First, it has to have open source, or none of us can do anything about it. Why not open source? Commodore 64 is classic. There's no reason why it shouldn't be open source. Oh wait, it's shareware. Game over. Hopefully there's another Commodore 64 emulator. Edit: http://www.zophar.net/c64.html

The problem is that if you use the flash stopper, the jumping tank spawns and covers an entire platform, and if you jump into it, there goes one life.

I guess I forgot about that point. But at least in Rockman 2, you can suicide if you run out of weapon energy. Here, you may be permanently stuck.

I don't know; didn't we determine that tapping A when the text was already set to the highest speed in the first game slowed it down a little?
Strangely, although pressing A_A_... slows down fast text, pressing ABAB... does not. I want to make sure the lines advance as fast as possible, though.

This would also put you two steps closer to the table, which would save you ~36 more frames when you have to pick up your Totodile.
Thanks. I somehow thought about it months ago and forgot when I made the run. Same with the assistant.

The starting stats you rolled were E4FC (14/15 attack, 4/15 defense, 15/15 speed, and 12/15 special). Overall pretty good stats, but would it be worth it to trade a little speed for a higher special (if at all possible)?
To be honest, I didn't look at the stat DV's when getting the Pokemon because I didn't know where they were in memory. It was only a coincidence that both Pokemon DV's turned out to be as good as they are. I could only look at its gender for its attack level. It would be nice if you could you tell me where I can find the stat DV's, as well as other important variables like enemy HP. My future strategy is to stick with Geodude because its moveset is so powerful. Since Geodude is so slow, I must give it the Quick Claw. For Totodile, high attack DV is priority, followed by high speed DV. High defense DV helps, but it really depends on if I can get my strategy to work. Unless my future strategy changes, I won't be using Totodile for long, so special DV doesn't matter. For Geodude, high attack DV is priority, followed by high speed DV and high defense DV. Special DV doesn't matter because it's wasted due to exceptionally low special levels.

17000: Battle with rival: is manipulating a growl miss faster than letting it succeed? Or doesn't G/S have the 1/256 miss chance as in Blue/Red?
Most stat-only-modifying moves miss frequently, but it's actually slower to miss, much to my surprise. Why there is such a long pause between "... uses Growl/Sand-attack/Tail-whip/..." and "But it failed!" is beyond me. This is only in G/S. G/S has no 1/256 miss chance for 100%-accuracy moves under unmodified Accuracy/Evade stats. I missed some critical hits and Pidgey-Tackle-misses; it's not easy to get them and I was concerned more with the strategy, but I'll redo them. By the way, what is your method for manipulating critical hits in R/B?

39000: Only one pokémon. Is Rage the fastest choice?
I think Rage and Scratch take the same number of moves, but Rage requires one less critical hit.

I had a look at this hack and although it looks interesting, there are a few things that seem to detract from the hack: - Badly chosen music right from the beginning. The stage and boss music is good, but the boss defeated music and the first three tunes in the game are rather poor, in my opinion. - Quick Man's stage. Deliberately taking damage was the only way I could practically get through the first part without dying. I also used platform 2 at one point. The rest of the stage and the boss is a breeze. - Wily 1 stage. Did you know you can become trapped in parts of this stage without being able to escape or suicide? One part even forces use of the vertical reset glitch. I played through the 8 robot master stages and most of Wily 1 (without tool-assistance) before Wily 1 made me quit for the day. This hack is quite similar to Rockman Exile, a hack which I beat some time ago. P.S. I used Nesticle (emulator) for playing.

I've decided to go with Geodude for most of the run. Here is the run up to the first gym beaten: http://rapidshare.de/files/19472770/PokeGold.vbm.html Note: Delete .sav file before playing. About two minutes faster than my previous run. I'm planning on redoing this part because I think it can be done faster, but this seems to be the best strategy for raising Geodude's levels while beating the first gym reasonably fast. Geodude happens to learn Rock Throw just before the Vulpix in Union cave, which is good. I hope pressing ABAB... to dispose of dialog is optimal.

I watched a speedrun for super mario bros. 3 (not the tool assisted one), and I had thought his was better than it actually was. I think I just got confused because i watched a smb3 tool assited run here... well, anyways... I think I can probably beat a time of 11:15. I had thought the time was 11:08 or 11:07, which I thought to be VERY tough to beat, and then realizing it was 11:15 made me think I have more of a chance to beat the speedrun. So in the next few months I will be doing a non- tool assisted run of smb3 to see if I am actually capable of beating the record. :)
Don't get too overconfident. Speedrunning is one of the hardest things to do. I chose making TAS movies over speedrunning because it (speedrunning) was so stressful. For SMB3, 11:15 is really good, better than almost anyone thinks. Randomness doesn't help at all.

The only problem I see is the large difference between 1/2 and 3/4/5/6, in terms of glitching, gameplay style, and length. The games to run should be similar.

  • 2*p^a, where p is prime of form 4*n+3 and a>0
  • p^a, where p is prime of form 4*n+3 and a>0
I'll leave out the proof to see if anyone else can get it.

When the game is paused, do you have to hit all of the buttons that you want pressed for that frame, hold them ALL down and then hit F1? Or can you just push a button once and then F1?
In all other emulators I've used, it is necessary to hold down all buttons you want for a frame and press the frame advance key, unless the emulator supports auto-hold. I don't know about Final Burn Alpha. F1 is frame advance? Of all the keys they picked, they chose one in the far corner. Somebody remap the buttons.

Don't double-jump for 2 reasons. 1. I think you'll save time to not do that. It looked liked the enemies, (Which you use to make a double-jump) slow down the character. Maybe its just me. Imagination! 2. Its fun to watch someone play the game different isn't it? To finish da game with almost no double-jumps.
In the run, Princess did two double-jumps near the end of 4-1. It seems that double-jumping does not slow down the character. If it were not true, the SMB2 movies would certainly not double-jump where unnecessary. It is also nice to show as many glitches as possible. Most people would rather see a lot of double-jumps than no double-jumps.

As far as I know, nobody here wants to steal anybody else's idea. We all want to help others and have fun. Stealing other's ideas is no fun. So it bothers us if someone is afraid that others will steal ideas, and not post plans as a result.

Almost everyone does that. Sometimes people don't post plans if there is a lack of interest, which is rather natural.

I was going to mention that Gyarados relearns Bite at level 20, so you can replace Bite if it's low on PP. By the way, are there any Ethers that are worth getting?

Unlike longer runs, SMB2 and other short movies are very demanding. Genisto's run is "obsolete" in a way, being old and a Famtasia movie, so people will not settle for a movie that fails to use new tricks. A SMB2 run must convince everyone that it is the fastest possible. I'm not sure you're even convinced because it appears your only goal was to beat an "obsolete" movie. I know it's not that way, but it acts like Genisto's run is the only thing existing. I take it that you've never seen these movies. Watch them now: http://tasvideos.org/movies.cgi?id=494 http://tasvideos.org/movies.cgi?id=510 By the way, DonamerDragon redid a third of the warpless SMB2 run just to correct a mistake. I recommend doing longer (interesting) games which aren't so contested and don't have such high expectations.

Just wondering, but was Dragon Rage able to OHKO most of the Pokemon around Nugget Bridge and beyond? How about rival battle? At levels 12-16, most Pokemon would be close to 40HP. Or maybe I'm missing something.

I had a look at the run. It misses out the illusionary glitch to defeat Birdo in 1-2 (that's a big one). Also, I think picking up the enemy at the end of 4-1 is unnecessary and mushroom blocks should be dropped on Birdo, not thrown. Princess doesn't jump over the wall on 6-2, but that's the fault of the Princess. As the Guidelines say, be aware: http://tasvideos.org/Guidelines.html#be_aware_ At least two recent SMB2 runs have the illusionary glitch in them. Just because the run aims to obsolete one movie doesn't mean it should ignore everything else. I'm withholding my vote for now. In my opinion, "meh" is a useless option. Either "yes" or "no".

I think that Mega Man Xtreme is a good game to run, even though it is overshadowed by the SNES Mega Man X games. What do you think? I completed three stages, but don't expect perfect since I am not so familiar with this game. This is my second runthrough of easy mode. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1001/Mega%20Man%20Xtreme.vbm There are many strange glitches in the game, but I'll leave you to figure it out from watching. Tell me if there are any glitches I missed or haven't thought of.

Your run (smb2) looks better than last time. However, I'm surprised that you left out the illusionary glitch. And I think it is faster to take damage and drop the block onto Birdo rather than throw it. Next time, check the Super Mario USA tricks page on this site as well as other smb2 runs before doing your run.

So getting the Leg part is part of the run? I didn't know that. But it still desyncs because Zero doesn't actually get the part, then jumps into the pit and dies. Edit: It turns out that I am still living in ancient history with VBA 1.7.2 v9. I downloaded v17 and it works fine now. Now to rectify the confusion that I caused for months...

That's an odd place for it to desync. Which lift, the one with the Leg part under it or the one with 1HKO spike balls? He asked, as if that would help solve the problem.
The first one, after the first save point. When it desyncs, Zero goes under the lift and goes to Leg part capsule, triggering the Dr. Light conversation. It would have been funny if he actually got it, because it took me a while to realize that it desynced.

Boco has a habit of posting like that. Don't worry about it. I had a look at your run. Although the run desynced at the Wire Sponge lift, I could tell that the run was not as fast as possible. It is faster to have Zero dash along the ground and jump (right+right+jump), rather than jump and air-dash. I also think the damage on the first boss was unnecessary. I definitely look forward to your revision, so good luck on that. I just wonder what's causing the desync. I have the right ROM. And use frame advance! You'll be impressed.

Yes, but slowing down (or speeding up) the CPU cycles has no effect on real-time. You can slow it to 10% speed and some event that takes 1 minute to trigger still takes 1 minute to trigger.
