In my opinion this feels like throwing the any% run with a 100% run of a game together. While I think that in this special case mode A and mode B in one movie wouldn't hurt, the playaround should stand alone. The playarounds have been strongly distinguished from the real speedruns in the past anyway, right? Isn't there even a category or tag for those?

I asked this on IRC yesterday, but there didn't seem to be an easy way to do this... The idea is to compare two ROMs to see what changes where made between two versions of the same game (what is different between v1.0 and v1.1 of the same game?), similar to diffs in wiki pages. I got this idea long ago, when I was reading this: http://starmen.net/mother2/gameinfo/antipiracy/ I recently found a cool bug in Super Mario Land which worked in v1.0 but not in v1.1 and perhaps this could have been found a lot sooner. I have a lot of games I would want to test for this... A problem would be to analyse the code and to actually comprehend the difference which I don't think I'm really good at. Well, thoughts?

If you mean an input file that completes multiple TASes like the quadruple megaman run, then let me say this: There is a testrun which completes Super Mario Bros Super Mario Bros 2 Super Mario Bros 2 (J) Super Mario Bros 3 at the same time. See here: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=221418#221418 (Also, just for your information, there is a Megaman 1-6 test run) I don't like these runs, but it's still somewhat interesting.

1.)     v>     v>     v>     >... 2.)     v>     >     v>     >     v>     >... 3.)     >     >     > Each of these movie files is 15 frames long. Mario is running right, but different directional buttons are pressed. By observing the value at 0x0400 (X-Subpixel Position address) I can see the following.
Subpixel value->  Frame 0   Frame 15    Frame 20

Movie 1 160 224 96
Movie 2 160 240 112
Movie 3 160 32 160 + 256 (1 pixel)

As you can see, movie 1 and movie 2 managed to cover more distance but somehow lost it by frame 20 to movie 3. On movie 3, Mario gets ahead one pixel (even though 0x0086 (X-Position) states the same value for all thee movies at frame 20) and the speed address states values on the range of 38 ~ 40 for movie 1 and movie 2 whereas it states only 40 for movie 3. Either I found a way to temporarily cover slightly more distance or I missed something and movie 1 and movie 2 are both slower, even at frame 15.

Nice wall glitching there. Keep it up! Also, I'd like to see a 100% as well.

To be honest, I liked this movie. As it was said, it feels like a video at a low frame-rate and it also feels fastpaced. Even though it's probably not the best run ever made I think it was a nice watch. About the system being used (NDS): I think a run should be done on the system which the game first appeared on (PC). If that is not doable I would be in favor of a system which is very close or does feel very close to the original system, like maybe PSX or Genesis (I don't know which systems the game appeared on)... The NDS having two screens kind of bugs me. I just wanted to bring this up but as this wasn't published, this point isn't of much importance anyway.

Is there a particular reason why v1.1 is being used instead of v1.0?

I've found out that you can use ffdshow to directly use the avisynth script to cut away the lower screen (in other words, you are recording a single screen because the avisynth script is being used as you record your video). Here is how I did it. Use 'ffdshow video codec' (you need to download & install it) Configure it: H.264, quality: 100 On the left side under 'input', check image processing and configure it: On the left side, check 'avisynth' and paste this into its field
Crop(0,0,0,-192)
This seems to be less of a hassle than using Virtualdub but I don't know how reliable that is. The screen seems to be mirrored or rotated and I haven't succeeded in rotating it back using
Rotate(180.0)
Also, sound might be out of sync... I can't really tell, it needs more testing. This would be the easiest solution to straightly record a single screen, but I strongly recommend using the Avisynth script in Virtualdub after the initial encode.

Record a new video with desmume. Download & install Avisynth, open a text editor and save this as .avs:
AviSource("yourclip.avi").ConvertToYUY2.Crop(0, 0, -0, -192)
Open it in Virtualdub. Go to Video->Compression and choose MPEG-4 Xvid (H.264 is good too, but I haven't used it ever. You need to install one of these. Be sure to configure them for highest quality). Save the new video. Should do the job...

Here is a WIP of my upcoming new any%. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/565683136/knid%20mugg.vbm This is of much higher technical quality than my first attempt which was rushed and unoptimized. This movie completes the first 3 worlds and saves 3015 frames. Also, here's a useful lua script for TASing: http://pastebin.com/y7FHHFD1 I like to leave projects alone for awhile after posting WIPs, so expect me to work on something else for now, maybe Kirby's Dreamland or something?

I watched the first two YT videos and I think this was pretty good. It wasn't outright sloppy and he used some glitches. The hack isn't very good though. The reuse of stages/music from the original Megaman games makes this hack seem boring. The run doesn't seem very special to me.

I've just watched this comparison video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FX6dgkn5EQQ I can't spot any significant difference here aside from the graphics looking more dynamic on PS. From what I heard, PSX TASing still has some problems (desyncs, emulation glitches) and I'm even less familiar with PSX than with N64. So that's why I'm a little skeptic here... Having read through the last posts I'm saying it would be nice if Spider-Waffle posted his unfinished WIP (even if it got cut off). I wonder if he went for all the goals or only the fastest ones, because 22 seconds in Warehouse is pretty fast!

Hey, just saying I plan to run THPS 2. I'm going to complete all the goals in every level. I made a few attempts already, but I ended up being ineffective and slow. I was having some trouble route-planning the first level... http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/8659/posting12.png Are there any unfinished WIPs? Any advice? Thanks in advance.

This is one of many gameboy games I played back when I was a child. On a field, water is flowing from a starting point and the player has to put in pipe tiles so the water can flow properly. The objective is to let the water cover a certain number of tiles in order to proceed to the next level. Someone made a TAS and I thought I'd post it. part 1 (Stage 1 ~ 12) part 2 (Stage 13 ~ 24) part 3 (Stage 25 ~ 36)

While the Japanese version can save a margin of 5 minutes, I don't see what makes that version superior to the US version. Sure it's nice to have a final time that is the lowest possible there is, but I must admit I still prefer English language for nostalgic reasons. I can read and I know what's going on. When I see the Japanese text it somehow feels very different and foreign... it's hard to describe for me. It doesn't feel like watching a good OoT TAS and feeling nostalgic. Also, this comes to my mind here: http://tasvideos.org/1968S.html The Japanese version of Link's Awakening was used to save text scrolling time. However, this submission was rejected. Not that I want to aim at something here, it's just mere coincidence I wanted to point out.

I cant watch that. But it now sets a goal to reach at least. :)
Except he used the Japanese version and I heard text scrolls a lot faster in that version. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atCLqVMsAxc

A new TAS appeared on nicovideo. More parts to come! I never played the game, so I can't judge the technical quality.

No, boosting stache would only make sense if used to get more money when it comes to selling items or buying. But unlike Superstar Saga you have plenty of items on your way and hardly buy anything. I don't know if there are good items to purchase though... boosting stache only to increase the frequency or power of lucky hits doesn't sound good.

I know this game. This is an okay TAS, but it wasn't very entertaining to watch due to the slow pace (which is the game's fault). Isn't there a better port for it like SNES or Genesis?

old post: I planned to do Jet and Suplex, but those aren't very interesting to me. There's an issue with luck-manipulation with Suplex (Bugzzy) that stopped my progress. I'm currently not TASing anything in Kirby USDX, but that might change sometime. And maybe I'd like to try a more interesting helper like fire or fighter? In any case, I don't like to overlap with other's projects, but on the other hand I don't want to claim certain helpers which in the end won't be done due to my laziness... Well, that's all I can say now. I'll contact ISM and WaddleDX if I plan to do another HelperToHero TAS.
