Is this a test run or a real run? To me it looks like slowdown has been used throughout the entirety of the movie and 2079 re-records for roughly 25 mins of sonic action is way to few since it should be much closer to 20,000 re-records and the visual imperfections show there is no need to go anytwhere near frame advance to spot the mistakes. This doesn't seem that much better than my test run of Sonic 1. Although in his defence bobxp is probally more skillful at 2D sonic in real time compared to me hence has produced a better run than me compared to my test run which entirely used slowdown altering between speeds of 3 to 10%. Aside all that I would still reluctantly vote yes since there is a lot of Kick ass Super Sonic action, but beware this run will probally be obsoleted by 2 mins in the future if anyone chooses to do this monsterous task.

The errors during normal gameplay are unnoticeable because there's a lot of kickass optimization, but the bonus levels could really use some work. The most notable I can think of after watching all that is the last bonus level done in the first act of the second zone. when there are 4 left and they are all splaced out with bumpers. you can can land before the second one, and turn on it, and jump to the third one twice, and turn again to the 4th. So I agree with aka that frame advance could have been used more often. Time is also wastd collecting more rings than necessary after becoming super sonic, like in the two zone 4 acts (or is that second tv really necessary). ice cap act 1 was great :)

hmm nice video but i watched SprintGods video and youve wasted several frames in most places and some places havent been Optimized properly i noticed in one of the loops you didnt do a loop jump thus wasted frames and you also dont do that glitch that SprintGod does in Marble Garden Zone where he warps elsewhere hmm im tempted to do a S3&K run myself ive even noticed some wasted frames in SprintGods run but im to lazy to make a run myself ^_^ Anyway good luck on your run.

I think that link may have been down due to server upgrades, Owen (my webhost) told me he was going to install a new server recently. Anyway...

This is a test run mainly. It's definately not going to be submitted - I'll optimize it for speed when (if) this run is finished.

Yea, I've been informed of many of those as well. As said above, nothing already done will be changed until this run is finished.

As mentioned above: this is a test run. I collect so many rings so that I wouldn't have to redo a lot of the act if I ran out.
you also dont do that glitch that SprintGod does in Marble Garden Zone where he warps elsewhere
I'm not sure what you are referring to here... Edit: Completed LBZ1. This was the easiest act so far. Same link: http://invhost.com/share/s3k_bobxp_9.gmv

sweet. comments: (I know you aren't redoing it now but I'll go ahead anyway) [0:23] why go up the ramp and jump backwards into the spin cup after the elevator [0:31] Nice! [0:56] Is that faster than jumping and holding right? Or just holding down? [boss] is that way of beating it really faster than hopping onto the boxes up there? Is it even possible to hop up there with super sonic? (I know it is with the electric shield or hyper sonic)

I couldn't jump before. Though, I should have just slowed down instead. Meh, minor thing.
[0:31] Nice!
Yea, I really liked that myself too. :P

Jumping and holding right would have been faster. Thanks for the tip.

I can't get on top of the boxes with Super Sonic. However, there's a checkpoint right before the boss, to get to a bonus stage. If I use that to transform back to normal Sonic and somehow get a lightning shield, I can do what Sprintgod did in that boss. But I don't know if it will save time overall. By the way, I would need to have between 35 and 49 rings to get to the magnet tower stage, which is the fastest to exit.

Hey. Just thought I'd let you know that you miss a giant ring in Hydrocity act 1. Gamefaqs has a good guide which has the locations of every giant ring in S3&K, and instructions on getting to most of them.

I know about both Giant Rings in HCZ1. But you can't get to both of them on the same run through the zone, AFAIK.

I'm pretty sure I've managed it before (with savestates, but no slowdown).

I'm sure you can get to them both, I just don't think it'd be worth your while to do so.

Here's a demo of the route I just made. This isn't the route I used before, but it's probably faster. (Note, this uses the S3K level select code to get to Hydrocity Zone act 1) http://upthorn.mspencer.net/temp/HC1RouteS3K.gmv

Interesting. I'll go improve that run and see if it would make it faster. There is a stupidly long wait in HCZ2 for the last Giant Ring, so it's worth a try. Edit: I improved your run by 18 seconds. http://invhost.com/share/hc.gmv That version of HCZ1 is only 1 second longer than the one I already have in my run. The time spent getting the last Giant Ring is around 10 seconds. I'll definately be using this new route in my run. :)

That is sweet. I didn't know it was possible to jump from the geyser. I hope hex-editing that in doesn't cause later desyncs.

SprintGod found out you could do that. I only found out when I read the page on his S3&K run, which was only a few days ago. I'm not going to hex edit it in, I'm going to start over, once this test run is finished. Launch Base 2 is killing me - SG completed it in 1:11, and I can't do it in 1:48 with Super Sonic. *sigh*

Don't go for the first giant ring. Sprintgod's route takes you right by 4 super ring monitors, and gathers 39 rings besides. if you follow his route, just stopping to grab one or two of those 10 ringers, you should be able to beat his time because of Super Sonic. By the way, are you planning on collecting the super emeralds? You really should. It's possible to do as sonic by the end of Mushroom Hill Zone, and it'd be annoying if the "Collects All Emeralds" run... didn't.

I agree with you there, but is this run an all emeralds or a super sonic run? I'd prefer all emeralds, but it's up to the author to decide imo.

It would seem kind of inconsistent to collect the Chaos Emeralds but not the Super Emeralds.

I was never able to get the super emeralds although I was able to do it on the original sonic and knuckles cartridge. What do the super emeralds do anyway. Is it to face that Robotnik thing that flies in the sky with the emerald. Sort of like Moon Zone in Sonic Advance. I would prefer if they were collected, but that bobxp's decision and not mine. Edit are you definitley going to continue towards the very end of the game. It would be a mamoth task to collect 14 emeralds through a game that double the size of Sonic 2 and thats both in terms of stages and length, I wonder if that can be done in under an hour. If you want you could always treat it like a real run starting from the mushroom hill and then simply simply start another movie and hex edit in the stuff from Mushroom Hill afterwards its just an idea do what you want.

Whats Hyper sonic? Is he like twice the speed and double the jumping distance of super sonic (my that does sound scary). Didn't Spint say that there were specific shortcuts and glitches that could only be done with Super or Hyper Sonic. I remember playing as super knuckles and he was just plain awful.

Bob, what ROM are you using? I've tried using 7-8 ROM's and it desyncs after a few seconds or freezes. Edit: Problem solved. I tried all the J, U, JUE and whatnot expect for the W version :)

Whats Hyper sonic?
Hyper Sonic is faster than Super Sonic by the same ratio as Super Sonic is faster than Sonic, he can jump higher than Super Sonic, again, by about the same amount that super sonic can jump higher than sonic. And Hyper Sonic can jump once in mid-air. Aimed. He can jump Up (like the electric shield, but a full second jump height.), Forward (Like the fire shield, but loses no altitude for a full jump height-distance), Backwards, or Down (Like the water shield, but faster, and none of that annoying bouncing) Also, when hyper sonic double jumps, all enemies on screen are destroyed in a flash of white. Additionally, double-jumping will automatically enter any star rings above lamp posts. (Saving a couple of rings if you need to transform back quickly) Additionally, Hyper Sonic is visibly different from Super Sonic, he cycles through all the colors of the chaos emeralds, has spikier hair, is surrounded by stars, and is trailed by up to 3 afterimages.

You just need to have Super Sonic to be able to play Doomsday. Thats all I had on my first play through, god knows how many years ago, but I still went to that final zone. I believe Hyper is faster in doomsday thanks to a dash move, though I have not played it with only Super for ages, so he may have the ability also. Plus, on the list of what Hyper can do that Super can not do, add breathe underwater. Also it should be noted that Super Sonic can not be used after visiting the first Special Stage from Mushroom hill onwards. You have to unlock Hyper before you can transform in normal levels again.

Which is why I note that there are 8 giant rings accessible as sonic in Mushroom Hill zone 1+2, with no death required to get all of them in one go This is enough to get hyper sonic on the first robotnik, even if you don't collect any other rings.

I can get Super Sonic easily. Maybe I should just try watching his run again, to see what he did.

I am indeed. Hyper Sonic is extremely useful, and I'm sure there will be places in the S&K levels where having Super Sonic is worse than having a certain shield (after all, look at CNZ boss, ICZ boss, LBZ mid-boss...)

Of course I am. If SprintGod can complete the game in 45 minutes, then an all 14 emeralds run is definately possible in one hour. I probably won't achieve it on this test run, because every single act in this run is slower than SG's so far.

Wow!! That really helps! Do you have a map of both acts of MHZ? I only know of 3 Giant Rings in that zone.
