Luigi and Mario are statiscally the same in this game, aren't they? The differences weren't made until the sequel. Why do a run with him?

Posting this to let you all know that Metroid 2 Select Glitch Info has been added to Game Resources. I basically just dumped everything I knew about the various things in this movie to a txt file, organized it, and formatted it for the page. Plus, I found out something interesting with missiles: When you move in the same direction they were fired, Samus's momentum will be added to the missiles regardless of whether the screen moves or not. I noticed this happening before, but the screen was moving at the time so I just assumed that missiles move mostly indepent of the screen. Obviously not. I don't know whether the same happens when moving away, so I'll need to test that. Maybe it's been posted here, I don't know. Edit: It would seem someone changed the page to Metroid 2 Tricks on me. If you were having trouble accessing it, click there instead. I had my reasons for calling it Select Glitch Info, but whatever.

Hm, interesting question... I'd have to say Samurai Pizza Cats. A simple action platformer; not too long as to be boring, but not so short it's over before you know it. Lots of stuff going on, very active, very colorful... Yeah. Very ideal. This may get usurped by my Metroid 2 project, though. Same stuff minus the color and plus a major glitch. Good stuff. ;P

^_^b I anticipate how badly the bosses get decimated.

Thankfully it's the only section like that. A little later I'm going to have to get some more refills, but they're more along-the-way.

My source for that information was Cardboard, and everything I've seen attests to that. I wonder where the discrepancy is? Also, the route was discovered mostly by accident. I just went to some random place, did the glitch, saw where it took me, and pieced things together. I'm pretty sure the route I have is not optimal, but it was the best I could manage. To give you all an idea of the tools I use, check out this desktop shot. Clockwise, the windows are: VBA's map viewer (crucial; allows me to see what the effects of the glitch will be and whether or not I got it to work); VBA; Gocha's memory reader (the Map X and Map Y were used when planning the route as they told me where I was on the map editor; right now I mainly use it for the enemy health and missiles); and M2Edit (map viewer; made route planning and navigation tons easier when used with Gocha's tool; download here). In the background is #nesvideos. The Fly Lady thing is my mom's. This is easily the most tool-intense movie I've made.

Also, I didn't get the awfully long refilling sequence a minute before the end. Couldn't you refill on the other enemies that were on the way?
Sadly, no. That enemy was the only chance I had to fill up on missiles at that point before I get another chance, so I had to fill up with just enough to get me through to that point. (remember, enemies drop only health or missiles, never both; all the other monsters I encountered drop health) Also, I prefer to think of "Hoverbike Metroid" as "Smiley Face Metroid". Just look at him grin! I also think he looks like Ridley's face. Glad you all like it so far. ;P

Alright, WIP time! Recorded using v19.3. It's a little under nine minutes, but it takes down 13 metroids and grabs all major upgrades plus four missile packs and an energy tank. It ends on the first zeta's doorstep. If enter his room before the victory music ends, you'll get to see a glitched up zeta in action for a while. Pretty weird stuff. I'll see what I can do about getting this on Youtube. Edit: Youtube video now up, as promised. Pirate Sephiroth: Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're talking about, I think I've been doing that already. Using just the select button can be used for all four directions, not just left and right. No need to press start. In this WIP I use it to create gaps beneath me while falling and platforms above me while jumping. If it's something else entirely, like getting the glitch to work in two directions at once, please clarify. I'd love to be wrong on this.

Glad I could be of SOME help somewhere. ;P Just watched your recent WIP. Not bad; good amount of action, plus some obvious marks of a TAS, like when you're about to ram headlong into a door right before it opens. Loved that part especially. Just one question I have: Have you considered what the optimal route might be?

I suppose I'll put an explanation here about my set. That way I can just refer people here whenever they ask. Eleven of the fourteen avatars I have are from Ferret Monogatari: Watashi no Okini Iri, a Japan-only pet sim for the Gameboy Color. Specifically, this ferret is a silver mitt I ended up naming Stuv... except for the "guru" avatar used in this post. He's just some DJ that teaches Stuv what moves to make during one of the three minigames available in it. The other three are of the Pokémon called Furret. This set has gotten me a lot of compliments around here, both guy and girl. I certainly wasn't anticipating as much attention as I've received from it. Edit[/b]: With Bisqwit's recent expansion of options, it became apparent that Stuv nor the furret were going to cut it. As such, I've decided to include a few of Jeanne Carley's ferret photos to fill in some of the blanks.

I haven't played the game myself, but I have made an interesting observation. Everywhere I go - here, message boards, web comics, blogs, etc. - everyone complains about how stupid the item situation is. They all talk about being barraged with items just seconds before the finish line. Certainly this isn't just a small problem.

There sure is. Kind of a shame. It was a good run, but was canceled without explanation. I wonder what gives? At one point I was working on a run that took out the Dark Demon. Lost the video though, and I haven't found the motivation to start it again.

On another note, if you look around on Youtube, you'll find some awesome remixes of the main tune done by the Japanese. Apparently these came as the result of a fad in that country surrounding this game.

There's a Pepper coin located in every level and battleship on every difficulty. Collecting one restores your shields; what collecting them ALL does is beyond me. Also (I haven't watched it yet), you said Miyu was your partner; wouldn't she be preferable as your main? She's faster AND has a stronger gun, plus she can be accessed faster than Fay, who has the same stats, because you wouldn't have to go through the animation the control scheme slot gives you. Other than that, I think this has potential. I look forward to it!

Shameless self plug. Lorenzo the Comic also has it youtubed for viewing ease. Not to steal your thunder (sorry if I did), but agreed, it's a piece of garbage. It's the sort of thing that's so terrible, it manages to achieve a state of transcendence; in its imperfections, it manages to become a Chthulian being: frightful, but on a higher level than the rest of us. Truly something to be feared.

I'd have to agree with that sentiment; glitched runs are good and all, but mainly consist of glitching to the final boss (sometimes beyond, even!), skipping much of the fun stuff. Because of the way this game was designed, a glitched run is forced to go through most of the main game anyway, allowing for a much broader view of what's going on and more time to appreciate the glitch. BTW, I've continued the run and collected the spider ball in under two minutes time. I've never been this excited for any other run I've done!

Do you remember anything more specific than that? Something that could tip us off? "Something to do with a maze" describes a rather large selection of games.

Raiscan found that already? Aw, man, here I was, thinking I was on to something. :/ Still, it could prove useful. I dunno. Anyway, the route has been finalized (now with convenient save state so you don't have to watch the first 12 minutes)! The second part was a bit of a headache to get done, but it's done! I'm positive there's a better route, but this is the best I could find. Man, I'm excited! It doesn't go all the way to the end; it's pretty obvious what will happen one I escape the glitched throne room, and not much in the way of exciting stuff is going to happen, so I decided to spare you the boring details. But yeah, it goes through and destroys the first 38 metroids and enters the last area with 45 missiles left - just enough to finish the game - in around 30 minutes. 30 unoptimized minutes! I'm guessing the run will end up being in the 25-27 minute range when finished. Anyway, enjoy! Go ahead and ask any questions. I don't know when I'll continue with the run, but this should do in the meantime.

Action puzzlers like this really annoy me. At first, they're rather fun to play, but after about 15 increasingly difficult and tedious levels, you realize, "I have 50 more of these to go through? Forget it." But they almost always make really fun movies. Yes!

First, I'm not entirely sure what's inherently wrong with complaining about workload (other than the usual impracticalities of complaining). Workloads at work can become rather much and be really stressful. Imagine your job required playing a series of long RPGs in a short period of time with a rather small deadline and bosses breathing down your neck (or some equivalent situation therein; basically just a ton of stuff to do and not much time to do it). If your paycheck depended on it, playing games can seem like homework. Second, if you read that cartoon again, you will notice that he DOES recognize that he shouldn't be complaining about "his good fortune"; so he DOES realize he has "a job many other young adults get wet dreams over." Third, I threw that in because the conversation was leaning towards reviewers' workloads, and thought that would show that perhaps there's an element of truth to it because SOMEONE was complaining about something along those lines. Whether it was right for him to complain wasn't what I intended to shift the conversation towards. Fourth... I'm not even sure WHY I'm backing him up as though he were a best friend of mine. Edit:

Since we're talking about reviewers here, I think I'll throw this here. It's a blog post by a 1up staffer wherein he complains about having too many long games to review.
