For the record, the Japanese version is as fast as the US version. The only thing changed is the final level.

Actually, after seeing my new video twice now, I think the character looks a bit ugly in the Japanese version (less detailed, no throat, no knee, bad walking animation). I'd like to know what everyone else thinks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMYI-vU3HCI US version 3:40 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sStOmk0Su7I JP version 3:29 What do you think looks better? I don't mind switching back (keep the current vbm) if everyone agrees on one version...

In case my question went unnoticed, did the crackling sound get fixed? About TAS Input, it should be made so boxes are checked when buttons on the keyboard are pressed, and unchecked when they are not. For now, I'm interested in it for being more desync-proof than the usual way to TAS but it is too impractical to use right now. It would be more convenient if it had control stick graphics to click on, in my opinion. I think there has been something like that for Mupen too.

I'm still on 7323, but I don't think anything has changed. You select "start recording" in the dropdown menu. Dolphin will now start up the last game you played. Every savestate you make will record your button sequence (meaning you can close Dolphin, then re-open it and load the savestate to continue TASing). When finished, select "export recording" or "stop" and it should ask you where to save your DTM (dolphin tas movie). This is your recording that you can play back in the emulator. Why can't you play it back? Black screen would suggest the emulator is paused. Unpause it using Play/Pause (in non-frame advance mode). Also note that Dolphin will not save your settings or memory cards in the DTM, so you may need to back up your memory card file. What do you mean by TASing with as little savestates as possible?

<mugg> is it dolphin not emulating the load times or the avi only having 1~10 frames (when it should have 400 frames)? <mugg> dolphin emulates ssbm's and tony hawk ug's load times, but only records 1 frame for it in avi

I provided a new vbm in the submission text. The ROM version was changed from Kung-Fu Master (U) to Spartan X (J). Feel free to encode/publish/judge now.

Just noticed a possible improvement that I will implement in v3 of the run (if I make it). In the Japanese version the final boss appears right at the start of level 6 with no other enemies appearing which is about 13 seconds faster. I didn't notice any other version differences, aside from a boss attack that deals more damage if I'm not mistaken. I'm sorry I didn't find this sooner, and I'm sorry I can't redo this run as I will lack the time and especially motivation in the near future. But I may do it someday. EDIT: It turns out the run syncs on the (J) ROM up till the end of stage 3. Maybe I can get the remaining levels to sync as well, so until further notice please do not make serious encodes yet. I provided a Youtube link in the submission text.

Problems: Events needs a horrid amount of luck-manipulation. Probably you will have to re-enter a match/event (and stay there possibly for minutes) only so you can get the perfect luck for the next event - even if you throw the event match order around, it would suck to TAS. Imagine you will have to use Luigi, Peach, Game&Watch for HRC and aren't allowed to use cheats, it would suck majorly to do the strat over and over until you get lucky. More than a half of the event matches haven't been TASed yet. Those that have been TASed were made on different dolphin versions, with different settings, or the DTMs may not even exist or the authors may not reply/agree to provide the DTM. It will be impossible to splice any DTMs. Also, I'm not sure if the Masterhand glitch in event 4 works, last time I tried dolphin froze. I hope that covers it. A TAS of Btt/HRC/Events would be great, but it would be a hell for whoever is TASing it.

Yeah, I'm aware that can't be the screen position. I couldn't find anything better than that and it still behaves well enough for my purposes.

fastest time and glitchfest more or less contradict themselves. I would need to make it a priority to show off those glitches while aiming for fastest time as my second priority. I'm not sure if every glitch is even worthwhile to show... If I ever TAS this again, I'd like to go for fastest ingame time instead.
those where you warp from the left edge of the screen to the right edge.
I already tried it, it's useless. You can't beat the boss properly while offscreen.

I thought we already tried this, You can't skip the intro stage by pipe glitch...
Yes, somehow during testing, I didn't test moving to the left like Tompa mentioned. Sorry about that.

That's, for a change, is a good idea. Same with HRC and Btt. The problem would be you would have to redo everything just to include an improvement for one single character/event. On the other hand, maybe DTM input can be hexed. In Kirby Super Star it's a greater problem, since any% and 100% WIPs aim to complete all modes in one movie. Nothing can be hexed at all. Progress is so slow we still didn't get anything done...

I'd like to see a run that gets only the Diskun trophy (get all the bonuses) as fast as possible.
You would need to play through the singleplayer modes several times for this. And don't forget the ones like "used continues". I doubt this would be very interesting.
If I recall correctly, there is a bonus that you can get by having Celebi appear. From Smashwiki:
Celebi is very special among the Pokémon who can be summoned. First of all, it must be unlocked; it won't appear out of a Poké Ball until all playable characters and stages have been unlocked, the Sound Test has been unlocked, all Event Matches have been completed, and Score Display has been unlocked.
Have fun TASing that.

Found a possible improvement for the glitched run. In the first level, take a shell, approach a pipe and throw the shell in a way that it will kill you while entering the pipe. Re-enter the level and finish it early.

I can't appreciate those multi-game runs, but I really liked the detailed info you put in your video, and the input animations. I'm not voting.

This.
Ditto.
Worst idea ever. Not only would it force the TASer to lose his sanity by going through modes over and over, stocking up on coins and manipulating luck, it would also be impossible to acquire ALL trophies anyway, and the result wouldn't look interesting in the least. I don't agree with the idea of using Kirby to acquire enemy powers either. I agree, however, that some lesser-used characters should get more attention. For example Ness (double jumps, yoyo glitching)! Mario also looks cool when TASed.

I tried making a short HD encode test with SSBM, using r7323. There are many, many problems I stumbled upon. - When dumping the AVI with ffdshow h264, and opening it with avisynth (avisource), the colors in the video will be messed up. Dumping with lagarith works fine, apparently, but Youtube doesn't seem to accept it. - The resolution Dolphin dumps at depends on its current window size. I realized only very late I had to check "Auto" next to the resolution setting. - After playing back a DTM, and then playing it back again, Dolphin sometimes randomly cuts the end off, ending playback earlier than desired. After this happened, I took the original DTM from a backup folder and Dolphin would still end playback earlier... - Dolphin seems to start dumping frames at a random frame (if "Dump Frames" was checked at power-on). - Sometimes Dolphin would ignore "Dump Frames" altogether. EDIT: Or it will start dumping frames though "Dump Frames" wasn't checked. - When I dumped another AVI with ffdshow h264 lossless, the video would be cropped! Only the top-left corner was visible. Also, every subsequent AVI I dumped, regardless of what compression I use (normal h264, lagarith, uncompressed) would be cropped too. Even if I restart Dolphin. EDIT: New info: Dolphin uses the resolution the window was at prior to running the game. So if the window was 320x240, it will use that resolution, then switch to 640x480 and as a result it will crop the window. If the initial window size is greater than the resolution Dolphin switches to, it will crash. To prevent this, you can uncheck the "Render to main window" option.

I know there's at least one other movie on the site (but I cannot remember which) that does antics of some sort (a minigame?) on the credits.

VBA24-alpha is different from VBA24-m. Sorry for the misunderstanding. VBA24-m is VBA20 merged with VBA-m and it fixes things in many games. VBA-24-alpha on the other hand is just upgraded VBA-23 I think. http://code.google.com/p/vba-rerecording/downloads/list

Has there been a fix for the crackling sound? Noticeable in the middle of this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNpao1f5z9Q
