This movie is a synchronized compilation of various independent parts. Each part consists of an act and his author is displayed in player column.
Glitching improvements:
  • Green Hill 2 - The strategy of getting inside the wall after bouncing off the bee was performed before by nfq. Zipping from the wall to the goal was discovered later by Upthorn.
  • Marble 1 (*) - There is a glitch in each entrance to the castle in marble zone. On the first act AKA made it useful and the level could be completed in 15 seconds. It requires a bit of sub pixel positioning to get off screen jump to work. This glitch enables traveling from almost the beginning to the end of the act.
  • Marble 2 (*) - There is a hidden way to cross a wall that involves many seconds. To perform the glitch hit the monitor making it fall down, then get under it and Sonic will be pushed inside the wall. It seems a bit complicated but it can be done in real time easily with some practice.
  • Marble 3 (*) - The main marble zone glitch can be also performed in this act. This time Carretero showed how to use it to reduce the time significantly.
  • Laberynt 2 (*) - Can't imagine how nobody discovered the glitch used here before. It is a very easy glitch that can also be used in Laberynt 3 (not useful there).
  • Starlight 3 - Upthorn made better optimization of slope roll and slope jumping that allows for some sick speeds here.
  • Scrap Brain 1 - The basics of this glitch involve ducking on the platform to enter the wall. Once inside, pressing left will blast sonic to the right at a ridiculous velocity the screen can't hope to match. Because Sonic is going so fast, he can pass through certain walls / obstacles. By the time the screen finds Sonic, he has already ran through an area that normally would require a lot of pausing, due to fire and crushers.
  • Scrap Brain 2 - ChaosControl showed an ingenious glitch that helped to beat this level.
  • Scrap Brain 3 (*) - In this act there is a quick way to go directly to the end; the glitch could not be in a better place. Once lodged into the wall, hold left and sonic becomes absorbed like in quicksand.
(*) All marked improvements are the result of some never-seen-before glitches. They were discovered by Carretero playing Sonic the Hedgehog backwards. The hack Sonic1 - Return to the Origin shows this unexplored direction.
Especial thanks to JXQ who promoted TASing Sonic the Hedgehog by publising the first complete movie. Thanks to Carretero, Upthorn, AKA and ChaosControl for contributing to this art.
Enjoy.

NesVideoAgent: Hi! I am a robot. I took a few screenshots of this movie and placed them here. I'm not sure I got the right ROM though. (I tried Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (J) [!].gen, which was the closest match to what you wrote.) Well, here goes! Feel free to clean up the list.

Truncated: Rejected in favor of the even more awesome improvement. Please cancel your workbench movies when there is a faster one available.

I knew I was taking too long with my own Sonic 1 improvement, (it's only through LZ3, and it hasn't got the MZ3 improvement yet) but it's more optimized in a few places. For instance, my MZ2 time is 0:34 and 52 frames, and I saved another couple of frames in GHZ. I also decided to switch to Rev 01, because it has more interesting backgrounds and less lag in most levels (except LZ). I was also planning to submit it as multiple authors (JXQ, Upthorn & Carretero) because of the shear amount of material that both you and he have provided.

Marble 1 can also make use of the edge-of-rising-platform glitch, my brother (smizzla on TSC) has already managed 29 in real time. Otherwise, well done! The file doesn't seem to actually exist so I can't download it though... any assistance? :/

I like the new tricks you've found, but I think the new parts that you've played in this run can be optimized a good amount more: MZ2, MZ3, SBZ2 (especially after the level is complete when falling to the next level), and SBZ3 all looked like they could be improved to me. I also didn't care for most of the end-of-level antics. The game is relatively hex-edit friendly; why not give it a shot or team up with Upthorn?

I thought I noticed that, too, but I was quite impressed with the new glitches used! Good finds

I thought I noticed some places where further optimization would be possible, but since I'm no expert I'll throw in a yes for a good improvement. However if the others in this thread are correct, I'd expect this to be canceled in favor of a greater improvement.

I watched and was impressed. I don't normally like Sonic the Hedgehog 1 but this movie is good enough to keep me entertained.

While the run is a massive improvement over the current movie, I don't think the new bits were optimized enough, espeacially the bit where you enter Scrap Brain 3. Also you've incorparated minor errors from the previous runs as well. I'm holding back my vote atm.

I'm with mmbossman here. Very entertaining run and good finds. Teaming up for the new version sounds like a good idea.

Voting yes since I adore the glitches. But as mentioned earlier, if improvements can easily be found in such a famous game I'd be quite chocked if we won't see further improvement of this soon.

BTW, I found a glitch on MZ1 which allows the level to be completed in 15 seconds and I'm pretty sure this level can't be improved. It required a bit of sub pixel position to get off screen jump to work which enabled me to glitch to the end. I borrowed the previous movie so I didn't have to do the first part of the level. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/627414404/Upthorn%26JXQ-S1v3.gmv

Wow, this was really entertaining. I never knew that glitch in marble 3 actually even existed. for barring many entertaining glitches and an awesome TAS, A clear yes vote from me! (now if only you could spindash in sonic 1)

The glitches were really entertaining to watch. That and the fact it's over a minute faster than the published movie both get a yes vote from me.

This run either needs to have the new GMV uploaded and attached or needs to be cancelled and resubmitted, since the main download link still gives the long version of MZ1.

I have the same feeling about this run as I do about most 'improvements' made to the first few Sonic games. It was well played and has decent glitches. Still glitches which involve watching a level scroll by for a few seconds instead of watching tool assisted precision play, of actually doing the level, are fun to watch once and once only. To add a small rant... I mean example... Nitsuja's Sonic2 run is one of my faves on the site, and I have watched it many times. Nitsuja's Sonic3 run was a great watch, but I have seen the version it replaced by Sprintgods many more times, mainly due to Ice Cap Zone actually being visited. (Despite the lack of 2 player in that run.) Anyway, if I get round to voting its between a meh and a yes vote, leaning heavily towards meh. I can not decide for now, but I doupt this will be rejected anyway.

I watched this last night, while I've enjoyed the previous runs, I found that most of the stylistic choices made in this run were rather poor in comparison to previous versions. The glitches however were rather surprising, as I'd not expect them to be able to occur in such a manner. Weak yes vote from me on this.

Interesting find. I'd done something similar in order to achieve a time of 17 seconds 59 frames, but hadn't counted on just being able to jump clear through the wall. Instead, I landed inside the wall, zipped out, zipped through half of the end area, then had to play through the rest, starting with 0 speed, because a low speed zip left me unable to jump intime to clear a short wall. I've redone the way you showed, and improved your version by 14 frames (which brings it down to 15 seconds 04 frames -- 5 frames from 14 seconds), but I don't think it can be improved any further.

Nice run, just a few minor things which others have already mentioned. I'd love to see a TAS of the backwards Sonic though, that'd be amazing. :D

It would be nice. By the time there is a Green Hill Zone 1 TAS. Surprisingly the level can be completed in less seconds than fordwards. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfdomOtBQv0 http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/284461116/rtto_ghz1_19s.gmv
