I thought it was pretty creative to stop the movie in mid jump. The recent Monopoly entry showed the benefits of early stopping and that's basically standard, right? As for the minor errors, for time being, this should be regarded as the best movie to date for one reason - it's the fastest. If a movie with the exact same number of frames is submitted but collects 2 more coins, that should take precedence, but for now, IMO, a 5:04 or a 5:01 movie shouldn't be looked at as better than this one. Besides, with the 3 different authors all looking to make the best video, they will in the natural course of time all achieve the same time - then these little details should be looked at. However, we should all look at the strong possibility that this will be beaten shortly.

Nah - just tossin' some ideas out there. The first 15 seconds are Acmlm's. I'm sure these guys can re-create it. Just hope they'll get it down lower ;)

Isn't there a kintaro fatality with shang tsung? Doing this run will really put your art skills to the test - you'll need to pick the best and the baddest end moves (you have hundreds to choose from).

It crashes on me (always sometimes) when: - I hit f6 by mistake (the magic crash key) instead of f5 save or f7 reload (sausage fingers - a curse - had to change these keys) - I save or reload at a seriously low speed (6% or less) - I come out of frame by frame Dunno - I've gotten really good at making back-ups of everything. From experience with it, however, there are 2 types of crashing: 1) It freezes and goes straight to the pop-up "serious problem, needs to close or you'll explode" message - hope you made a back-up. 2) It freezes and the sound scrambles at about 500% volume - you have a couple of seconds to "stop movie" before getting the heart-attack message. If you get there fast enough (I play with my pinky on 'alt'), you can hang on to your progress. Then close and restart. I don't know what any of this means, but it's helped me along the way.

Greatest quote ever. Kinda like arguing over who drew the better picture on an etch-a-sketch. I wanna play. 0:36 (used your start settings)

I don't know why, but I really like this idea. One thing - would it save time to have the computer hit income tax on his first roll?

Kinda hard to keep up with what's going on or even who's who, but man it's fast :) - I'll go yes.

27 - 28 in a few months How come the best players were about...oh, I'd say about 0 when these games came out and I still struggle with Ninja Gaiden after 15 years? When I was your age, I had respect for our elders.

In that case, Mart's Ring King should also be accepted since it would be that fastest movie on the Site ;)
And remember, that's many many seconds longer than it could be to try to keep it interesting. He could have gotten 3 ring outs in a row and beaten the game in probably under a minute.

So, you're going after the bombs? Or was that your point of not going to Kraid's first.

Hmm - I played around with going to Kraid's lair first quite a bit, but it doesn't seem possible to get any missiles without having missiles. How can you get missiles to open Kraid's door in Kraid's Lair without any to begin with? There are only 4 missile tanks there and they are all deep beneath missile doors or bomb walls. I even played with the door glitch to try to get me lower towards the missile tanks, but failed. How is it possible to get missiles from Kraid's Lair without any going in there?

Try to look at it as if nobody had ever played the game, would they find the video entertaining. For example, even if you're only vaguely familiar with SMB3, Gradius, or Rygar, the runs are fantastic to watch because they pull off some insane manuevers.

Select your game well. Not all games have potential for entertaining movies. Select the one that give you the best chance to do something absolutely stunning... The better you follow these guidelines, the better the chance that people will enjoy your movie.
Sorry - it looks played to perfection, but... Perhaps if the game were hacked to "Where's Porno" or "Where's the millionaire Nintendo just made for watching this movie" it might work...well, perhaps not. I honestly think you did a good job with it, but Where's Waldo can't possibly make an entertaining movie - not your fault.

Whoa - someone actually OWNS mp3?? Does that mean that any artist that distributes music via mp3 has to pay said royalties? Or is that just for this codec?

Again, beautiful run. I'm glad it got finally pulled off with style. I'm kinda spent on ideas for the game. The only other possible run I could think of was a no-boss run (collecting only the ice beam, bombs, maru mari and 2 missile tanks), but that would be painstaking as hell and not too fun to watch (leaving mother brain's lair with every dead zeebetite to collect more missiles). But I suppose it's possible. As for Arc's run, it's basically flawless and I think incorporating UP+A to beat it should only be done by him before anyone tries something better using it - and even then, there's a serious question as to whether or not it's actually "better" than the current run posted. Even if he beats the frame count in every room, don't you guys think that might take away from the all-natural feel of the original. Right now, there are 3 runs of metroid: 1) SPEED Speed run - beat the game as fast as humanly possible. IMO, this is beating the game as skillfully and as fast as a player can within the realm of the game the way the creators intended. 2) FULL 100% run - beat the game and collect every item. This is more of a technical demonstration of the game than a skillful run through the game from beginning to end, although it shares some of the same attributes (speed, precision, etc) 3) MINIMALIST 1-item run - beat the game and only collect 1 item. This is by definition a technical demonstration, making it as difficult for the player as possible and still being able to finish the game, not to mention incorporating images that people have never seen (Tourian without the ice beam is pretty). If anything should be improved using UP+A, I think it should be the 100% run and not the speed run, but I think all 3 are just fine the way they are and the standards have been set. If anyone thinks the speed run should be done better, maybe they should find a new route before they say "oh, I can do this much faster using the reset." Oh - and I just found out the red rippers can be killed with about 200 hits with the regular beam. Absolutely nothing to do with anything, but it's exciting to me :)

Gotcha - so what you're saying is a movie won't desynch unless the restart save-state affected something in the movie that the power-on sequence doesn't. In that case, I think that's all the more reason for the patch to be a good idea. Might be good to test the movies here to see if they abuse this tactic. I'm probably making a mountain out of a mole-hill, but it's interesting. Do the other emulators have this concern?

Is there anything else you can do to manipulate the outcome of the blocks? Hitting buttons or the directional pad when the piece is in place might affect the outcome of the next piece. You did a phenomenal job placing the pieces, but the pausing does take away from the flow. OH - and I love that the puzzle games are getting some attention. Can't wait for someone to make Anticipation interesting.

But...wouldn't that make everything up until the patch unreadable after it came out?

They go for the "spirit of the game" thing. I would guess that the programmers put the up+a in for debugging. But it is weird that a site that doesn't show the videos doesn't allow the technique and a site that does show the videos does.

I think it has been covered that the up+A technique wasn't mentioned in the instruction booklet, but also it doesn't matter much because that's more of a Twin Galaxies rule for real time console runs. I wouldn't imagine that anyone has plans (including Arc) to take down the run using the reset because it's fine the way it is. Sure, someone could make a less quality run using the restart to beat the time posted, but Zoizite could have used it all over the place to improve the 100% run I'm sure. As for the run, do you think this would be faster using the restart sequence after leaving Kraid's? I think by the time you get to the top of the elevator, the game would have restarted, then you would have that small stretch to the first door to get you on top. I'm sure you thought you had used it enough already, but I'm just specualting.

Well the question is whether or not a player could have done what he has done with a hard reset. If the settings for the emulator powering on are equal to the settings using the restart sequence, there isn't a problem. This is a minor abuse of what should be a new rule, but it can be abused to enter passwords and settings before the game is started, and in some games, set the continue to the final level or boss. But can anyone think of a game where this isn't detectable visually? Off hand, I can't. I would vote to simply automatically disqualify any movie that abuses this minor tweak until a patch is made for a hard reset. Just making it illegal will prevent anyone from trying and I don't think it would be a problem. As for the video, it's way faster than me and it's a shame that I have to vote no ONLY because of this, especially since I accidentally discovered the abuse, but I hope you can hex edit it to keep it (not sure that's possible). But another question: if a patched version of FCEU was released that fixed this problem, would it be possible to detect then? Could you tell from the fcm whether a person was playing on the most recent version?
