if I recall correctly in chapter 5 taloon's abilities are increased via levelup (just like the goofoff in 3) so he wouldn't have access to the more powerfull abilities at low levels. as a side note one of his abilities steals the enemies drop item (doesn' work on king metal though) that could be manipulated to get some of the more powerfull items quickly

oh and on a side note, if you need more money once you get to ambrosia murder one of the priests, then beat on the guards that show up for awile (great exp) and you should be strong enough magicly to defeat them in one round (rot or death will do it)

wizards have repel clerics have undead as long as you have enough magic to get by monsters in the final palace the two mystic items aren't needed, but keep in mind if you run out of mp you won't be able to attack any monsters in the final palace and could get stuck (natuarlly easily avoidable in a speed run) also stuff like sands of time don't work in the final palace either, though you can use one right before you enter to help you for a short while (stop spell works fine though) I think i mentioned it earlier, but if yyou were really patient with luck manipulation you can make a ship appear on exodus island in just the right place so you can skip getting the mark of snake and the horn (you'll still need the 4 cards from ambrosia though) I had this happen once on the real console. basicly you need a pirate ship to spawn in the little river by castle exodus (one of the moon gates appears on exodus island next to the river. that would cut alot of time from the run leaving you only having to get : level 3/5 (never saw a ship at leve 3-4 myself) keys ship mark of force mark of fire (still potentially optional) buy intel/wis points lov son moon death cards

I finished metal gear 2 back in the day as well. it wasn't nearly as bad as the psx "fans" say. it had alot more stealth then the first one did, very little "run and gun" gameplay at all. the only real complaints I had were: 1.it wasn't as open ended as the first, once you were done in a section you moved onto a new area, with no backtracking alot of items could be missed this way. 2.snake looks silly red ;-) 3. some of the bosses were a little too dificult (the bosses on the boat come to mind. and hey its the only game where you can be a 6 star general ;-)

i'm definatlly far more interested in the normal game (tgl is really boring) but it does give you a chance to practice on the shooter stages to find the best way to go through them.

I'd like to see two runs for this one. the tgl version (put in the password TGL and you only will play through the shooter stages) you get set powerups at the end of each level, and its much harder (limited powerups) then the normal game once you get to the later stages. normal mode. a few glitches I know of if you rapidly pause when buying items you can buy more then one item provided you have enough chips (you normally can only buy one item in a shop) if you aproach a powerup from a diagonal you can pick it up repeatedly (very usefull for refilling your life/chips with a single blue chip. abusing the lightsaber weapons would be a must in said run. i'd be looking forward to it myself :-)

good luck... that game is tough, you'd need the prize world password as wellm I never could get past the first few areas..it might make a very interesting run considering the dificulty. as a side note I picked up a hong kong pirate copy of it a few months ago, I never did check if the prize world was in it;-)

a quick note. when you beat 5 the first time, your time becomes the new time to beat. so if you did 5 perfect the first time, your second time would be identical and i think that puts you in first again so you can just cycle level 5 forever. (either that or it makes you #2 and you can go on to the next track as long as you rate 1-3 soooo...the game just loops forever at that point.

you need to hit start on controller 2 actually there is a "Trick" to getting a higher score. spend alot of time in smb1, go to 3-2 or 3-1 and rack up massive amounts of points using the turtle stomp trick. this was done at the real nwc tournament (it got me to the semi finals till they "modified" the rules initialy you didn't have to play all 3 games, till that technique was found (I modified it a bit and went to 5-1 directly from 1-2) but by the offical rules you had to finish rad racer AND place at least one block in tetris. still it would be a very interesting run to see (especially if the better time attackers competed to get the best possible score (with following the rules and using the same time limit)

it wouldn't be too bad if you could manipulate alot more missle items (fires a straight path through bombable walls) if you find special pools in some levels , all your aquired items are doubled that could be used to make things more barable. medals seem pretty hard to come by, manipulating those will help get megaton bombs in the shops easier (i think t hey cost 50 each)

actually this game did have a password system...sorta if you hold ab + select and press start on the title screen (some simple combination like that) you get a password entry screen of course...theres only one password that works... fluxcapacitoristhepower this will let you play the third game from the beginning (the third game was originaly to be released seperately but I think they figured it wasn't going to sell so they just stuck em together) but I liked this game back then, the lack of saving/normal passwords was completely assinine though and nearly destroyed the game. with emulation its a pretty decent game (yay for save states) many of the puzzles are pretty clever on a solomon's key/lolo scale., bouncing between the 3 time zones + using the vines and other secrets is fun if you give the game a chance. (i've never come close to beating it either)

what that glitch does is uses previous "erased" save game data when you do that trick. it doesn't work nearly as well on an emualtor you also can't beat the game with the glitch party the best way to do it on a real cart btw is to remove the battery from your cart for about a day to get a totally fresh save ram on it. (yes you can bring back erased saved charecters with it) its a fun glitch to play with though :-)

a solo run would keep the random encounters shorter the less people in your party, the less monsters will attack in a group. (pre-determined battles in dungeons are the same though) Paladin is definatly your best choice. you can buy as many regeants as you want in buceaneer's den from the blind shopkeeper for 1 gp for 99 (he sells manroot), if you do that early on you can just fix your virtue later and not worry about regeants the whole game (other then fungus)

malroth is suceptable to chance's confusion and sleep effects so theres a good chance you can beat him that way (thats how I was able to beat him the first time)

I personaly hated 4 for a simple reason. chapter 1-4 were very nice and well done, 4 great independent stories. chapter 1 was kinda a nod to dw1 chapter 2 was a nod to dw2 chapter 3 was a unique experience with being a merchant (even spawned its own series) chapter 4 was a push for dragon warrior storylines chapter 5, was complete and total BS. it starts out great... once you get your first "old" companion is where it totally falls apart.. YOU CAN'T CONTROL ANY OF YOUR CHARECTERS IN BATTLE OTHER THEN THE HERO!!! that completely and totally drained the fun out of the game. this was done in every dragon warrior since, and totally killed the series for me. (to note, there is a gg code to regain control of the other charecters...but I didn't know about that code as a kid..so my feelings on an "unpatched" dw4 are still the same)

I played through ng3 today (jap version) and its a very easy game overall, lots of room for tricks and decent moves however it may be impossible or close to it ..to beat the game without dying.. level 7 doesn't give you enough time to beat all the areas in one life. I was able to get to the last section with 16 seconds left ;-) your milage may vary of course. (it was my first time through to be honest)

speed runs might be interesting for the 4 first chapters as each is esentially a stand alone adventure each can be completed fairly quickly. leveling up would be a slowdown, but with well timed critical hits and misses it could be done fairly quickly and interesting. chapter 5 might be overkill, even if you fought king metals for leveling up quickly i'd suggest doing a ragnar run and see how it comes out after a few tries.

a small overlooked point. rotating the peices affects what pieces will drop later (see my post in the tetris thread) so that adds like a billion other variables since every spin changes the chances of whatever piece will drop in the future

things absoultly needed to beat the game: pray (to get silver horn and for the final event) silver horn (to get by the snake level 5 (to get a pirate ship cards (lov sol moon death) mark of force snake (you can get away with not getting force but 3 of your charecters will die in the final palace) you CAN via a little known glitch sneak into the final castle without the horn or mark of snake. with luck manipulation you can do it i'm sure one of the time gates go to the final island on the side of the river. if you manipuate luck just right you can have a pirate ship spawn in just the right spot. this happened to me once in the years i've played it (I promptly died in the final area and lost the ship sadly) my suggestion would be like this: cleric wizard wizard wizard (if you want to get the force mark otherwise its really up to you but make sure you have a charecter who can use cleric and wizard spells to level up to 5 quick) level up to 5 (manipulate fights as to always fight 8 undead for 32exp per fight) go to yew, get pray(lots of fire panels, may need to use heal carefully again manipuatling the rsults as to get more hp per use) get a ship, go in whirlpool get the 4 cards in ambrosia die (fastest way to get back to lord british) manipulate luck to get on the final island (pirate ship trick) with carefull dodging you CAN avoid all the dragons in the last castle a good trick is to go to your status screen right before a dragon touches you when you return your 4 charecters will be on one tile and you can avoid many attacks) defeating the invisible tiles will be a trick since you're at such a low level with minimal spells, but thats the only really tough fight, and again you can just manipulate luck to not die here. use cards (love sun moon death) get the ankh get the hell out of there :-) your toughest challenge is beating the two pirate ships (manipulate luck to get the least amount of pirates on each ship, possibly buying a few ands of time would help drasticly) defeating the "floors" will be tough too since you can't stop time here again manipulating misses and hits will help, might want a fighter charecter or maybe a ranger just for these few fights since you won't be spending much (if any) time in dungeons so no magic is needed really edit1: I tottally forgot, you can't fight in the final palace without the silver weapon, might want to use more wizards and use thier lower level missle/flame spells to defeat the floors edit2: note all of this is from memory.. I beleive there might be two spots in the final palace where the force barriers are in your way..so the trick of having 4 people run across them and having one survive isn't going to cut it. what i'd suggest is to get the 4 cards on ambrosia, get a flower give it to sherry, then go to the closest dungeon with the mark of force, desend/sink to it ,grab it fast and use the compass heart to get out fast, then continue with my little walk through :-) (since you won't have enough mp to rise back out or cast surface the heart is the best bet...my memory on the dungeons is a bit hazy, might want to check maps and see the easiest force mark to pick up .

I'm pretty sure its just a bad dump of the game. I'll see what I can do to get mine dumped one of these days.

to prevent the final boss from getting healed, cure him then physical attack him then cure and you won't have that problem.
