Regarding the game Gnat Attack, there are 3 levels which repeat over and over, except that you get an icon in the top left corner of the screen every time you complete the game until you've beaten it 15 times in a row. When you beat the game for the 16th time, the icons disappear and the game starts over. http://www.classicdosgames.com/interviews/gnatattack.bmp

I started painting today and also animated a little. The program is fun, but so far from being really enjoyable.. at least when it comes to offering what I would like it to be able to do. :/ The biggest problem would be the low resolution (one wrong click, one slight wrong movement of the mouse and your picture is MESSED!) and the restrictions on animation (can't set amount of frames except for the 4/6/9 option and can't exactly define the timeframe of how long to show each frame). Haven't played around with the composing options enough to be able to comment on those. I'll start composing tonight or tomorrow. If anyone is interested in savestates as a sort of WIP showing, I'd be glad to share and get some feedback. The creation of the movie would follow, if I'm satisfied with the results (which don't look that great actually.. still have to decide on whether to stick with the current project or not).

I doubt that you're being serious, but: No, you can't. 9 frames just aren't quite enough. Even a quickie like Teen Girl Squad needs more.. think 40 frames and upwards. And that's 40 frames that actually can show something on them, because they're bigger than 60x60 pixels.

Here you have some actual footage of my coming along in Mario Paint :P NESVideos Logo/ Animation Copy of art on canvas, expressionism Can't really consider it WIPs, since it's not in a movie-making stage, just painted it when I had the urge to. Once support for mouse input recording is given in snes9x or zsnes I'd try to do a speed-painting movie.. someone on the IRC-channel (I think it was XKeeper (?).. can't remember) gave a preview of a possible title. Imagine: "Added [497] SNES Mario Paint (EU) - Mona Lisa by xxx in 0:37 (avi,fcm)" :D

That's actually a good idea, to re-make some famous painting. Maybe even add some NES elements into it, like making Mona Lisa be holding a NES pad or something... Of course this would hardly count as a speedrun, but it would be nice to see anyway. If someone wanted to "improve" it, he/she would need to make a better painting faster.

Although that's a really neat idea, I doubt that I have the artistic skills it'd take to accomplish something like that. Drawing a replica of the Mona Lisa in Mario Paint is a daunting task by itself already, not even speaking of any creative variations! So far I'd probably just go with (tool-assisted) speed-drawing a well known art classic.

1 - create a palette in your favorite image editing program that resembles the mario paint one 2 - crop the work area to match the same amount of pixels in mario paint's work area 3 - paste something (let's say, mona lisa) to this and use it as a guide.

Here are a few totally different images (following those steps) that could theoretically be exactly reproduced in mario paint: chocobo mona lisa the scream (or another version) It would be a huge pain to draw anything like that though, you'd probably want a program to do it...

I can't believe you used Munch's Cry as an example, as it was exactly the classic I wanted to mario-paintenize :P The only thing bothering me now is: With originals.. that we want to copy.. and using tools to have their colors match the Mario Paint palette.. and perhaps using a program to get it drawn - there's not a whole lot of actual skill involved anymore, is there? Besides the cleverness of using these tools of course.

Well, getting it drawn would take a lot of skill (or at least a lot more planning) if you want to draw it as fast as possible, taking into account the entire range of pen sizes and patterns and things that mario paint provides, and the fact that the standard pen tool can only draw in 2x2 blocks but you'd be drawing something that needs single-pixel accuracy in many places. I'm still not entirely sure what the goal of all this would be though, to quickly do something cool with every part of mario paint and combine it?

it's not just about skill, it's about entertainment. If you can surprise the viewer without much skill, do it. You don't have to end your movie after painting scream though. If you're still not bored after doing it, you can go ahead and change the painting into mona lisa, or just replace parts of the background until the screaming guy is standing in hyrule or something. Be creative.

I was thinking the same thing, but wouldn't that open a Pandora's box? Might as well TAS MS Paint...

Mario Paint has an undo function. Are you comparing Ctrl+Z to Undo Dog? :P

You dont want to use the in-game's or ms paint's undo function, you want to use the emulator's undo function because that doesn't get recorded in the video.

In 1.502, you don't have to do anything besides start using your mouse. In 1.43 (including "snes9x-improvement" series), you have to choose Enable Mouse in the Input menu and then press 7. After loading a game that uses the mouse, obviously.

There's some hacks of this game to emulate the mouse with the gamepad, I tried a few at random, and "Mario Paint (JU) [h6] (Joystick).smc" seems to work fine. So for as long as Snes9x doesn't record the mouse, I wonder if it's acceptable to use this hack? It'd actually be pretty cool to see the Mona Lisa or something painted very quickly. I'm not sure, but that hack seems to have a delay of about two frames for input; I don't know if this is true of the normal game, or it's a delay in the mouse-emulation.
