Using any unrelated disk to swap with breaks the rule that demands the game image to be real. http://tasvideos.org/MovieRules.html#GameMustBeReal If you use a different image and make it interfere with the original image, fully or partially read by the console, you're no longer playing the same game anymore, you're playing two games, or more. If you can make it work on the console (and be accurately emulated) without using any other images, we can continue this interesting talk.
To my knowledge that rule kills it for Forbidden Memories. Thanks. I did bring up another issue. Say someone wants to do a NG+ TAS on the Japanese version. My understanding is that alongside the TAS, the user would have to submit a movie file creating the desired save file. However, an optimal save file for FM NTSC-J requires use of the Pocketstation accessory, and its infrared capabilities. BizHawk has no support for the Pocketstation, and to my knowledge no Pocketstation emulator currently supports the infrared stuff. Am I right in concluding that an NG+ TAS with an optimal file is at this time just not allowed in any way under the TASVideos rules? While my mind is on this, I'll bring up one more dumb thing (disclaimer: I have no intention of doing this, nor does anyone else to my knowledge, but may as well mention it). Someone could want to do an FM NG+ TAS with the cards obtainable without the Pocketstation. Strictly speaking, the optimal way to do this involves buying the Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth card. This costs 999999 starchips, and the only way to get starchips is to win 5 a time from a duel. A back of the envelope calculation suggests a movie file creating a save file with this card bought could be around 5 billion frames long. It's very possible a bot could make this movie, but I wonder if BizHawk would start breaking at this point. What would the policy be on this?

My example is Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories for the PS1. There's a video of someone performing the disc swap at https://youtu.be/ltwvh_yZbGk. It's not in English so I'll explain. You swap out the disc and put in another one before the end of the duel, and when the game tries to load your drop it bugs out and gives you the 'drop' 000. When this happens, the game takes the bottom card in your deck in the pre-duel menu and morphs it into the card with an ID 256 greater. This can be used to obtain cards that are otherwise unobtainable, e.g. Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon, the most powerful card in the game. This would probably speed up the Any% TAS, and would allow you to use said card in an NG+ TAS on the NTSC-U version. It can also give you glitch cards with an ID above 722 (the maximum ID of a normal card), and some of these are very powerful.
Sounds like you need a blank disk image as a part of the multi-disc xml, correct? Does this even work in the emulator?
It's unknown exactly what type of isos work, but generally speaking small isos do the trick (cheat discs are typically good for this). I've done it on BizHawk with various isos, one member of the Forbidden Memories community has done it by swapping in 'Big League Slugger Baseball', and I've done it on my unmodded PAL PS2 by swapping in an Xploder cheat disc.

I'll bring up that you can obtain that card legitimately in the NTSC-J version, but there are two issues. 1. That version is for the most part slower than NTSC-U because it gets through textboxes more slowly. 2. At the moment you wouldn't be able to make a movie legitimately obtaining that card because getting it requires using the IR capabilities of the Pocketstation, which to my knowledge is not supported by any emulator.

Yes, BEUD can be drawn like every other card if you have it in your deck. I have asked at http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=471647#471647 whether disc swapping would be allowed in this situation. So, just wait and see what the judges say on the matter.

Drawing a specific 5 cards isn't the hardest thing in the world, because you could set up your deck in advance specifically to make it work. Although BEUD is faster anyway, so if you can use that it doesn't matter. All feos said in that topic is if it's a game that requires multiple discs, then it's allowed. You do not need multiple discs to play FM, so it's not covered by what they said. Oh, another thing. If you were allowed to disc swap in Any%, you'd skip the Heishin MBD and get a strong monster from disc swap. BEUD requires Ancient Tool so not a good option, but Gate Guardian requires Supporter in the Shadows which you could do.

I do that for everyone except Pegasus, Heishin 2, Seto 3, DarkNite, and Nitemare. It turns out that strategy doesn't work for those duelists, because they can see your face-down monsters and will never suicide into them in the circumstances you describe. The only way to win in 1 turn is Exodia. The Exodia cutscene is very long, so long in fact that a 2 turn non-Exodia win is faster. I've not checked how Exodia compares to the 3 turns. You can certainly do DarkNite in 2 turns in an NG+ run: MBD + Megamorph, he sets a harmless trap, play a second MBD for game (he can start out with no monsters). But if you had BEUD, you could summon an 8000 atk BEUD turn 1 with triple Megamorph and Dragon Treasure/Bright Castle and Raigeki/Crush Card turn 2, or do something turn 1 that means they don't play a monster and then play the 8k BEUD. If someone wanted to make that for TASVideos, they'd have an issue where they have to make a movie of a save that gets the BEUD. I suppose you could disc swap to get 000 to glitch a BEUD if such a thing were allowed. Oh, you could also play Tremendous Fire turn 1 and follow it up with a 7k MBD. That can be set up easily enough. But that'd leave you with a 3 turn Nitemare.

Absolutely amazing. That Cortex fight in particular was wonderful. Yes from me.

Sound bug in mGBA with BizHawk 2.0.1 and 2.1.0. When moving past a dialogue box in Yu-Gi-Oh! - Duel Monsters 7 Kettou Toshi Densetsu (Japan), there is a small crackle sound as shown in the video below. I do not get the problem if I use VBA-Next, or mGBA with BizHawk 1.12.0 or 1.13.1. I also do not get the problem if I download and use mGBA 0.6.0 directly though. Link to video

Most likely I'm missing something here, but if you require |x| < 1 to use this series, then later let y → 1, doesn't that then imply that you've used x=-1 and hence |x|=1? Does this all work out because you're taking limits? (Is this similar to finding f(0) when f(x) = sin(x)/x ?)
Yes, the formula with y in it only needs to hold for y < 1, and then I take a limit (which can give you a proof that the formula holds for y = 1, i.e. x = -1, but by then I'm already done). This means that you do need a brief justification for why taking the limit is valid here, which I do give but don't fully spell out. (It's a tiny bit different from the sin(x)/x thing, there you're saying that if f is a continuous function around 0 that is equal to sin(x)/x for x =/= 0, then f(0) = 1)

Some people here are incredibly smart mathematicians and I've never had any luck obfuscating an otherwise straightforward problem, so I imagine this challenge will not prove as difficult as I would hope. Prove that where n is a positive integer. (I'm actually pretty sure n can be any positive real number, if that helps.) I hope I transcribed that correctly...
The binomial series tells us that, if |x| < 1, then we have By multiplying each factor of the product by n and then dividing by n^k, and then substituting y = -x we get As y → 1, the terms of the infinite sum monotonically decrease, and they all have the same sign, so we can interchange the sum and the limit and so the left hand side converges to the sum in Bobo's post, plus 1. Meanwhile if α > 0 then the RHS converges to 0. Now subtract 1 from both sides and set α to 1/n.
