Having just watched the movie, I'd have to echo the response of Xkeeper. What?

Yes vote from me. :D I don't see the Japanese ROM being controversial at all. To steal a point I once saw someone else make, this is a TAS, there is no "skill" involved in avoiding damage here as opposed to a non-assisted speedrun.

Nice run, just a few minor things which others have already mentioned. I'd love to see a TAS of the backwards Sonic though, that'd be amazing. :D

It's because it was done by a different branch of Sega to the ones that made the other Sonic games, so the mechanics are different. Impressive improvement to the old run.

It's definitely possible to hop off the wall right beside the door, you can hang on the ceiling bit there. I don't know if you need extra width, or if you're far enough in to bypass the elctric fields further up. It just seems like the only other place the glitch can be used. About the first level, the existing run showed it's possible to clear the first section without stopping at all, shuriken bursts are good for eliminating enemies and you should neer jump kick onto someone because that throws you back a bit and wastes time. (Though there's a way if you kick them at the lowest part possible it avoids that, as the existing run also shows)

In level 6, the big room where you need to jump up boxes to get to the room, the wall on the right can be wall dodged off, and if combined with a jitsu of fushin, you can get to the exit much faster I believe. In Level 7, in the penultimate room where you need to wall dodge from side to side to get to the exit and fight the end boss, I was enquiring if the new glitch you discovered can be used to climb up through the left wall as that would be much quicker than wall dodging all the time. I don't know if it's possible, I was just asking if it was. It'd require a healthy amount of shurikens to do though. I don't see how a jitsu will make Zeed quicker though, neither of the two damaging jitsus affect him, and the lightning shield isn't needed because this is a TAS. (Unless I'm missing something) Ok I watched the run. I don't know if you're trying for optimal performance or not, but for example in the first level, you ducked to slash an enemy, which wastes time. In the previous movie, he was using shuriken bursts to take them out so he didn't have to duck or stop and kill people. The goal is to get to the end of the level with as few stops as possible. I mean the first part of the first level looks slower to me than the existing run. :( I'm not sure where the jitsu you saved against the second boss could be used really. They obviously save most time when used against bosses who have long invincibility periods, otherwise spamming powered up shurikens is the best. What I said about the water ski jump kick method for faster shuriken spamming actually works on foot as well, I just tried it myself. So that's another potential time saver, perhaps against the first boss of the 5th level among other places. I can't think of many other places that could be abused unfortunately as most bosses have a few frames of invincibility after being hit. Oh and the way you broke the lift in level 2 was amazing, made a forced scroll segment MUCH more interesting to watch. Nice one. :D

Well in case anyone attempts this, a bunch of improvements over the existing movie are: Second part of the first level - Just before the first canyon jump there's a short stutter which can be avoided. First level end boss - Not running after him will cause him to appear on screen much quicker. Second Level - Definitely possible to get three hits on the yellow ninja before he disappears off the left of the screen. Third Level - Just before picking up the Ninjitsu, he does a double jump into the wall which is unnecessary. A single jump into the wall will still require two wall jumps to get over, and it's very close to being only a single wall jump needed, a single one may be possible with optimal positioning. Fourth Level - When on the waterski, it's possible to throw a shriken, jump, kick diagonally downwards and throw another shuriken far quicker than simply throwing shurikens without doing anything, definitely abusable against the mini boss and the end level boss. Fifth Level - The new glitch will speed up the level significantly. At the first boss, ducking and hitting with the sword is faster than standing. Any boxes with dynamite can be detonated faster with a jump kick or shuriken than simply walking over them. Dragon boss could be tidied up with sword swipes only when necessary than repeated slashes that look like button mashing. Sixth Level - I think doing a wall dodge off the red wall on the right in the big room can be used to get to the door quicker at some points. If a jitsu of Fushin is going to be used, using it a room earlier would seem to be quicker as it allows you to finish that room quicker. Seventh Level - In the third section it's possible to eliminate all 3 fans in a row with a shuriken burst with the proper positionining. Is it also possible on the final wall climbing section to use this new glitch to jump up through the wall? And that's all just looking through without slowing down, looking at luck manipulation or where a few frames can be saved here and there through better play.

I can't vote, but imo it isn't THAT nauseating, especially when it's such an improvement on the previous run. I've also never seen anything on the Iago fight except 3,4,2,2.

Yeah, you're the only one who I've seen do this too. Time constraints prevent me from taking a shot at this unfortunately, it's about the one game I would attempt a TAS of, but I can lend some advice with routes and strategies if you wanted to give it a go. =)

You should do it. :D In all seriousness, I've watched the existing run many times, and read the comments/thread about it, and like others have said, some bits of the run are just blah. =/ Not to knock the work that went into it, and I'm certainly no TAS expert, but just from having played the game in real time so much, the run looked so iffy in parts. And what made it worse were some parts of the run were extremely well done, like the luck manipulation on the dragon-type boss. The good bits only made the iffy bits look that much worse. The glitch you found would naturally speed up the 5th level quite significantly.

I had to register to comment that I'm amazed that glitch has been undiscovered for so long, and nice job on finding it. I'm sure you'll also have spotted the many places where the existing run could be tidied up as well if you've played the game as much as I have, so I won't bother pointing them out. I hope you're able to get a full run done for this game, because it certainly deserves a high quality run.
