Do you remember this one? Remember the commercial? Abadox...it's totally gross!! I'm making a playaround video similar to the ones of the gradius games, the only rules i've set for myself are - shoot nothing except the blue birds (powerups) - only take the powerups for speed (below i'll explain why i don't collect better guns) - do the bosses as fast as possible, make the rest fun to watch. anyway i did level 1-1 so far. actually i did it twice, i wasn't quite satisfied with the first version and scrapped it. this is not my first speedrun, but it's the first that i might actually submit here. i don't collect the better guns because they have a lower rate of fire, and it's impossible to turbo spam a boss if you have to wait for all the other spread shots to leave the screen first. yes, this game is as hard as they say, i've gotten to level 2-1 playing it on an emulator for dreamcast anyway hope you enjoy it. i used fceu-0.98.15-rerecording and almost the entire thing is frame advance with a few parts where i used 3% or 6% speed and one part where i used 1% speed. the rom is quite common, i reccomend you give it a try because it's actually a really cool game with good graphics sound and very good controls, it's just tougher than 8 bitches on a bitch boat. http://www.crookedstep.com/abadox.fcm

Wow. I've been waiting for this one to get done. About the guns - that is true about the spreader, but with the others like the rings or the laser where it's only one BIG powerful shot you can spam those quite easily. Actually, that's how I beat the last boss, I just got point blank with a laser and turbo and blew the snot out of it!

don't you have to cycle through all the rest of the crap first? finished level 1-2 btw. i'll upload it tomorrow. it came off really well although i was going crazy at a few parts, and scrapped the boss battle a few times.

I've updated the movie to include worlds 1-2 and 2-1 in each level i'm grabbing the speed upgrade so you'll see even more insane movements. in level 2-1 in particular, i start to show off that when you get this fast, you can pass almost all the way through certain things. also the 2-1 boss is the first battle i didn't totally scrap and re-do, although i used an assload of rerecords. the download link remains the same http://www.crookedstep.com/abadox.fcm

Yeah the first version of level 1-1 i did had me randomly shooting others, and randomly not shooting others. i decided that it looked like crap and i should either shoot everything or nothing. and this is one hell of an nes game, even with a shitload of enemies and projectiles on the screen, there's no slowdown! some flicker, but not really all that noticable in playback. I tell you though, the game is tough even in frame advance haha. glad you're enjoying the WIP. I got partially through level 2-2 last night, I'll put that up once the level is done also, I found out you don't have to cycle through weapons to get to the laser or circle beam, but despite that you can't turbo nearly as fast as you can with the regular gun. not that you can TRULY turbo in this game, you can't shoot on every other frame. actually the framerate in this game is quite low, which is probably why there's no slowdown and the graphics can be so detailed. Though you'll see i use the crap framerame to my advantage many times, by putting the guy in a position that would normally kill him, but ducking out of it before the game realizes he's there. with each speed upgrade, it gets easier to do.

True, the firing rate isn't as fast, but the power of at least the laser should off set that....that is of course if you even want to pick it up!

Just saying this now, so I won't get reactions later for not having said this earlier (and yes, I did watch the wip): Abadox (imo) isn't a suitable game for a TAS.

nah, by the time the animation of the guy shooting the laser is done with you could have shot the regular gun enough times to have done more damage

I don't think Final Fantasy 6 is a suitable game for a TAS either, so i didn't download it :P

I think that this is one of those ones that if you played it as a kid or have memories of that you will like it. Otherwise you won't really like this one.

Hey, just watched the run, nice job so far. How many speed upgrades are there in the whole game? And does each one speed you up or is there a limit?

as far as i know, each one speeds you up. there's one in each level, and in the very last level (the escape level after the last boss) there's a whole lot of them, becuase the screen scrolls very fast

So you should be moving quite fast by the time you get to the exit...so fast................

yep! i got everything up to level 3-1 finished now http://www.crookedstep.com/abadox.fcm the 3-1 boss was a real bitch to TAS, since some shots had the habit of going right through him. you have to really look close to see the "missed" shots cuz there's so many on the screen. it's fast as hell though, and overall i'm very satisfied with how it looks, it's just that was a really painful part to get through! luckily MOST of the boss sprite doesn't hurt you, and i was able to glitch through a few of his shots, but most of them i had to weave through.

Hmmm...I could see 2 or 3 that went right through mr shark boss. Would it be too hard to just stop shooting for a little until you can hit him again? It looked like just a couple of frames at best.... Otherwise pretty good! The speed ups are starting to get fun!

Nice! Although incredibly frustrating if you die, it was a favorite game of mine from the rental place. The music is really good. Enjoyed the WIP, keep up the work.

the only problem with that is the weird way the firing works, you have to press fire on TWO frames to shoot, so if i was to stop shooting when he mysteriously lets shots pass through him, i would have to wait a frame and then hold fire for two frames. for a game that only lets you fire every 4 frames, that's fairly significant, since the boss battles are the only parts that are done for raw speed. so i figured letting 2 or 3 shots go through him (i think it was 3 total) puts it in a position where instead of saying "why did he stop firing?" a viewer is more wondering "why did the shot not connect?" it puts the blame more on the game. btw i can now get up to that stage (level 3-1) while playing it on my dreamcast! before i started TASing this game, i couldn't get past level 2-1!

http://www.crookedstep.com/abadox.fcm Stage 3-2 is done, and looks really sweet comments on the boss... - the shot i shoot at the beginning that seems to be "wasted" actually activates him. if i don't shoot him like that, he'll never open up - you'll notice i kill the red blood cells, one at the beginning before he opens up and others that get in my way as i'm spamming him. not shooting them would make the battle a lot longer. i had to manipulate them to go in front of me instead of hitting me from behind - this is the weirdest boss, sometimes you can get VERY close and spam him, but at other times if you get close, your shots will do no damage. so if it seems like i could have been closer, it's becusae of that weirdness. - this boss only takes damage once every 4th frame as opposed to every 3 frames, which is unusual.

Holy crap it's been a long ass time since i've updated this http://www.crookedstep.com/abadox.fcm levels 4-1 and 4-2 are done the 4-1 boss is insanely easy, seriously. normally he crawls upwads and turns around but i manipulated him to stay at the bottom of the screen, which honestly didn't take that much effort. easy! in 4-2 my initial plan was to take the right path and switch to left when i could, so that both would be used (faster path to the boss on the left) however the right path was too easy so i used the left one the entire way the 4-2 boss was weird, i was about to tear my hear out figuring out how to TAS this guy (this is why it took so long to update) basically sometimes i'd shoot him and he'd take damage, other times he wouldn't. it seemed completely arbitrary. i eventually figured it out. when the eyball bulges out completely, he becomes vulnerable, so i would try to have my shot hit him on the 1st frame that the eye bulges, however he would not take damage. turns out that shots won't help him unless you start shooting AFTER he becomes vulnerable. shots that were fired before he's vulnerable will have no effect, even if they hit him while he's vulnerable. to add to that, if you start turbo or have any shots on the screen, you won't be able to hurt him at all. for this reason i had to hold off on firing until the 1st frame he was vulnerable. the position i'm in for that battle serves 2 purposes (which is why i don't move) the first is that i'm right up close to him so that the above explained oddity won't slow the battle down much. the 2nd is that everything misses me, even though the shots from the left seem to touch me and his lasers go right through me, for some reason if i stay in that EXACT spot, i'm invincible. so you're damn right i took advantage of that fact!
