I'm doing a game which will roughly consist of 1 1/2 hours of cutscenes, so don't worry about that. There was a topic started for this, with lots of people offering huge amounts of ideas/strategies. Plus, many have said that they've played this, it was mentioned at the beginning of the N64 TAS wishlist, we have other RPGs on the site, and this game has many sequels due to its popularity. Go for it!

Haha- ouch. bkDJ: greatest "LONG" WIP ever. I was able to run the entire run today (I never could before) and it did desynch at the start of Jabu Jabu. I have the WIP vid to see progress after that until the master sowrd was pulled, but it'd still be nice to see everything you do from now until publication.

I was suggesting Spiderman and the X-men as a superior game to TAS, but since this topic is Separation... this game has 2 player mode if I'm not mistaken.

This is not true, the emulator is just more capable of playing the game than the real console. The programmers actually changed the game to make it run faster so that the slower framerate in multiplayer did not translate into slower gameplay. I believe you can overcome this issue on a real console by overclocking it somehow hehe. Anyway, imperfect emulation has never stopped TASers before. I think you can limit the fps if necessary anyway.
Trust me on this one. It runs WAY too fast in 2 player GP mode in mupen. having played this in GP many times, I know that on the colsole the speed difference between 1P GP and 2GP is not existent. in the emulator, 1P GP runs perfectly fine, and at perfect speed. in 2P mode, it runs TWICE as fast as normal, and not to compensate. That's an interesting glitch with shells... But I still think boosting over another player is superior, for speedrunning.

many people have stated how Spiderman and the X-men in Arcade's Revenge still stands as the most TASable Spiderman SNES game of all... but prove us wrong! I think this one is 2-player as well, so you should look into that.

Rainbow six I toyed around with; not as fast paced/action as PD will be, but has a lot of clever use of CPUs. Neon Genesis I don't know so much about. I highly advocate trying this to the fullest, and if the first level really is not working the way you want it to, the rest of the game is FARRRRRR too precious to be ignored; so get it as close as you can, in a successful manner.

once you have the emulator and ROM, you can configure the keys in mupen to your likings. also highly suggested is downloading Nitsuja's TAS Input Plugin. once you have those, load the ROM, and wait for the game intro to play out a little. then go to utilities, movie, and star movie recording. (crt shift r.) browse for the folder you want your .m64 to be in, and make a new .m64 file with the desired name, and select it. fill in the autho/description info, select starts from reset, then hit ok. If the ROM in the emulator reloads, and starts from the very beginning, you did it right. If it starts recording from that spot in the intro that you stopped at, try again. it is very important for the ROM to reload every time you replay the movie file. Good luck! if the results are good, I might download the ROM myself and take part in reviewing your work.

Okay, watching the latest in WIPage. My notes/questions: I liked the music/switching weapons during the running parts. Good way to fill in the time. The Floyd shooting down the waves of flyers while on the run is just COOL! I always wanted to do that in real-time. The closest I ever got was I once hit them with a perfect Tri-Rocket... Was that Homing ammo at about 5:55 really neccesary? It really wouldn't make too much of a difference if you skipped it really, but I guess when attempting something like this, you want to get every segment perfect as possible. At the firefight during 7:12 -7:30 why didn't Floyd shoot the snipers? True it was cool to see the homing missle kill 'em good, but would Floyd have been quicker? You do the same thing later on, but with a pistol this time. Again, could you have sniped the snipers with Floyd without having to stop, aim, shoot? At the fourth piston, is it possible to just run across and jump off then back on? Or would the piston just push you off anyways? Okay, that's all!
Homing missiles in the Cerulean Caverns: at this point, I only have a capacity of 5. so I'd blast them off until I had 0-2 left, and get a ammo box for it. the reason is that there are tri rocket upgrades, but no tri rocket ammo boxes, and I ran out of tri rocket ammo. the homing missiles are guaranteed one hit kills on the orange drones, and 1 homing missile+Floyd or 2 homing missiles kills the big guys. homing missiles going for the snipers: yes, it saved time. they were really far away, and actually did not spawn from where I was with Floyd's range. I noticed that a homing missile would just go over in that general direction and 70% of the time kill them both in one shot, whereas Floyd's shots have a tendency to not register when off screen, and usually did not hit the snipers. Plus, I thought to use the homing missiles here, since I wouldn't use them anywhere else in the level and had a full ammo box at the end. when I used the plasma pistol inside: yeah, meh. I'm not 100% sure if Floyd can reach that far. his crosshair is tied pretty close to the middle of the screen. at the fourth piston: no. the ones that I ran ahead and jumped when they pushed me off was because I was slowly being pushed off. The other pistons were unskippable, because they were going too fast.

102%: Redhot Ride, 97 frames saved. Just Sqauwk's Shaft, where I have a few ideas on where I can save time (maybe use Diddy the whole way through- something to test) then Kleaver's Kiln, then sit back patiently and wait for Arne to submit any% before I continue this.

don't you do the goron bomb boost outside the palace anyways to skip the whole thing? I thought I somewhere where the guy goron blasted onto the top of the archway where those two deku guards were. edit: oh wait, the trick you posted was skipping 90%. nvm. I wonder if being the goron is not needed...

Flume: Floyd is waterproof? ok, boring swimming level. But it's gotta be done. I let Floyd pick off some ants just for fun. Not too much in the way of saved time; straighter paths, straferunning, and always moving helped. Oh, and found a funny bug with turbo A/B, and made Vela glide into the area cleared doorway. On to: LUPUS!!! everyone's favorite JFG cyborg dog.

I made a handy 45 page word document which conveniently had all the useful information from these pages, namely the routes revised and technical info, plus other research that I did from this so called 'internet'. I have of course reviewed your 3 levels thus far. except for the part I already mentioned about skipping the intro faster (here is a short .m64 showing what I mean) the work you've done is great. again, sorry that I couldn't be a co-author to this... I really had to cut back on multitasking and focus on JFG. Best of luck! I will review everything that you do, and compare it to the easy WR's for comparison.

Yeah, boost and brake don't actually change the speed at which the level scrolls.
I just tested this and found that boosting does in fact decrease the amount of time it takes to reach the end of the level (by somewhere between 10 and 20 frames per boost).
so shouldn't boosts not be used?

I have all 4 SNES Spiderman games. I'd recommend Spiderman and the X-Men in Arcade's Revenge out of all of them, as IMO it's the most TASable, but for this one... be sure to use lots of variance in the beating up of opponents.

Ichor: Bile, blood of the gods. In JFG: A GOOEY MASSACRE haha hey. sorry for Ichor taking a week. Once I sat down and actually started, it came along pretty fast. So Tawfret castle was a massacre. SS Anubis/Sekhmet were nice shortcuts that drastically recuded the in-game time compared to marshmallow. This is a combination of both. Vela absolutely loooooovesssss her tri rockets. It's just my luck that a) practically all drones in this level are shielded b) there's a lot of tri rocket ammo boxes so yeah. one word for this stage: explosive. I think I made two tiny mistakes, where I take 3 steps back in order to homing missile explode two sniper drones, but it was because of the angle they were at. the other was I think I grabbed a tri rocket ammo box when I had like 15+ tri rockets. at the time I thought I was low and didn't know when the next one was coming. right off the bat we have drones dying to the lovely tri rockets. we have more ants dying to tri rockets. then we get inside and there's more ants dying to tri rockets. we skip some tribals, tri rocket some ants, save a huge amount of time here and there from being fast, tri rocket some more ants, go past the the room with the moving platforms and buttons, tri rocket some more ants, found a great way to get past some of the platforms that push me off the edge, tri rocket some MORE ants, then face the boss. Ok, the boss. you have to go to video settings, and select frame buffer (experimental) otherwise you won't see the fight. this boss was weird, in that on the final hit the boss flew around for maybe 10 seconds before registering a death. Floyd was on because in those ten seconds I was expecting it to die, and was going to have Floyd help in shooting, but apparently my last tri rocket blast did the trick. Floyd did help in the first phase though; he helped destroy two of the laser arms earlier than intended. I hope you enjoy! form here it's either selecting Lupus and going to spawnship, or Vela for Mizar's palace; both take the same amount of frames to choose, so it's personal preference. zdk1, I think I'm going to need... lessee... Vela's Flume/Mizar's Palace, Spawnship, Rith Essa, and Eschebone. Danke. DeHackEd: maybe AVI of Cerulean + Ichor?

yeah but then there's a tradeoff of co-op vs. not... which is, trudging bowser to finish, because I don't think the second player can 'retire'. so while Toad would get first place in record times, Bowser would have to, for BB and RR where he serves as a boost to Toad, get into position, and wait for Toad to do his thing. only when Toad gets that thing done for the final lap can Bowser move, at which point he is likely way behind the other CPU's. a single player can probably do GP 150cc special cup: -do DK in 30ish seconds, by going backwards and doing the cave thing to skip all the laps -in Yoshi's Valley, again go backwards and lakitu skip over the fence, another easy win. -in BB, no co-op boosts so normally go through it, driving through the course as fast as possible unless a lakitu skip is found -in RR, same thing; go around the course as fast as possible. a co-op can: -in DK, do the same thing, but have Bowser and Toad do the cave glitch thingy so they get 1st/2nd place -in Yoshi's Valley, do the same thing; Bowser+Toad get 1st and 2nd -in BB, use Bowser to launch Toad through the level; toad gets first and redicolous time, abd Bowser has to trudge along after 3rd power jump to finish 8th -in RR, same as BB if only mupen had a soft reset feature, it'd be nicer to play all 16 courses in GP 150cc, in order to show all of the shortcuts possible. of course, the single player/co-op tradeoff would be present again. so it's basically down to: use Bowser to boost two levels to make Toad get faster time, but real time to make the levels last longer, or single player to get fastest real time run. also, is one person even capable of driving two karts around, especially one optimally and one to set up as a boost? speaking of mupen, Mario Kart 64 seems to run weird in mupen... with glide64, everybody's invisible. with gln64, everything is screwed to crap. with Jabo's, everything runs fine just... a little too fast. at least in co-op, so I'm guessing that it's going to have to be single player ANYWAYS since co-op runs too fast to be considered normal play.

Hm... also, the special cup happens to contain 3 out of 4 stages where you skip laps (DK behind in the cave, Yoshi's Valley over the fence, Rainbow Road a co-op skip) and Boo's walkway which has a nice co-op skip, but not as quick as a lap skip like the other 3. would audiences really be entertained by merely skipping 3 out of the 4 races with a shortcut that the TAS would make look easy, and get a time of roughly 30 seconds to a minute for those three stages?

I was more wondering about co-op strategies in GP... for a special cup 150cc race, or a full run (all cups, 16 races) would GP benefit more from single player or co-op? I'm downloading the vids to see what shortcuts there are...

For a 2 player GP, which two characters should be selected? one lightweight one heavyweight, but which two characters specifically? or should a 150cc GP be done 1 player? you could use the heavyweight to boost the lightweight into first place, and then try to limp along and get the heavyweight to finish as fast as possible, leaving #1 slot to the lightweight.

antd, from everything that I've seen done by you- your youtube videos and your fastest Fox work- you'd be the most eligible to make such a full run since: 1) you have a great knack for entertainment, as evident by the mini combo videos you make, which are amazing 2) you were planning to beat all the WR BtT and BtP, which such a full run could do 3) you have full experience TASing every character; I myself have only explored Kirby and for those interested, we have another SSB TASer in the mist; time will tell how good his work is.
