• Uses FCEU 0.98.15
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Abuses programming errors to save time
  • Takes damage to save time

This is a 703 frame (11.7 seconds) improvement on Josh the FunkDOC's run. Contrary to what I anticipated when I started work on this, faster boss battles account for 58% of the time saved. With the exception of a few shortcuts in 3-2 most of the levels won't look significantly changed, partly because this game requires much more precise timing than its predecessor to kill stuff without slowing down.
Like I already said, more than half of the time saved was in boss fights and the majority of that in the final trifecta. This was done by using less power in the first two fights so I could throw fire in the third (special attacks really tear through the head since they don't get absorbed and I actually get off two fire wheels into the body of thefinal boss before it's possible to damage it with the sword) and super-fast attack animation cancelling in the first fight (which I abuse in every boss fight with ledges, most effectively in Act VI).

Summary of where time was saved
Title Screen: 6 frames
Act I: 17 frames; Boss: 18 frames
Act II: 13 frames; Boss: 0 frames
Act III: 110 frames; Boss: 7 frames
Act IV: 50 frames; Boss: 11 frames
Act V: 37 frames; Boss: 4 frames
Act VI: 23 frames; Boss: 36 frames
Act VII: 43 frames; Boss 1: 20 frames; Boss 2: 2 frames slower; Boss 3: 314 frames

You have my deepest respect scumtron. This is Grade A TASing. Obvious yes vote. I will rate this run with AT LEAST a 9 in entertainment & technical quality.

Reading this makes it all seem worth it. I'll just have to try to not let it inflate my ego too much :) Though I have to admit I was a little sloppy in not removing input that had no effect on the game... wonder if anyone notices. One question: picking up the bonus point bags... good, bad or nobody cares?

Wowie wow wow! You completely own this game. You float through this game like a nonchalant butterfly ;) Kickass run, voting yes. Now, will the Ninja Gaiden holiness complete the last game of this series and be the undisputed Ninja Gaiden King? ^_^ Edit: This game has the best music (especially the train stage) for all Ninja Gaiden NES games and about the bonus bags, what does your heart tell you? :) (you decide).

nonchalant butterfly... I love it. About NG3... I'm not touching it until I feel I can bring something new to the run and/or until I think I can improve it by more than 3 seconds; I don't want to do it just to put my name on it... also, i need to get a damn job already.

Agreed. Though I think it sounds the best with the winamp nsf plugin i use... EDIT: Bleep!. It's been way too long since I played on an NES to know which is most accurate though.

Obviously I've already decided :) I'm just curious about what other people think.

One of my favorite TASs gets a substantial improvement. Today is a good day. Why don't the ninja shadows flip when the jump? It's just not fair :( Edit: 7-2 was REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEdiculous!! / awesome

Holy shit!! I didn't think so much awesome ninja goodness could fit in such a short time. So sweet and smooth, just like a ninja should be. About NG3, I would speculate that your ninja powers may exceed mine enough to shave a few frames on some levels and boss fights. But as you mentioned, it will take more (like a new glitch) to get more than a second or two overall. I didn't do much luck manipulation, though it doesn't seem to be possible in many cases. If you can get moving platforms to line up at the right time it would be a pretty big deal, but good luck.

Incredible, just incredible. The dance you did at frames 32*** had totally cracked me up, I couldn't help laughing until the final scene ended!

I don't think I'll watch this, I think I'll just wait until you get the 4th version done.

Could you possibly be more awesome? You just made my day. The last bosses were like "Oh, hi there! Die now will ya?". Voted yes.

Ditto. And that sounds like the criteria for start movies.

Ninja Gaiden 2 was always my favorite TAS because of the shadow ninjas. Real time saver in the boss fights. I had to watch the old version to see how you could possibly have saved 314 frames in the final boss fight. The old fight seems positively slow by comparison! Well done. I also like the helicopter victory dance, and the moonwalking victory dance. Just an entertaining movie from beginning to end. Easy Yes vote.

Not noticeably or excessively, but let's not start that here.

If you don't use it noticeably or excessively, then you may as well not bother to use it at all.

Noticeable in the frame count, but not to the naked eye. I could show this movie to someone and they wouldn't be sure if was a TAS or not. It looks achievable by skill alone. That's what makes a great TAS. This movie is very entertaining, so I voted Yes.

hmz, -10 points for not being very consistent in your opinion with using left+right. Let me get this straight; it's ok if it's done only a few times? Or if it's not noticable for the viewer? What happened to:

? I see using left+right in a tas as something simular as using frame advance; it's an option an emulator provides to make a tas. Just like screwing open your controller at a normal speedrun, using a turbo controller is also banned at normal speedruns. I think, if a run looks like "not sure if it is a TAS of not", it shouldn't even be accepted to this site. Why would anyone want to watch a TAS of something when "It looks achievable by skill alone"? (Why not watch the normal speedrun then?) (Btw, I don't think this Ninja Gaiden 2 run looks achievable by skill alone.) I think a TAS should be aiming for perfection, aswell as entertainment. The more different a TAS looks from a normal speedrun, the more suitable it is for TASing.

Well said! Though I'd like to point out that hopper isn't being inconsistent with what he said earlier, and he has already acknowledged that the majority of viewers do not share his opinion.
