths, lack of LGBTQ rights, lack of women's rights, restrictions on fans, and general sportswashing. I stand by what I wrote.

You can apply those remarks on a lot of countries. Shouldnt you say fuck USA by now? Staying on topic, USA slaughtered Paraguay and they look sharp. It will obviously get tougher onwards. Going to watch Brazil tonight and see how they perform. France have an outstanding team and I bet they will go far.

Do you want me to? I made this topic to discuss football, not to discuss country politics or an offhand quote I made four years ago. There's plenty of things I could say about the current USA government or issues coming from them hosting the World Cup this time around, but that's not what I made this topic for. On topic, the USA team's performance last night really impressed me. Feels like that came out of nowhere. They could definitely cause a big scare on a team or two in the knockouts if they continue playing like that.
France have an outstanding team and I bet they will go far.
I think there's a very good shot they'll win or at least be in the final. I'd be surprised if they didn't make the semis. Although of course, plenty of crazier things have happened.

I haven't kept up with the World Cup in some time, so I'm not rooting for anyone in particular this year. I did see the first half of the Brazil v. Morocco match. Morocco's performance seemed better than Brazil's. This match was more entertaining than the last time that I recall watching one of Brazil's matches--a knockout stage against France, possibly around 20 years ago. Both teams played pretty defensively then, which made it boring. Yesterday, Brazil and Morocco both had some nice attempts at offense.

Well, that wasn't the worst performance from NL to start off, though failing to maintain the goal lead twice vs Japan sucks a bit. Bit of a snoozefest first half, but the second half had some good action.

Feels like the graphics designer behind Google doodles is some crazy foreseer! That doodle of a goalkeeper cutting the shot came earlier on the day before Spain vs Cape Verde match where CV's goalkeeper was showing the marvels of clean-sheeting. Even the keeper's number (1) matches!
TASing is like making a film: only the best takes are shown in the premier. https://xkcd.com/3246/

The primary goalkeeper traditionally always gets number 1 in a football team, so this isn't as crazy as it sounds. It is a fun tidbit though, Cape Verde's goalkeeper did do some marvelous work in that match.

Much better performance against Sweden this time, though defense still looked iffy at times. Probably a bit of a flattering scoreline, we really maximized goals from the opportunities we had whereas Sweden didn't from theirs. Is this NL team really going to give me hope again?

I caught the second half of the Belgium v. Iran match but missed whatever it was that led to the red card. That did cause notable issues for Belgium. They still kept up the pressure, though, especially toward the end of the match. Both goalkeepers had some nice saves. Overall, my impression was that Belgium did better on offense and Iran on defense. EDIT: Just finished watching the Cape Verde v. Uruguay match. That first goal by Cape Verde was amazing. I watched on a Spanish-language channel and didn't understand why Uruguay had a goal canceled in the second half. Someone was offside, possibly? Impressive effort by both teams, regardless.

Something that's bothered me for awhile. The actual trophy of the World Cup....... isn't even a cup. That kinda defeats the purpose of it being a World "Cup" doesn't it?

The first version of the trophy, named after Jules Rimet, was an actual cup. You can read its history online. I finally saw a match in this tournament that didn't end in a draw. Nice work by Argentina against Jordan. The goal by Messi was superb. The Algeria v. Austria match was a bit more interesting with the back-and-forth goals, especially those two in injury time.

Well never mind lol. We found ways to lose all possible momentum after getting a lead again, and then that penalty shootout was disastrous. At least we don't have to get dragged on further like this anymore for now.

I just woke up myself to the win of our team. Honestly, this was the exact same scenario happened back in 2022 against Spain. I won't say our team isn't strong, but Netherlands is a tougher opponent, and going to penalties is one of the scenarios I expected ngl.

Your team was way better all throughout the match, it honestly shouldn't have even gone to penalties. We have decent players, but our strategy was just awful, and the subs were even worse. It's beyond me how our coach still has a job. You should definitely be favored against Canada next, but after that you're probably projected to play France, which would be very hard. But it could be interesting for sure.

Alright, if we get past Canada and face France in quarter-finals, then it's just 2022 repeating itself. We must win France at this point, no other choice!
