Thanks for commenting :) To answer your questions: 1) There can only be 12 shots in memory at once. A shot isn't out of the game's memory until it is either off the screen, or its explosion has gone through its entire animation. So I have to wait for that on a lot of bosses. 2) If you go the top route on Level 5 before defeating that first boss, there's a wall stopping progress. Here's a couple screenshots to compare it. You also can't exit the boss room (or any boss room) until you collect the power-up it leaves.

There is also the advantage of being easier to hex-edit movie files if the format is more structured, at the expense of space. Usual rant about FCM goes here.

Gens Input Animator v2.1 This is a lot like the SNES9x Input Animator, so being familiar with that one will help use this one. Differences in the GMV format (compared to the SMV format) are what makes this utility behave a little differently. The biggest and most important difference is: This will always overwrite all 3 bytes of a frame that data is inserted on. The bytes to be written can now be toggled. Also, like before: Due to the immediate way this program changes data, it is strongly recommended to backup any file that you plan on opening with this program. Since Gens movies can either be of 2-player or 3-player format, this will be the determining factor in how many colors and spaces you have available for animating. This setting is moved to the main menu when a movie is open, because it typically should not be changed from its original value. I didn't do as much pre-release testing with this one, so if there are issues, let me know and I'll try to address them at some point. Have fun!

Here are my thoughts. 1) I'm excited that you're continuing this run. I think it's very fun to watch. 2) I don't know enough about the game on a TAS level to be helpful at all. 3) It took me like a million tries to figure out how to play that movie, but wow that was cool.

Kles's post was interesting for me. It reminded me of the phenomenon of a previously published movie having an effect on the publishability of a new movie. If aiming for speed, then all of these runs should be accepted and published, provided their technical quality is substantial. If aiming for entertainment, then new runs improving on less entertaining runs should not be accepted and published. But, these less entertaining runs are published. Yet, goals of the site as given by WhyAndHow are to "create art and provide entertainment." As mmbossman said, speed is a good way to provide movies like this with entertainment. So, why not publish other movies which are fast, but not as entertaining otherwise? In most cases, it seems that new runs have to satisfy both speed and entertainment requirements to be accepted and published. But this is not true for all cases, specifically, the movies which are obsoleting a movie that was published back in the times when any movie was published. Overall, that seems contradictory to me. Also, AKA, your self-proclaimed reasons for voting are inconsistent with the reason you referenced for your vote on this movie.

Ah, poop. I tried this strategy yesterday but it was the same speed. Turns out it actually wasn't the same speed, and I just made a calculation error. So I now have improved the last boss by 160 frames (1 less teleport). Thanks to DeHackEd for updating the submission file. DarkKobold, the worm moves slower or as fast as Jason does (I don't remember which right now) when almost dead, so either it would be a slower trip to the door, or it would be equal but with probably another point of damage taken. mmbossman, awesome idea for a drinking game :)

You get the same speed boost on the ground after going downhill - by not pressing forward on flat ground, the speed falls back gradually instead of being reduced to its flat-ground "maximum". It must be more noticeable during a jump, though. 00FF17AF = Horizontal momentum for side-scrolling stages.

Someone's got a grudge against me for like my last five submissions. My guess is BoltR, but that's not based on much concrete evidence. Whoever it is, I hope it makes you feel better. :) Edit: My guess was wrong. Apologies to BoltR.

I just added a link to 19.3 on Emulator Homepages. (Hopefully there aren't more files that need to be uploaded with it, if so please let me know what should be included and I'll update)

VBA 20's development introduced some new glitches: Bad frame advancing on GB games Another frame advance issue Frame count updating SGB Border graphical glitch Inability to distinguish emulator versions in header data Additionally, it has different timing, which we are being told is more correct. Not to discredit the developers, but SNES9x 1.51's new timing is (according to my admittedly un-bulletproof tests) actually less accurate. How do we know this method for VBA is more accurate? VBA 20 seemed to be put together quickly without testing and such, and was just accepted as the new one to use. Perhaps this wasn't the case. However, due to glitches like this, I don't feel like using the version, and that's why I've continued to use VBA 19 on my TASes. My point is, these bugs should be worked out before VBA 20 is treated as the "official" version to submit movies with. Until then, leave it in beta for people to test until the kinks are worked out.

This game makes a nice TAS to watch. Good graphics and sound, and the character's animation is nice to watch. Of course we have some useless girl thrown in the mix (lame), but so far things are looking great. That first boss especially always gave me trouble, it's good to see him derailed.

When a movie is judged on something so subjective, such as "entertainment value", then it's not surprising to me that most people will not like 100% of the choices made in the movie. What does surprise me is the posts which seem to say that we were "wrong" for not making the choices that he/she would have preferred. This game's variety is very deep, and many different runs could be done, showing off different aspects of the game. We can't please everybody with one run, and we know that. One individual viewer won't always be pleased with each run, and hopefully they know that, although some posts imply otherwise. Since everyone can't be pleased, the best thing to do is for the authors to go on their own sense of entertainment. The run will turn out best this way - if we tried to do what everyone else felt was entertaining, the run would be in a deadlock, and we wouldn't be personally as pleased with it, which would probably make us less enthused about what we're working on, and ultimately affect the final product. Criticism is welcome and for the most part has been fair. The run will be accepted/rejected based on the overall response of the community. But there is no correct choice to make when trying to be entertaining, so everyone with a shitty attitude similar to Kyrsimys's would be best to produce their own run which would follow the blueprint they think would be best for everyone. Also, I don't think this should obsolete the current run, as I believe that all runs of RCR so far have aimed for speed, even Sleepz's (despite popular consensus on this subject), and ours did not. Thanks to the majority of you for watching our project :)

Sonic 2 probably takes the cake on just straight-up-fun-to-play levels. Chemical Plant, Mystic Cave, Oil Ocean, and Metropolis are all excellent. Super Castlevania 4 is also packed with fun-to-play levels - courtyard, the mode 7 level, treasury, clock tower... Also, I hate Casino Night. It's literally the most annoying level in any Sonic game I've played. All I remember is wondering why my friends got to play Sonic that level, and got to waste minutes of my live jumping into the ultimately pointless slot machine over and over and over again. OH CRAP YOU GOT ROBOTNIKS. How surprising. Other fun levels: NES Blaster Master - Ice level (Area 6) NES Kirby's Adventure - Game Boy throwback (7-6) NES Mega Man 2 - Wily 1 NES Super Mario Bros. 3 - Pipe level with light bulb lifts (7-6) SNES Donkey Kong Country - Oil Drum Alley (I think, it's the first level of World 5) SNES Super Mario Kart - Rainbow Road SNES Super Metroid - Deep Norfair Genesis Sonic 3 - Ice Cap Zone Genesis Sonic & Knuckles - Lava Reef Zone N64 Goldeneye - Train N64 Starfox 64 - Zoness N64 Turok - Temple (Level 5) (edit: andrewg reminded me of DKC)

why was the return trip to Area 15 necessary?
Requirements for an open path to area 16 are (1) getting the communicator from area 15 (which requires the gun from area 12) and (2) beating area 13 to rescue Joe. Also I might have messed some of these numbers up.

Why not change the front page to say "List Bisqwit's recommended movies"?

Alrighty, here is a utility I wrote to address some of the common frustrations I find with FCM format. (1) I've experienced a few times where a reset is not placed at the beginning of the controller data on my FCM. This is troublesome because FCM is not erasing the savestate it automatically stores, even on a start-from-reset movie, is not reset, and sync could be affected (dirty SRAM). This also will not allow a movie to be submitted here (the submission page will give an error). (2) Speaking of that savestate, it's completely removable from the movie, and in most cases will not affect sync. One counterexample I can think of is Kirby's Adventure. For that movie I left the savestate in, but set it to all zeros. (3) The length of the movie is stored in several places, and the one that the submission system looks at here does not need to coincide with the actual length of controller data to play in FCEU correctly. FCM Fix - v4 This utility has a few different checks available. Savestate removal - Remove an embedded savestate from an FCM if it is marked to start from reset or power-on. File sizes usually drop by about 80k. Reset check - Verifies that a reset or power-cycle command is at the beginning of the controller data if the movie is marked to start from reset. (Without this command, a submission will fail the checks of the TASVideos submission script) Also gives the option to change a reset to a power-cycle. Validate length - Compares the length stated in the movie metadata with the actual length of the controller data, and corrects the metadata if it is inconsistent. (This is important because the TASVideos submission script gets the movie time from this possibly faulty value)

You're a better man than I am, Bisqwit. You've reminded me of how much growing up I still have to do. I'm not going to post for a while, and I hope that when I do, I can avoid saying harsh things. I've tried this before, but eventually failed at it. For this, I too am sorry.

I typed that because I feel sorry for those who try to reason with Phil. I have experience in wasting my time trying to communicate with him. Perhaps it should have been PM to Upthorn and Xkeeper rather than a public post. Way to ignore my claim and respond with your own accusation. But, talking to you in PM is a waste of time. You see my claims and do one of the two things I listed above. I don't remember saying "oh, you're doing fine" in our recent PMs about the SDW submission. I remember saying you were an asshole for telling members of the community that they weren't needed and that it would push away the people who produce your content. You responded with

Great ideals, except that you are attempting to force others' hands to redo work by rejection, and forcing others to feel they MUST do it, by pointing out that they are replacable. Of course you can do that; you're the admin, blah blah. But your attitude conveys that you see the members of this community as resources instead of people, and replacable at any time - except for a select few. That pisses me off greatly, and there's no "fix" for it, no matter how many ways you ask. It's hopeless. Are we all replacable? Yes, very much so. The concept of TAS will live on. But as I told you in PM, reminding people of this fact in your position is a straight dickhead move. Add all this to the recent attitude you've contracted since xebra annoyed you, and you have a recipe for "nothing's getting better". EDIT: And yes, I'm sure you can find a PM from me at some point saying that I can't think of anything to do to help, but it's this recent issue that have really put me at odds with you, not previous ones.

You're warning me for accusing you of favoritism? Well that's a new reaction. Usually you either (1) get quite angry, as noted by your cute red avatar, or wanting to punch me in face™, or (2) explain the very specific scenario's behavior away with semantics and contrived conditions that ultimately don't add up when you look at the general behavior. If anyone besides Phil had gotten into this argument, you would not have done a thing and everyone here knows it. Of course you'll try to explain it away with stuff about common enemy, "gang" mentality, poor Phil can't express himself well, blah blah blah blah. It doesn't matter, there are too many examples to ignore. If you have to ban me in order to feel like you are fair, then do so. After all, I'm completely replacable, right?. I only ask that you make me a nice "Goodbye JXQ" thread, praising everything I've done and ignoring my shortcomings completely. Since you are completely not biased, I trust this will not be an issue, thanks.
