I had a look at this one. There were some neat differences (item-x differences, final boss), but it doesn't stand out from what we already have. It seems slow for whatever reason (possibly due to lack of conventional item-x), and the scrolling glitch became annoying after a while. I heard there is a hard version of this hack that involves changes to damage recoil and recovery. Perhaps doing that would be even better, but I can't guarantee it. I'll vote no.

This one will be tough to judge. I had a look at it and it didn't seem much different than the existing SNES version, although the glitched counter final room final time everything was interesting. There's still no action, and half of the movie is already in the SNES version.

I agree with Fractal. Why not re-submit it when this one gets rejected?
Well, my point is that because there is every reason to stop TASing this game, anyone who makes a complete TAS should at least have acknowledgement. That doesn't mean we'll accept it though.

I've essentially decided it, but because of the system, I cannot formally decide it until 72 hours after submission. Unless I set it to cancel first.

This run is very unoptimized; it's of testrun quality. I'm ashamed to have even made it.
Knowing how difficult the game makes it to TAS (I tried it earlier and gave up), I'd say you did the best you could. I don't think anyone would want to improve it anytime soon.

I acknowledge that a lot of effort is put into runs like these. However, as it is now, we don't accept runs of a single level out of many, that don't complete the game or do anything notable compared to other levels. That's just the way it is. The existing publication was an exception that was allowed over four years ago. Since then, the audience has generally been dissatisfied with single level tracks. There have been arguments before about to what extent this site should cover games (especially goals, because a single game can have many goals). Mostly it has been determined by audience response. As for the game itself, I personally don't think much about a full game run, but I would say such a run deserves publishing as technical merit. However, there is this other issue, with the pause glitch, that could make it more interesting, if it is possible to pull off the glitch on some laps in Grand Prix mode. Of course, anyone who makes a single-track improvement to the published run, whether glitched or not, will have it obsolete that run, even if such improvement stands to be rejected in its own right. However, one should not expect a good response for such a movie nowadays (though doing it glitched increases the chance of a good response, in my opinion).

Even for a playaround, doesn't we require a verification movie for the save?
No one follows that "rule", except for movies based off the SRAM of existing publications, or this movie, where you couldn't trust the SRAM even if you wanted to.

Thank you, neo_omegon. Here is the new subtitle file: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?cn3st8s2az46eaz I made some changes: - I put "Subtitles by FractalFusion, neo_omegon" at the beginning. - I put extra battle messages in the 2nd and 3rd glitch battles. I forgot them before. - I changed all of "Shulla" to "Shura". - I removed "This special skill is very useful on the next boss." - I merged "You are strong. Let's call it a day. Goodbye!" and "Ledesma left." - I changed "Bio Paradise" to "Bio Palace".

I believe you are mistaken. Are you sure you didn't confuse Hotarubi with all the females who named their username after a manga/anime character?

teh noj, people who watch movies aren't always informed of how the movie was made. They only see the end product. Also, entertainment and technical scores are correlated. A person who gives a very low entertainment score tends to give a low technical score. Not that it should be that way. It's just one person though.

teh noj, I found that the game completes naturally if you end input after clearing the last monster's message (before the scene cuts to your player walking into the fort). Is it OK to end it there, or would you like to have extra input to go through the finale as fast as possible?

Here's a screenshot: I looked at the run, and I'd say it deserves publishing, even though I find it boring.

I agree with those who say the goal makes it too similar to a normal run. There aren't enough coins in the way to make it interesting beside the couple times that it makes a significant difference. Oh, and I just noticed that in 4-2, the pipe glitch cannot be done unless you bump forward by going through the wall near where the coins are. Edit: I'm mistaken. It can be done as shown in andrewg's speedrun at SDA.

I like it enough. The flying over levels thing got me by surprise. Better than just killing enemies over and over. But I'll wait for more opinions before making a final decision on this one.

I'd like to see it. Microstorage gives you a link. Just post it here. If you lost it, upload it again.

sparky, please wait. We have a faster version of the intro stage. Rolanmen1 and Mothrayas were also working on X4 using X. But they used the Japanese version. I need to talk to them first, so that we can talk about it together.

neo_omegon (and Flygon), I'm trying out a different subtitle format: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SubStation_Alpha This format allows for different fonts, bold, italics, and positioning, as well as others. Aktan suggested me to use this. I looked at your subtitles already but I am changing the content: - I am retranslating (some of) the Japanese. - I am putting in place names so the audience has an idea where in the world the player is. I took the names from an English walkthrough on gamefaqs. - I am putting extra messages during the movie that clarify some of the game. Most importantly, I am using battle messages, and I will include the last few bosses' HP. After I'm done, I'll post it here so that someone can check if it is good (subtitle locations, duration, place names, and information).

From my experience, soft subtitles directly on the game screen are highly annoying. That's why I'd place them in a black space underneath the screen. Either the normal encode must include the black space, or two encodes must be made. Edit: Using AVISynth, it is possible to cut it down to one encode, and let AVISynth place the black space. But then the subtitles would have to be in the AVISynth script directly, as AVISynth can only read external text files in its custom format.

neo_omegon, I'm planning to write subtitles. But I'm interested in your subtitles as well. I plan to make two encodes, one without any subtitles, and one with subtitles. The one with subtitles will have extra space below the screen, so that the subtitles do not interfere with the game screen. I have reviewed your run thoroughly and it is well-planned out. I'll vote yes. I have a question though. What is BP and what does it do?

I will try to judge this submission some time. But I am currently planning to understand how the movie works first. This will take a while.

The problem appears to be savestate.save() . I tested the function with my own script and managed to fix it by putting another vba.frameadvance() right before savestate.save() .
local g=savestate.create()

local x

while true do

x=movie.framecount()

if x==14538 then
 vba.frameadvance()
 savestate.save(g)
end

if x==14563 then
 savestate.load(g)
end

vba.frameadvance()

end
I don't know for sure if it works with the savestate.save() in your code. You might have to give one frame in advance. Edit: Sorry, it doesn't seem to work if I put other numbers instead of 14538. So it must be something else.

It's been addressed a few times before: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9667 http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8367 We currently don't know why it's messing up, unfortunately. Very little testing has been done on Lua. We suspect it is due to how frameadvance() works, but we are not sure. Try using gui.register() and movie.framecount() instead. The function registered by gui.register() should execute every frame.

By the way, have you considered tackling Extreme mode as well? It would be interesting how that would turn out.
Haven't thought of it yet. However, you can't start directly from Extreme mode, and there is no way to record from a save.

Um, why does the published movie have a (?) at the end, like the real names are unknown. Too long if they were to be there?
Thanks for reporting. I fixed it. The "(?)" is not supposed to be there.
