F-Zero is a Racing game of the future, with machines that reach more than 470 km/h top-speed
This movie shows a World Record timeattack of Mute City 1.
It costed me extremely much time and nerves to test many different driving lines and find the fastest one.
The lap times are:
25"41 (starting from 0 km/h without booster)
23"19 (to reach this time I had to sacrifice some speed)
23"21 (the result of the speed-disadvantage but got a very good speed for the 4th lap)
23"17 (this time was only possible because of the very good speed-advantage of 3rd lap, caused speed-disadvantage for 5th lap though)
23"19 (the most optimized lap even with speed-disadvantage)
Total Time: 1'58"17
World Record Times of Mute City 1 (skill based):
Total: 1'58"41 (0"24 sec slower than this time)
Fastest Starting Lap: 25"42 (0"01 sec slower)
1-Boost Lap: 23"22 (0"05 sec slower)
Did a nice hard-turn at the end without changing the final time
For those who want to continue the World-Record breaking are welcome to use this movie further so hopefully we can once get a full movie with World Records for all courses.
Yes, the record is incredible. But the movie doesn't look very interesting. It does exactly what one expects -- driving at maximum possible speed in straightest lines possible, cutting corners from the smallest possible distance.

playing white land I would be incredible because of the ramp shortcut, one of the biggest and most daring jumps in the game. Nothing "oh espetacular and unexpected" but its the best i think the game can offer for a TAS.
I played F-zero for years and never discovered this shortcut jump. I only found the one in Port Town that was not allowed (the pit stop thing would carry your car backwards after you made the jump).
<Swordless> Go hug a tree, you vegetarian (I bet you really are one)
Hmm, I believe I've tested every possible shortcut when I beat this game on my SNES (I wish I had a PC with Snes9x on it back then, heh), but it was, like, 12 or 13 years ago, so I don't remember a thing. :\
Still, I would be happy to see a TAS on this game, though I admit this is extremely difficult work. I fear, 100000+ rerecords is a bare minimum…
adding another 'meh' as I'm one of those guys that's not enough into the game to enjoy the movie.
Tending towards no because it's just a video of an arbitrary part of the game, not a game completion. Should fit right into the 'Hacked games / concept demos' section though, so I'll keep it a 'meh'.
edit:
What happened to your SM RBO-Run? Care to post a small update to the metroid thread?
edit: whoops, reading post dates can be helpful at times. I'd still like to see an update ;)
I also voted yes... but I wish I'd voted meh. My problem with it is that it's not complete. I liked the movie, (mostly because it's f-zero and f-zero rules all) but calling a single track a movie is like calling a handful of peas a meal.
I think a grand prix on the hardest league/class, particularly if just the final lap of each race were comparable to a world record, and the rest of the race is full of malarkey and shinannigans. :)
Okay, so this is the submission edited the longest time ago. Whatever, it's being judged. Be a nice boy and state you opinion for the record. I'll get to the takaboukenhashimeijimajin soon enough.
The main problem I have with this submission is the fact that it only plays one level. Sure it's very hard to get optimal times for games like this, and completing all tracks would be a huge task... but if this movie gets published, another movie, that plays also 1 (other) track of this game should also be published. There are other movies on this site which have been huge tasks aswell... so I'm kinda hoping there will be a movie which completes the entire game.

basically ditto. If this gets published, a full run would have to as well, and then we would have two movies which seems unecessary.
Reject in favor of a full version
The Excite Bike movie previously only played one track, and was later obsoleted by a full run. That's something to consider.
I'm not sure I would consider this movie more interesting if it played all tracks, but I'm probably not the best reference. I had never ever seen F-Zero before this submission (which is strange because it seems to be very famous).
The vote results are really lousy so far, too. I think the safe path is to reject this one and wait for a full run, but it seems unfair that someone would put his soul into that and still be met with "just not entertaining" when it's finished (like this was).
I'm babbling, the question is:
Do we really want a full run?

I love f-zero and i can call myself a good player. I can't match the world records even for some seconds of difference, and still, this wasn't entertaining to me. I'm still in the belief that a F-Zero run should focus on showing major shortcuts, and for that you must choose the track well.
I think this is better compared to Phil's Top Gear run. He chose to play 1 track which seems to be the best option.
About F-Zero I vote for making a run of White Land I. That track has a nice shortcut that can be used to show off as well as cut time.
Of course it's out of question that this one should be replaced by a full run when one is actually done.
Althought White Land 1 would probably be more entertaining to watch I picked Mute City 1 simply because it's the most popular track in this game which if I'm not mistaken has by far the most WR attempts and therefor a very solid WR time (on console). This was the only reason I picked this track because I wanted to break this solid time and make a good TAS WR-time.
I would suggest to accept this movie (because it's actually extremely high quality which took me more than a week to reach) as long as there is no full run and just obsolete it when one is done.
But I'm also ok if it gets rejected anyway.

bah, your right. It also occurs to me that the first mike tyson's punchout movie was a tyson only run that was later obsoleted by a full version.
Do we really want a full run?
As counter-intuitive as it may seem, I would be less bored by a full run than this 2-minute one. At least then I could see the cool shortcuts that Foda mentioned, and see some variety in the tracks. I'm also giving the benefit of the doubt that this is one of the more "tame" tracks and that others would have more to offer.

From my experience the track/opponent/etc that has the most competition with console WR's is typically the EASIEST (hence more competition and closer to the theoretical limit) therefore the poorest choice for a TAS.

Yeah, I've seen all the WR videos, and MC1 is by far the most optimized, with the exception maybe of Death Wind 1. Beating the WR's will be much easier on other tracks than it was for MC1.
There must be a "not" missing here...

In any case, I think this submission will be rejected, based on the big amount of negative feedback it has received.
I still think Saturn (or anyone else who wants to try) deserves to know if a full run would be met with more positive criticism (good quality being presumed) than this, because it's not something you whip up over-night.

It may have received negative feedback, but it does indeed have more yes votes than no or meh combined.
The first lap is a little surprising, what with the squeezing between the dirt and barrier, while the second - fifth are practically the same.
While I myself haven't voted on this, I personally think that this would fit well under the 'concept demos' category, as a full tas for this game would be a massive undertaking.
>It may have received negative feedback, but it does indeed have more yes votes than no or meh combined.
So does a lot of other movies that were rejected. I think almost 50% no/meh is very high, even 25% is high.
I'm going to wait for a while and see if everyone gets mighty upset, otherwise I'll go ahead and put my decision into effect.
I see no reason why it shouldn't be published. The main complaints are:
1) It's boring
2) It's not a complete run.
3) It looks "sloppy."
1) It's two and a half minutes long. I don't see how anybody can get bored in that short a time span. It also has tricks that'll impress the newcomer (such as the oft mentioned between the rail and the sand), and also some minor optimizations that'll impress the F-Zero run/speedrunner (the contact with the walls, some of the odd lines, etc.)
2) I don't see a full run happening for many years. And there's already a single course from a racing game run (Top Gear.) (Though, that was a site wide competition, from what I understand.)
3) There are quite a few other movies that take damage to save time.

this doesn't impress me at all, it's the obvious
