Well, it turns out I don't remember the game as well as I thought, meaning I don't remember what dialog options I need to take to advance the plot, so I think I'm gonna do a casual playthrough in tandem with the TAS. Play casually to figure out what the bare minimum is, then TAS it. Probably do it on a per-mission basis. That Nicovideo WIP is pretty damn good, it'll be hard to match it. Would be nice if it had the opening of the game too for me to compare against. EDIT: And after searching Nicovideo, this user Yokutoku has full-game WIPs for both scenarios. They're both from 2013. I seem to be wholly outclassed. :(

Decided I'd give this a go. http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/65857000520473527 I figure even with battle scenes on this is going to be not too entertaining, so I went ahead and turned them off for this WIP.

Threads on the Workbench are showing a more recent "Author" date than they actually have. This thread: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22096 is listed in the topic list as having been created August 25th, 2020. The actual post reflects the correct date, August 18th.

There is a verification movie, he talks about it in the submission.

I haven't watched this movie, but my opinion on the attack manipulation: We allowed "Press R to die" in VVVVVV 2.0 despite the fact that it also was a dev tool that was inadvertently left in.

I've made this happen in casual debug mode foolery in Gens by stacking tons of monitors on top of each other, knocking all of them open with a slow roll, then using the debug restart. I doubt the Hydrocity foolery is the fastest way to actually trigger this.

"100%" would also get all 20 1-Ups. Sistermind's TAS from 2010 or so, which gocha linked above back around when I made this thread, does that in only about 32 minutes, and then takes about another 16 to do Area-Sp and beat Bowser a second time.

I took some time and watched the movie in emulator, fast forwarding though things that were familiar from the S+T any%...and I skipped the vast majority of the movie. I don't think we need another any% run like this. However, I DO think we need more any% runs that don't use zips or terrain-ejection glitches.

I think this run is fine to accept. You get to see a different Area-5 than in the Best Ending run, meaning it offers unique content, and it is an ending of a sort.

Best Ending "only" requires all 8 keys, but I believe access/progression to them is gated in such a way that you wind up needing all the upgrades anyway, EXCEPT Space Jump. (The area immediately after the SJ mushroom has on/off blocks that you can trigger before the SJ mushroom to get through.)

According to a friend of mine, Elite Fighters respawn infinitely, so theoretical max score is infinite points in infinite time. So a high score TAS would need subgoals to restrict that. My thought would be either "fastest time," or "does not visit beacons more than once."

What would a maximum score run look like, assuming you had fastest time as a secondary goal so as to mitigate grinding? Would you take easy-to-fight encounters or still just skip them?

The lack of actual gameplay (battles) makes it rather boring, but excellent technical achievement. Great for Vault.

Does anyone have experience with this? I want to mess around with libTAS but I don't have a spare machine to put Ubuntu on, and I've had bad results with dual-booting.

This is a fine enough movie for me. Area-5 is different from HappyLee's movie, and the route to get Space Jump and then deathwarp back to Area-1 to get to Area-5 and pipe glitch is interesting. I do agree with mklip about the 100% run being a bit tedious, so if I was making the judging decisions, my thoughts would be this movie, HappyLee's (no scroll glitch?) and then either All Upgrades or 100%.

This discussion reminded me of an idea that I think has been thrown in the past. Why hasn't anybody created a game that's quite directly based on TASing?
I remember seeing such a game posted on the forums in the past - I can't remember what the game was called, but the premise was that you had a 'car' with rockets on both ends, gave you a scrubbable timeline you could add/change inputs on arbitrarily, and it showed the predicted trajectory of your current inputs. It was called something like rctr ('rocket car').

I heard if you look into a mirror late at night and say "Linux" three times, Linus Torvalds comes out of the mirror and replaces your computer's OS with Gentoo.

I think this might a good time to revisit this judgment, if such a thing is feasible. The notoriety of the hack has gone up a lot in the last month or so, mostly from streamer Oatsngoats speedrunning the hack (albeit a slightly modified version to be more RTA-friendly.)

I saw your userfile where your description indicated surprise that Gens was faster. Most of the time this is only because gens has less lag than Bizhawk, but the Bizhawk core emulates better, so the lag is SUPPOSED to be there.

Be aware that gens's emulation of the Genesis is not as accurate as the Genesis core in BizHawk; this translates to gens runs seeming faster because there is less lag.

I have never been a fan of "let's shoot weapon containers and then not pick them up" in Contra series pacifist runs.

I don't think that we need to reject this solely for being on PAL, but I think it does mean that any attempt to obsolete it should use NTSC. My vote: Yes. Short movie, very to the point. I liked.

Selicre, I was specifically thinking of showing the camera boundary, but a gradient shading extending out from where the camera boundary is might work too. My concern with something like that is that it might make Tails's offscreen shenanigans hard to see.
