I'm pretty un-knowledgeable about Mario 64 TASing, but I'd like to throw my opinion into the ring regarding a 70-star run. IMO, a good 70-star run would collect the most entertaining 4 stars from each course (for a total of 60) and then 10 of the secret stars to make 70. I think this would be the best way to go about it because it maximizes the entertainment value over time. Of course, "entertainment" is hugely subjective, so maybe it would be a better idea to pick the quickest 4 stars and not subject the movie to a "speed/entertainment trade-off" debate.

I say to take Bit and Byte all the way out so we get to see Press Disposer, since he's not in the any% TAS. I'd also argue to not kill Vile so you get to fight him in Doppler 2. (Basically, I'm suggesting "do the opposite of what the any% did.")

I have JoyToKey already, but I haven't found any option in it to map buttons to analog input, and if I can skip the middleman, I'd prefer to. I'm just worried about screwing up my.cfg file. Also, thanks for the link. If I ever find a job, that'll be my first splurge purchase; I had been expecting to spend like $15 for a PS/2 keyboard at the local Staples.

I'm currently out of a keyboard on my computer, so I've been contemplating TASing solutions involving my PS2-to-USB adapter and Dualshock 2. One solution I came up with was to map savestate controls to the left analog stick and speed controls to the right stick, but the control mapper in SNES9x v1.43+ v17 won't let me do that. My question is, if I manually edit the bindings in snes9x.cfg to bindings that the control mapper won't let me do, will they still work, or do I need to find another solution for my TASing needs?

Watched, and I was very entertained. I'm not an expert on Megaman/Rockman TASing, but it looked reasonably well optimized, and certainly had enough "WTF!?" moments (like what he did to Killer Man's stage) to get me chuckling. Yes vote.

There's no rule against hacked games anymore; they're simply considered both as their own game, and also in relation to the game they were hacked from. I'll watch this tonight and vote tomorrow.

That sounds weird... why don't you just buy a new one? How could you even write this post if you don't have a keyboard?
I still live with my mom and stepdad, who don't let me use the Internet from my computer for various reasons which I have no desire to go into, so I use it from their computer and at the local library. As for why I don't just buy a new one, I've been out of work since July '08, so the only times I have money are at Christmas and my birthday (August) and those are generally spent within a month or two of the holiday in question.

I liked the commentary as well. First time I've watched one of janus's PSIV runs without fast-fowarding at all. And he seriously just brute-forced all the luck manipulation? Now I'm really impressed.

Right now, I have a Dualshock 2 wired to my computer with a PS2->USB converter. My thought is to map speed controls (pause/unpause emulator, frame advance, etc.) to the right analog stick (Z-axis and rotational Z-axis) and savestate controls to the left stick (X-axis for switching the current state, Y-axis for save and load.) I'm asking for input because I want to do some TASing, but I don't have a keyboard any more.

This situation is a fringe case, however. I'd say the usual rules and precedents may not apply.
What are you basing that on? As I mentioned, I'm not planning on watching this for a couple of reasons. Are there other (J)-specific timesavers I'm not aware of?

I believe that the general consensus here is that faster text is not a valid reason to use a (J) ROM over a (U) ROM; I have seen runs using (J) versions rejected for that reason. This would probably be worth publishing on the grounds that the current any% is way out of date, but I'm not a Judge, nor do I plan to watch this on the grounds that I never finished OoT and don't want any of it spoiled for me in case I ever get back to it.

In Super Mario World, it takes three frames from the frame Jump is pressed before Mario actually jumps.

+ and - control SNES9X's throttle, but frame advance is generally the way to go; it allows you to be far more precise than just slowing down the gameplay.

Yes, that is my suggestion. If it's the same one I'm thinking of, hitting enemies with both characters in rapid succession kills them much faster than just with one character.

There's a couple of Sailor Moon games on the SNES; do you mean the beat-'em-up? If so, one thing you should do is use two players; I remember playing it via ZSNES Netplay with a friend, and tag-teaming enemies significantly speeds up how fast they die.

I was reasonably entertained by your WIP, but if you were planning on submitting this, I'd suggest you add "fastest time" as a secondary goal and scrap the point-whoring like you did in Marble Zone 2.

I think that's the best way to watch RPG TASes, perhaps in combination with also slowing down for the storyline moments. I could have sworn I voted on this before, but apparently not. Yes vote for certain. I was mildly disappointed to not see Raja in the final battle using Ataraxia to refresh Chaz's TP for more uses of Shadwblade'd Tsu, but oh well.

Okay, I was gonna keep this a secret until I posted it myself, but my keyboard is out of commission, so I can't do any TASing until I either fix it or replace it (or figure out how to TAS with just a PS2 controller) so here you go. It's possible to 100% Stage 6 with the Explode weapon, and if you use Shadow mode and position your satellites right (so that they're inside the boss), you can take out the first two bosses in less than 10 seconds each. (By having the satellites inside the boss, all of the shrapnel from the Explode weapon will hit them, and your fire rate will be much faster. Against the first one, you'll probably have to take damage because you can't move. (Your satellites will follow you if you move, and they'll move off of him.) Against the final boss (the eagle thing) your best bet is to use Unison mode and fly inside him, taking damage to save time and so that all the shrapnel hits him from within.

Ran a test of Stage 3 with the Photon. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/721938050/boct1584%20-%20SuperEDF%20Hard%20-%20Stage%203%20Photon%20Test.smv The mid-boss is admittedly kind of slow, but since I get the Secret Bonus afterwords (meaning I didn't miss any enemies spawning) it can't have been that bad. Also consider how quickly the boss got shredded.

Level 2 done with the S. Laser. Kind of cheating to use a homing weapon, but it does very good damage. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/788223/boct1584%20-%20SuperEDF%20Hard%20-%20Stage%202%20S.Laser%20Test.smv If you don't mind using the same weapon multiple times, I think the Photon will be the weapon of choice in Stages 4, 5, and 6; rapidfiring it with the satellites in Homing mode took the final two bosses out in less than ten seconds each. No SMV of this yet because this was in a playthrough on ZSNES.
