When I began being on the internet around 1995 I figured, that I'd need a nickname for various purposes. But I couldn't come up with one.. things like Satan, Killer and such seemed too uninventive to me. So I watched tv and STOLE it :) On the NDR (Norddeutscher Rundfunk here in Germany) they showed a documentary about african tribes.. and the people were saying things like "Ugdu bagu, lakda bam bu, agopo!" while fixing up their hair or crunching magnok roots. So I have no clue what my name means really.. except that it's phonetically related to something africani tribal. I found out though, that coincidently in Greek "s' agopo" means "I love you". I thought that was really neat. ;)

nice topic :) well, all begun when i tried to create a character in Lineage 2 (a morpg game) then, i tried to call it angel, but it was already used ¬¬ so i remember the name of song of saber marionnete J called "Enrai" i liked the game, and i named teh char" then everyone start called me enrai (all people in game) because it was short and easy :P so, a few years ago, i changed my nick (the one that u google and give results, and i have used for a long long time) for this one. so that's all. :) btw enrai means "distant thunder"

Back when I started playing Subspace (1998) I was on a 28k8 modem connection. After playing for a couple of weeks and receiving all manner of complaints about lag, I decided to take it one step further and name myself after it. Now I'm Lag.Com or LagDotCom just about everywhere, except Subspace where I lost the password to my name, where I'm just TildeStar.

Have had many nicks, and I wont stop making new ones either... though I like them all the same. Some of those: Terranovix - Years ago. From the words Terra and Nova and then just bending it a little. Though the game Terranigma was the first inspiration. Endresult was good imo. Dropped it later though... because I like changing nicks. Aziere - Current. Thought up totally on my own by just saying random things and changing them slightly. Ended up with this after a day or so of thinking. I don't know if it means anything really. Just seen that it's a fairly uncommon french surname. Duckblur - Current. Completely stolen from Ducktales. Spoken in the lyrics of the opening. Not much to say, hehe. The one I like the most though. And luckily, seems no one else uses it. Also have had a few onetime nicks (well, a ton actually), and some that I came up with, but never used, because I simply didn't feel like it anymore.

Probably not, but I'll keep it in mind as a possibility.

I have played Diablo2 for a couple of years now with my friends. We used to call the game "Bablo". Then the word got stuck in my head and I made a character called Bablo, and ever since i have used that nick, or nicks like bab, babluba, babloo, bablobob etc. Funny thing is, there are millions of Finnish Bablo's. Bablo doesn't even mean anything in Finnish. There is a sucky Finnish singer called Bablo though. I know Bablo means money in Russian, and beanhorse in Hungarian language.

I wonder if 'Bablo' means Washbear in any language.

Not that it contradicts with what you said, but the Greek word "agape" also means love. Though not your garden commodity of love that leads a couple to the bed, but the self-sacrificial love that makes one care about the others without asking for something in return. I just thought you might be confusing with this word.

one of the oldest nick here (1990), if not the oldest. back then, video games were mostly adapted from arcade, and they required you to enter 3 letters in the hall of fame, after the game over screen. I was quite young and had no imagination. the myth says that I overheard a "Soda Extra Large" order in a fast-food. but it could be anything you want. yeah, even the crappy ones, I'm quite sure some of you have many ideas, I'd gladly hear the original ones.

>I know Bablo means money in Russian, ... The standard word for money is dengi (деньги), I couldn't find bablo in my dictionary (it's possible that I missed one of those cursed soft signs, of course). Are you sure? Is it a slang word?

It amuses me that myself and SXL basically got our nicknames in the same way. X just must sound cool as the middle letter!

I'll bite. Back in 96~99 or so I went by JHL (my innitials) on EFnet. Around '99, I ran a bot for a friend on DALnet, and named it JoeBot. One day, the bot lost it's nick, I reset it, came back a few days later and noticed I typed it as HoeBot. Good o'l pal of mine says "I dear you to keep that," and now here I am -- Hoe. Though I do often prefer "JLennox," I just so happened to of made my name here Hoe.

I just read through the full thread because I have nothing better to do and I almost never check out the off topic forum. But I'd like to say I always thought Bisqwit was named after bisquick baking mix. And now for my story: This is the only site I use this nick on. I made it soley for this forum. I mostly like lurking and reading about movie progress, so I just wanted to come up with something so I could see what posts were new. It was just sort of the first thing that came to mind. It's insult with a z.

Around 1992, my best friend and I decided we needed nicknames. We started calling each other by our names reversed. Eventually we settled on one part we liked best. My nickname became Puhtron, from my last name, and his became Nitram, from his middle name. As time went on, I became bored with Puhtron, and when I began online gaming, (1995 or 1996) I changed it to Puhtronium714 (I was rather obsessed with nuclear reactions, and wanted to make my name into an element 3 times as radioactive as Uranium 238). By 1999, I'd realized that name was idiotic, (and also that atomic mass is not the same thing as radioactivity), and I'd stopped gaming online much, mostly just hanging out in Napster anime chatrooms. So I settled into the relatively anonymous "Otaku714". When I started hanging out on IRC, I was quick to realize that Otaku714 wasn't going to cut it as a permanent nickname. After a very brief return to Puhtron, I made a new name, by swapping letter pairs. Puhtron Pu -> Up, ht -> th, ro -> or, n -> n Upthorn. I later abandoned that nickname for The_Cowch for a couple of years due to a sociopathic internet stalker, but eventually he went away. To this day, I am known as Otaku714, Upthorn, and The Cowch, depending on who you ask.

Well, my previous nickname was --- <censored>. I was slightly hinted that the name might not have good connotations in someone's mind, so I had to choose a new one. (The old name, which shall remain a secret to everybody, is now used by someone else btw.)
Perhaps it is Hoe?
