In any X-series speedrun, there should be two goals: 100% completion and pure speed. Because X1 and X2 reward 100% completion very visibly (well, that, and I know them very well) I thought I'd take a stab at running them sometime eventually. The problem is I don't know the best routes for -speed- in them. In X2, six of the eight main stages can be run naked - that is, everything in the stage can be collected, even if that stage was the first chosen after the intro stage. While this makes any 100% collection run simple, in that the order is largely undetermined, it makes a 100% run for speed harder to plan. Because you can get the Shouryuuken no matter how many of Zero's parts you recover, and fighting Zero takes less time than fighting all three Couter-Hunters, they can be skipped. For casual play, I use this route: Wire Hetimarl Wheel Alligates (much easier to get the Arm Part with Strike Chain than just with dash-wall jumping) Bubbly Crabolos (because Bubble Splash makes the Counter-Hunters easy..) Flame Stagger (again, Rushing Burner makes the Counter-Hunters easy) Cristar Mymine (not in weakness order because Crystal Hunter is needed for Metamor Mothmeanos's stage) Metamor Mothmeanos Magne Hyakulegger Sonic Ostreague While this makes the game pretty simple to run, it yields a time of over an hour (about 1:15 last I checked, but I don't usually play for speed so this can be improved quite a lot). I doubt it's the most efficient route. It may save time to go in weakness order and then return to Metamor Mothmeanos's stage after Cristar Mymine. The order above elimiates all backtracking, but Cristar Mymine takes a very, very long time to kill without Magnet Mine. Thoughts? Suggestions?

While working on C4 support, I played MMX2 tons of times, but for some reason I'm drawing a few blanks :P Make sure you get the shoryuken, since you can kill the 3rd X Hunter in one hit, and both versions of Sigma in one or two hits each. I have videos of me doing that somewhere...

Yeah, I recently discovered this same order on my own, when I tried to work out a path to get all the items without having to revisit levels. Turns out the only snag was Crablos's sub-tank, which requires his own weapon to get. :p Actually, the "weakness-non-conforming" section in that order that can be rearranged without any item-collecting penalty. Instead of (Mymine, Mothmeanos, Hyakulegger), you can also go (Hyakulegger, Mymine, Mothmeanos) and still be able to get all the items in one trip. I personally prefer the latter since I find Hyakulegger easier than Mymine. He's still pretty time consuming though... :)

You can get Crablos's subtank without Bubble Splash. Stand on the land under where the tank is, on the level part, and walk (don't dash) to the left. When you reach the part that's tilted downward, jump, and you should jump higher than normal. snag the wall to the left, triangle hop up to the surface of the water, then use the surface of the water to jump continuousy over to the right, then hop out and collect the tank. Two neat glitches are exposed in it, but it's possible. Only the capsules in Ostreague's and Mothmeanos's levels and the heart in Mothmeanos's need items.

You have to make sure you kill Overdrive Ostrich before Wire Sponge, just to do that cool cut-in-half death that happens. I've always loved doing that! (I'm unsure of their Japanese names, sorry for referring to the US version's ones in this post.)

.................... GAAAAAAH!!!!!!! >_< I already knew about the slope glitch, and knew about jumping on the water's surface in X3 (found that out trying to figure out how to get to the Kangaroo armor...which, btw, is why I think it's intentionally programmed rather than a glitch), but never thought to try jumping on the water in X2, and so thought it impossible to get the rest of the way up the wall... I've been trying for months to find a way to get up there without the Bubble Splash, and never thought to try something that worked in the sequel. Go figure :p

Yeah, but that'd screw up the item sequence, as you need the Spin Wheel to get the stuff in Ostrich's level (X-Hunter door and dash boots). Can't do it the second time in the "boss rematch teleport room" level either, since the dragon punch is quickest. :(

Also, X = Mega Man (why did they do this?) Counter-Hunters = X-Hunters Irregular Hunters = Maverick Hunters Sagesse = Serges X1 had a fairly good translation. X2 absolutely did not.

one question why should 100% completion be necessary if youre going for speed? now, im thinking of this strictly from the Mega Man X1 point of view. i dont see how getting the armor/helmet/sub tanks/heart tanks yeild a better ending. for X1, you could fly thru the game in weakness order fine, assuming that you start with chill penguin for the leg part. i think in addition to pure speed, no damage taken should aldo be a part of it. i cant think of an area where you could/should take damage to save time, unless you were in one of the armored carriers so MEGA MAN didnt take damage. but still, if you did something like that, is that considered damage?

It shouldn't. That's why both 100% and minimalist runs should be done.

1. A significant amount of time can be saved by taking damage at strategic points. Specifically in Wheel Alligates' level right after you lose the Rabbit. 2. Rock doesn't appear in this game in any way. The main character is X. They are NOT the same.

That's the name of the Ride Armor in this game. Also, over the course of the game it may be benificial to take enough damage to store a Giga Crush, once the body upgrade is acquired. It eliminates the entire first stage of the final Serges fight rather quickly.

I am currently working on a time attack on MMX2. Im wondering which is the best way to take. The order for the robots is no problem. It's the X-hunters that is my problem. If I kill the X-hunters I can skip Zero. If I dont kill the X-hunters I will fight X-hunters and Zero later in the game. Currently I am skipping the X-hunters but I will do the run again to see what the fastest way is.. I read somewhere that if I skip all the powerups/Hearts/X-Hunters and so on there will be an secret/alternative ending with X and Zero that are racing on a highway. Dont know if it's true, but ill will find out. :) My route is currently Overdrive Ostrich Wire Sponge (CUTTING him into pieces) Wheel Gator Bubble Crab Flame Stag Morph Moth Magna Centipede Crystal Snail (Kicking him out of his hideout shell) And the time at the clock after killing all the robots without the X-hunters are 23:55 http://frenom.areta.org/fmv/megamanx2-frenom-ver1-u.zip My run so far. ..

I've done that myself on a real SNES (once, after umpteen tries at the final bosses...good god Siggy's tough with no powerups O_O), and can confirm that. The ending starts out normal, but as the view shifts to the other side of the screen, you see Zero dash by. Surprised me when I first saw it. Though I've heard recently (forget where) that you just need to skip all the armor parts. I suspect it also might just be default if you skip the X-Hunters and fight Zero at the end...I dunno. =P

very good frenom. i had only ever played this game 3 times and from what i saw on your run this looks to be a very cool run ^^ cant wait for the finished version. just 1 thing i noticed, is there any way to kill magna centipede (spelling?) any faster? the fight just seemed a little long. mabye if you shot the moth weapon (cant think of the name of it sorry) onto the ground so the shrapnel hits him just after he reforms? just a thought. but like i said, exellent. work.

I think both X2 and X3 would make good choices for 100% speed runs. I know the concept is to complete the game as fast as possible, but trying to get 100% in these games wouldn't take all that much longer, but would require some work in determining the fastest route for the least amount of stage revisits as possible. As always, good job guys. I'm looking forward to FFIII, SoM, and Crono Trigger too. If not enough people want to see it done, oh well I guess. I can understand why people wouldn't want to watch like 8 hour plus movies

Yeah, see this thread for the X2 progress. I've got a text file where I tried to map out the shortest path for 100% X3...it's around here somewhere...

Oh. My bad. I knew that thread was there too because now I remember seeing it. I guess I'm a little too drunk to be posting things on message boards. A moderator needs to go ahead and close this topic because I'm dumb.

Finally completed, hope you all enjoy it. Frenom, are you still working on a minimalist I was wondering?

Yes, and it is very good. Continued dashing/shooting/jump-sliding throughout. No moments that feel like they drag, and manages to get all the items while maintaining a continuous pace. Well done. (Of course, I'm not an experienced speedrun critic--I'm just an interested party.)
