Yeah, I do this too. I've watched a lot of the movies without voting. I think it would be pretty disrespectful to badmouth something I don't understand. One concern I have with Arc's 5-point poll is that the well-known fact that a game can be played perfectly but simply not be entertaining, or a game could be so loved that it attracts votes despite some imperfections (and some people would still rate it 5, probably). Xkeeper's idea might be more suitable. I recall someone saying once that it would be cool if you could rate different aspects of the TAS. One could rate different aspects like: "game quality", "game TAS suitability", "improvability", "interest level", "ease of understanding"... but that would get really, really complicated. Although perhaps the voting system isn't perfect I don't think it matters that much, since it's entirely the judges' call.

I watched Boco's WIP recently. One question I have is about avoiding save points. If I recall correctly, you only get text explaining save points the first time you stand on them. A lot of the game's save points are positioned in the fastest path through corridors (ie. in the ancient library) and because there are so many I'm thinking it may be worth activating this text the first time. Has anyone tried to figure out if that's worthwhile or not? (I'm guessing nobody has, since nobody is working on this now.) Maza already mentioned the secret passage in the Wind Shrine. Those were the only possible time savers that were obvious enough for me to spot in the WIP. Using blue mages is a great idea.

This movie was a great watch. I'm totally voting yes. I'd still really love to see a Rock TAS and maybe an improvement of this. It sounds like you learned that dash-jumping is slower than dashing somewhat late by reading your comments -- perhaps shorter jumps early on (I believe there are some in the intro level) could save tiny amounts of time by spending more of it on the ground. Nice to see cool tricks in this at the end, too.

The warps were cool, and there were other minor time savers. There might be 1% left to improve unless new warps are found. It's very well done. Although the two runs in the submission queue are quite different (the other has no glitchy warps), if the management felt they only wanted to publish one of them I'd recommend this one... but I voted yes on both.

Hm. I think I may have accidentally discouraged Frenom by mentioning how slow Demi's attack was during a segment of the game that probably took him days to get right... Whoops.

You know MattyXB, I definitely agree with you that a glitch & warp run shouldn't obsolete a full-length TAS, but you've made a lot of improvements over your 3rd version besides just the warps. You learned about those critical hits AND improved the times for every boss except for one. I bet that the long version could still be improved by a few minutes because of that. I think it would make sense if someone wanted to publish this movie but not the full length one. I haven't watched the latest WIP yet because I'm not at home right now. By the time I get around to seeing it you'll probably be finished. :)

I watched this movie on google videos and it was pretty good, but it's only 13 minutes and 21 seconds long (despite having the correct title and everything). Obviously a whole lot of the game was cut off.

I wasn't familiar with this game: either it's really neat or you made it look really neat. But one of those villages was built on top of a pile of human bones, which is just weird. Yeah, Genesis could use more love. Where's Frenom lately? Heheh...

I'm not very familiar with this game, but it was very fun to watch and very, very fast at some parts. I voted yes.

Wow... lots of zipping early on. You made a mockery of the drop ceiling in the ice area. This is a good run, Bablo, and this game is very well-suited to this sort of thing. Keep it up!

Does the chocobo move faster on the slippery ice in the ice cave than the hero (A) does? It doesn't look like it does, so I'm not so sure if two of the times when you rode the chocobo inside the ice cave saved any time. Did you already check whether it saves time or not? Riding the chocobo definitely saves you some time walking in the snowfields, and at least once in the ice cave. And the Kraken fight is just funny now!

New WIP is nice. I didn't watch the Cyclops fight before, it's pretty good. At first I was thinking "He's using the axe? What the heck?" but then I realized how handy it is to hit above/below the character while facing sideways, and swinging faster than the chain or sickle. It's good. The golem is fast too. You can sure gain levels quickly when you get to Dark Lord's castle at level 12! It would be neat to learn if there are more places where glitchy warps could occur. I know you pretty much need to do the Cyclops to get the morning star, but if there were other warps between different caves later on it could save a lot of time. I wonder if anyone has tried to figure out what each dungeon room is next to.

I've played this game, but not very much. I enjoyed the movie... in particular how you run through enemies while the screen tries to catch up to you. I think I'll vote yes for this one, though I think the best screenshot would be when the raptor's butt is zapped in the first level.

This was pretty good. The highlight for me was the clock tower before Death, where the moving platforms allow a lot of good shortcuts. ...but everyone's right that the Death fight looks pretty sloppy. What different kinds of strategies did you attempt to use? It seems like if there were any way to get a boomerang "hovering" on him, it would save a ton of time. Also, if you intend to improve or redo the run sometime, I'd really like to see a "no girls rescued" run like you said. I kind of thought that a rescueless run would be much faster... I was surprised when I watched this. EDIT: I looked over the game's topic, and you seem to have already indicated that he moves away from all hits and is invincible for a bit. I guess that the "hovering" is out of the question.

This is a pretty great run. I highly doubt there will be another 10 minutes shaved off of this one, but I look forward to seeing somebody try to play this game slightly more quickly using the second character in auto mode someday. Heh: insane FFMQ GameFAQs post Edit: The topic was purged and the ID was invalid. The above link now goes to GameFAQs FFMQ board. For future reference it was a guy saying he beat the game 100% in 50 minutes. I asked how he did it faster than DonamerDragon and he didn't reply.

Wow. MattyXB, I've been watching WIPs on these various runs for a while now, and you're definitely getting much, much better! There are a lot of things about this recent run which are very cool. This game is really good, but it's slow and kind of hard to make entertaining, I think... but you're doing a very good job with this game. -I like the graphical glitch with the sword when you go to bed at Kett's. I wouldn't take a sword to bed with me, anyways. -I think you may have saved some time (and gained some valuable levels) by buying the axe at the first opportunity. -Your play seemed very smooth in the Marsh Cave. The positions of the monsters are all perfect! -The glitch warps are very neat. Do you know if there are any strange things that will happen later on as a result of these warps? -I noticed a few times when you enter the weapon/item menu just when you're moving to a new screen. Is there a reason for this? Does it save time, or is that just when you chose to do it? The lizardman fight seemed a little worse than in the last full submitted run. Was that difficult to manipulate? You seem to be very good at having the monsters in the correct positions, so it seems strange. I recall that in your submitted run you ended up cornering all of them in the lower right hand part of the screen. This is the only place where it seemed like you'd done better before.

I'm pretty sure there are varying jump heights. I'll watch it again to see if any jumps slow him down. Do you know what stage number it was or anything? As for the hits...

One other thing that made the recording hard was that there was no way to tell if your hits reached their target in frame advance. Successful hits are indicated by a special sound, but you can't hear it as you're recording frame by frame. Therefore, I had to press the attack button and then switch back to full speed in order to check if the attack succeeded.
So perhaps those hits were accidents that were left in?

I'd still say this contest idea was a success. The movie was really good. FODA mentioned that there are possible improvements. Are you guys all going to work together again on an improved run? And how much time do you think can be saved? The pipe glitch is pretty neat, I don't think it subtracted too much from the run... there's still lots of action.

Hahah, I like that. This run is pretty insane. At first I was accidentally watching it at 200% and the screen was sort of a big blur -- I could barely see the blue thing that was sometimes onscreen. After fixing that it was just very fast and fun. Yes vote.

I hadn't watched the WIP for a while. The Dark Lord fight is pretty cool, I'm glad you tried to do that one-hit-kill fight with style, MattyXB. I also liked how you beat the Julius clones. The chest planning still worked very nicely at the end of the movie. I'm still really looking forward to the glitch/warp run, if that is indeed possible. It's hard to say if this is near optimal, but I voted yes. A note to others: Some may wonder how much time is lost by doing a "takes minimum damage" run. Because MattyXB plays at a low level and never takes the time to find or purchase armor, he would die in 1-2 hits after the first few dungeons. He avoids or one/two-hit-kills most enemies (needed for level ups) so I think that if he chose to take damage it would perhaps save a small amount of time and only very early in the game -- hitting the enemies and walking through is about as fast anyways.

Okay. Maybe when you do the glitch run, you should try gaining experience after you warp. The monsters would be hard for your level, but maybe with the way experience increases as you advance in the game, the levelling would go much faster. For example, maybe killing one enemy in the snowfields takes 10 seconds, but gives you a level right away. That might be faster than killing mushrooms at the very beginning. That would require a bit of experimentation to figure out, though.
