By the way, when I said that "I feel that the run is over once the arbitrary execution has begun", I'm not advocating changing timing/ending rules for this reason (obviously one can argue that if a TAS doesn't look complete, then it shouldn't be considered complete). What I mean is that arbitrary execution renders discussion of what constitutes a proper ending to be rather pedantic. Not just arbitrary execution, but any sufficiently game-breaking glitch, does this. See Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow.

Ok, I did an actual comparison now, not by calculating the frames for one move (which I failed miserably the first time), but in a real-world example by using the Cherrygrove Rival with different possible hit/miss combinations:
    - Growl miss, Tackle miss: 19208 (current strategy, reference) - Growl miss, Tackle hit: 19242 (+34 frames, e.g. way slower) - Growl hit, Tackle miss: 19194 (-14 frames, e.g. faster) - Growl hit, Tackle hit: 19230 (+22 frames, more or less the difference)
I forgot to mention. There is no rule that Rival's Chikorita has to use Growl first and Tackle second. Chikorita could use and miss Tackle both times. It also seems that a Tackle miss is maybe 3 or so frames faster than a Growl hit. But I could be wrong.

As for goal choices or "speed/entertainment tradeoff", the only thing that I think is of issue is aiming not to be hit at certain times. I should mention that being hit by status moves is some number of frames (~20) faster than not being hit. I think there is nothing wrong about the ending of this TAS compared to any other glitched Pokemon Gold TAS that has been submitted to this site. Personally, I feel that the run is over once the arbitrary execution has begun, since at that point, the game has been violated beyond its integrity. (Arbitrary execution means just that. You can do anything.) Oh, and I'll be posting an encode soon. Edit: Here are the encodes: Edit 2: These are encodes for the older (31:31) version of the TAS. The newer (31:21) version of the TAS is here. I'm encoding right now. But it might take a while.

Now that I watched it, I have a question. When talking to Prof. Elm's Assistant (the one that gives the Egg), is it really faster to talk from the front (below)? I thought it would have been faster to talk from the left; the steps your player takes remains the same and the Assistant takes one less step. Oh, and also this movie syncs on BizHawk 1.6.0a.

I'll look into this, as it is quite interesting. But I wish you had told us you were working on this. I was just about to get started on a Pokemon Gold TAS.

The existence of such a representation is not so difficult to imagine once you know any integer can be written as the sum of distinct Fibonacci numbers, as you can see that the densest sum F(2)+F(3)+F(4)+F(5)+F(6)+F(7)+... can change into F(4)+F(6)+F(8)+... as desired. The proof of the uniqueness, however, is a little formal since it often requires a non-constructive argument.
Proof of uniqueness can be done constructively. Let's say n is an integer with F(m)≤n<F(m+1). Then F(m) must be a summand of n. Otherwise, n is at most: ● F(m-1)+F(m-3)+...+F(2), but n≥F(m)=F(m-1)+F(m-3)+...+F(2)+1, or ● F(m-1)+F(m-3)+...+F(3), but n≥F(m)=F(m-1)+F(m-3)+...+F(3)+1, contradiction. (A summand of 1 is always considered to be F(2) for the purpose of consecutive Fibonacci number.) Then n-F(m)<F(m-1). We can then repeat the argument on n-F(m) to write it uniquely as the sum of distinct Fibonacci numbers. Adding F(m) then gives a unique representation of n as the sum of distinct Fibonacci numbers. (Using induction, of course.) In fact, this representation is the same as those of the greedy algorithm posted above. ("Greedy algorithm" here means "take the largest Fibonacci number F(m) as summand and repeat for n-F(m).)

I think this is a bug but I don't know if the error is on my end. I am currently using Pokemon Gold ("Pokemon - Gold Version (UE) [C][!].gbc"), but, when the in-game option uses Stereo mode instead of Mono, the resulting sound sounds like one side of Stereo sound output being played mono (on both sides), rather than the two sides of Stereo sound output being played stereo as it should be.

Try Photobucket.com. There may be other (better) ones out there, but that's the one I use.

After you started replaying the movie, did you try loading the savestate before the end of playback? It must be done before the end of playback.

Which version of FBA are you using? v0.0.7? Is "Open Read-Only" unchecked in Replay input? Resuming previous work is impossible in Read-Only mode.

OK, I fixed it. By the way, if Genesis is released now, then this page should be rewritten: http://tasvideos.org/Bizhawk/Genesis.html . I don't think I am qualified to rewrite it though.

If you have made a savestate, then it should be possible to load the latest savestate you made previously, when you continue the next day. If not, you can replay the movie until near the end, make a savestate, and continue from there. There movie must be replayed in read-write mode (not read-only), so that when the savestate is loaded, it will resume progress.

I think what he meant was that the bug is removed in all versions after 1.5.3. In other words, the bug is removed in 1.6.0a, the latest version. Try that version.

I think I found some bugs in 1.6.0a. - If a Lua script is quit/paused while a joypad key's value is set to false in the script (e.g. k.B=false → joypad.set(k)), then it will remain in the not pressed state even when no scripts are running (e.g. pressing the B key does nothing) unless a future script changes its value to true or string. - If a Lua script is quit/paused while a joypad key's value is set to string ("invert") in the script (e.g. k.B="invert" → joypad.set(k)), then it will remain in the invert state even when no scripts are running (e.g. not pressing the B key means that B is pressed; pressing the B key means that B is not pressed) unless the core is rebooted or changed. - Attempting to load large BIN files tends to give one of the following two error messages: For me, the errors occurred when loading the Saturn game Magic Knight Rayearth ("Magic Knight Rayearth.bin") as well as the Sega CD games Terminator ("Terminator.bin") and Penn & Teller's Smoke and Mirrors ("PTSM1.bin"). No error occurred when loading the Saturn game Castlevania: Symphony of the Night/Nocturne in the Moonlight ("Castlevania - Symphony of the Night.iso"), so I don't know whether or not this is a BIN problem.

While we're on Fibonacci numbers, I remember my old maths teacher was very proud of being the first person to prove the following: The only Fibonacci numbers which are also twin primes are 3, 5 and 13. (A twin prime is a prime number that differs from another prime number by 2.) He never showed us the proof, but it must have been relatively elementary for a proof discovered in the 80's because he never even did a master's. If anyone can find a proof, I'd be really happy indeed. Also I guess the fact that elementary proofs keep popping up to solve age-old problems is hope for amateur mathematicians everywhere.

Against Blue's final Pokemon. Will they win? Edit: TPP is victorious. Finally after 16 days and 7 hours. ... Now what are they going to do?

They're fighting the Elite Four now. Didn't think they would get through Victory Road so fast. Edit: Artificial Stupidity is giving the player an actual chance to win.

I don't have much time right now to explore what the glitch does. It seems to be only a junk message/sound glitch rather than one which can be controlled at will. Generally, glitches that allow the program counter to jump into RAM are more useful towards arbitrary execution.

They went all the way to the Power Plant on Anarchy and caught Zapdos with a Master Ball. So many things could have gone wrong, and yet, it all went right. And they went to the Power Plant through the Route 9 ledge again. They still have to withdraw Zapdos, but barring a PC disaster, they now have two strong fighters. By the way, new TPP updater: http://tpp.aninext.tv/ Edit: A massive PC war is going on right now [/understatement]. They just deposited Pidgeot and Lapras, and changed from Box 1 to Box 2. Also deposited Zapdos and others into Box 2. Chance of killing Pokemon is extremely high at this point. As much as it is fun time, I can't stick around for the incoming massacre. I'll come back later.

Basically, hundreds of years ago, before electrons were discovered, somebody guessed randomly that the charge carriers in a metal were positive. He guessed wrong. Physics has never changed the convention.
I don't think it's so much that people back then were guessing randomly as to the nature of charge carriers as it is simply sheer convention, because no one knew what was going on. By the way, here's some history: http://www.nuffieldfoundation.org/practical-physics/electric-charge-and-current-short-history

The same problem exists with some publications in http://tasvideos.org/Movies-Windows.html and http://tasvideos.org/Movies-DOS.html as well. It appears as such: http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b185/jhchan8/error.png It also seems to depend on window dimensions and font size.

Pidgeot (last Pokemon remaining) vs. trainer's Gastly. Pidgeot with no chance of winning (not even Struggle) and Gastly with its accuracy lowered all the way needing Confuse Ray hit + self damage, or Night Shade hit, to end the battle. The epic battle finally ended a few minutes ago. It's not like there are any non-terrible battles, but the ones involving ghosts are beyond terrible, as well as funny. Edit: Apparently, the whole battle lasted over an hour.

They just got the Silph Scope. After the trolls died down, they were able to use Democracy to use the elevator and then get it. Now back to Anarchy time.

I knew that was going to happen. Well done guys. Who cares about the Silph Scope anyway? This is nothing more than a giant multiplayer open world game.
