I might as well start this section of the forum going with this first topic, and Super Mario Bros. is a pretty popular game that I'm sure some people will want to talk about. I'll start out by mentioning that Bisqwit added Yy's SMB speed run of the whole game (with an amazingly low re-record count of only 136!) to the NES videos page. In this topic, feel free to discuss strategies for the levels, ask how or why something is done in any of the videos, or just say anything else you want to about this game. In case anyone else attempts an SMB speed run video, these were my completion times for each level, so you'll have something to compare yourself to. If you have trouble reaching any of the times while making the video, I can explain how to do certains hard parts of levels, because even if you saw the video, it's easy to miss some things, and some parts are pretty hard to do perfectly (such as getting to the vine in 4-2). 1-1: 370 1-2: 346 (warp) 4-1: 340 4-2: 358 (warp) 8-1: 200 8-2: 342 8-3: 242 (avoid fireworks) 8-4: 314 (wall jump to floating pipe and alternate pipe glitch)

What's your trick for the wall climb glitch... I try as hard as I can and it's working about a 1/200 time lol

You need to hit just the right spot on the wall and jump at just the right time. Since Famtasia only shows 20 fps, it might not let you jump at the right time, so sometimes autofire can be helpful, but then you need to turn off autofire immediately after you jump or you won't jump high enough.

interesting, I'll attempt this game tomorrow night. Working together like this on the games helps us reach perfection faster.

I'm pretty sure perfection has already been reached in Super Mario Bros.

yeah, just attempted it right now on virtuanes, I matched your time. I don't see any room for improvement, but it was still fun to play though. My video is here: smb_by_deviance.

For you there is. I see you only got 313 instead of 314 in 8-4.

I have made my first video today... I tried on Mario Bros 1 and I made a 5.14 run in order to be familiar with famtasia... I don't know if I will do a really good video one day, but I think I'll try it... http://membres.lycos.fr/aylith/hpbimg/Time%20Attack/Mario1_Mr.D-5.14.fmv

Do a 2-player version of it and it might become :) (Yes, it is really hard and time consuming)

What you are talking about by saying "two-player video"... the two players play alternatively on this game so I just don't see the interest of that thing...

I did 244 on world 8-3 I made it on the European version, so it plays too fast on Famtasia and I didn't play as perfect as possible four others stages (even if I can replay the 8-4)... The problem is that I don't know why I have got this time because I can't make it another time on US version at all... here is the run: http://membres.lycos.fr/aylith/hpbimg/Time%20Attack/SMB1(E)_Mr.D-4.26.fmv

you've answered your own question, the european version plays faster so thats why you got 244 on 8-3.
...I can't make it another time on US version at all...
I don't understand, you mean you can't duplicate 244 on the united states version?

I also got 244 on another version of the game, but in the version I used for the speed run video, the fastest possible time is 243, so I got 242 instead to avoid the fireworks.

PAL version plays faster only because Famtasia works with NTSC format... the time units are usually the same but apparently, certain stage can be faster... finally perfection has been reached... too bad...

Not only. The european SMB is faster anyway. Famtasia only adds more speed on top of that. When I first saw the USA Super Mario Bros ages ago on a pirate 51-on-1 multicart, I thought it's slow because it's a pirate cart. I had no idea the USA version is slower than the European version by default.

I started a new speed run today for Super Mario Bros. I don't think I can improve any levels by any time units, but I can improve the actual time. I think 5:07 might be possible. My new speed run will feature even more precise timing, will look much cooler, and if possible I'll try to get more points. I just finished 1-1 and it's already a few tenths of a second faster than my previous version.

I just finished 1-2 and so far the video is exactly 21 frames faster than the previous version. Edit: 4-1 obviously can't be improved. 4-2 is probably improveable. 8-1 and 8-2 probably not. 8-3, I'll see if I can time the ending better and get closer to 243. 8-4 is probably improveable.

Are you using the 60 FPS Famtasia patch? I think if you're counting improvements in frames it might be nice to be able to use every frame as an action rather than every 3rd frame.
someone is out there who will like you. take off your mask so they can find you faster. I support the new Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun.

I checked your 5:08 run and noticed that it has 18477 frames. You need to improve your time by 57 frames to make it 5:07. I really hope and believe that you can make it.

How can you check how many frames faster something is? Do you have to have a copy of each run, then stop the movie at the exact same frame?

ok. I take my words back. It seems that famtasia rounds the frames to the nearest second so you only have to improve your run by 28 frames to make it 307 seconds and 29 frames.

Something struck me. In Crazy God Technique, the player uses the pipe instead of vine to get to the warp zone. I'm guessing that normally the pipe doesn't lead there and it's some kind of "next room"-variable bug. What controls the behaviour of this bug? Is it enough to make the vine appear, or does it happen when Mario grabs it? I have been unable to reproduce it. The reason I'm asking is because when it's done in CGT, Mario starts in the warp zone standing - there is no time lost for waiting for the vine to appear, or climbing up it. This could improve time by one or two seconds, given that it's enough with making the vine appear. What do you think?

I don't think it saves any time. I don't know the exact technique but it is almost same as to warp from 1-2 to minus-world. You have to get ahead of the center of the screen ( ahead of where mario normally is). In 1-2 you can make it with that jump trick on the pipe and in CGT it was made with vine.
