i'm new to the tas-stuff and i saw that there was no metroid 2 tas so i thought about making one. i actually started one before i checked the board here and found this thread... the two movies of Ferret and Zoizite are actually better performed than mine so i will rework mine i guess or just take theirs to start from. i planned on making a 100% run without using the select glitch. i don't know if i will continue, i just gotta make up my mind. maybe later

ok boys - i planned myself a route... its not perfect maybe and i haven't completely tried it out yet... also the last time i played through this game was ages ago. i'm currently trying to beat the game without time attacking nor recording to check if the route is possible. i've also got no real WIP because the "reference" movies from Ferret and Zoizite are just far better than mine as i mentioned in my last post, so i think it would be rather embarassing to post my previous attempt ^^ anyway, here's my planned route, based on >this map< (from the german metroid fanpage metroid-base.com) maybe some more experienced players can comment on this - feel also free to suggest different routes or other stuff.

1: the end
what i also need to know is, if the beam collection is crucial for a 100% run - i thought so till i got to the rooms 131-134 at my routeplanning and now i think the opposite. the "early" beams are still included in my route but maybe i can just skip them if they're not needed. i'm planning on "take damage to safe tame" so maybe checking by at an energy "ball" could actually safe me time if i do this right, thats why i wrote them down. it's actually very hard to use this technique (get hurt to safe time) because you're beeing knocked back in the direction you came from and not in the direction you look. also the invulnerability period is very short after getting damaged. i think the better use for taking damage is, that there is a bug when after beeing hit in mid-air, you can jump again so if there are enough enemies (or spikes etc.) you can pump yourself very high if done correctly (see room 45 where i planned on getting the spring ball before the other stuff) i really don't know if i'm getting at this tas because the planning took like hours and i didn't even move samus a bit there... with frame-per-frame movement, i see myself sitting at this for about a year or something :X i don't know if i got the guts to actually start this project... but anyway maybe if i don't, someone else will and can use my route planning ;) i'll see if i can make up my mind ps: i really enjoyed JXQs super metroid 100% run - kudos to him at this point, just awesome edit: updated route

Hmm, do you think Metroid 2 is the most difficult to navigate because the areas overlap? They probably had to stop doing that in later games in order to show the player the map coherently.

thanks, this map could help me a lot for the secret passages and with the earthquake stuff but anyway, i'll stick on planning with the other map because of the numbers ;) and i won't use the glitch. if you like the glitch, make a movie for yourself kthx :P

ok i finished the game today... there is no item counter, only a timer :/ so there is no visual proof, that it is a 100% run. :( also i found out, that there are actually six collactable energy tanks in the game, but the game is only designed for five - so if you collect the sixth, it won't do a thing >_> (except filling your energy up) that's kinda stupid

A 100% run with secret worlds abundance would merely be a half an hour of garbage filled screens. Could be useful for a "quick" any%, but a big no-no in 100%. Zar[ShAngO], have you seen carlmmii's single-segment 100% speedrun? It's pretty decent and can help in route planning if you still feel the route you've come up with is inoptimal. Wish you luck on this run, and be sure to optimize it up to boot. ;)

Yeah, that map isn't that great with some features but with this one I think you can see the actual paths and which metroid is which better...

yeah, i'm actually using both maps to plan :) btw: here is something said about a "spider throw technique"... i'll check on this one and maybe this could also give me a lot of time-saving can't watch the single segment run atm because i'm currently behind a modem connection >_< which would take me hours to download a 100+mb file

Why not? Not enough time lately to devote to it? :(

i'm doing project based work and when i've got a break between two projects , i could do something maybe. but while on a project i've got not got much time for extra stuff, you know. and in the little time between projects, i'd rather play some new stuff than making old stuff look better. maybe it's just my attitude (considering this rather work than fun) :)

yesterday, i 'tried' a little bit and it took me about 2 hours to do roughly 3800 frames... and i haven't even fought the first metroid. considering this movie will have maybe 100k+ frames (i actually don't know how to calculate this), this will take A LOT of time i think i'll do the first metroid anyway and post a WIP here as soon as i get home today ;/

Well, don't be discouraged too soon. 3800 frames in two hours isn't even a bad result per se. Normally, such games can take months to finish. BTW, the final movie length should get somewhere around 150000+ frames. If you'll work on it for ~2 hours every day, you'll finish it in two month or so for sure.

Did you ever see Ferret Warlord's WIP? He seemed to be having some good stuff going on in this one.

It would also make it MUCH harder to plan. :\

i said this before and i will again: definately not. it's a too major bug for me to exploit this. i feel this would be cheating and i have an attitude against "cheaters". and before you get at it, there is a difference for me between "exploiting the game mechanics" and "exploiting bugs".

The game mechanics include bugs, so exploit them!

This one is really ugly, y'know. ;) However, seeing both glitched and unglitched runs is the option I'd choose.
