No. That's what they're water currents for. However, sliding through water is equally fast as jumping in the air, and suffers less from pushback when touching the water while jumping, so it's sometimes still the more efficient option (or sometimes tied) by a very slight amount.

Since a few controversial submission judgments a month and a half ago, we've been discussing between several staff members about changing the rules for the Vault to be more open for sports games. We have come to an agreement to a new amendment to the Vault rules specifically for sports games. The rule will open up only for certain types of sports games and submissions. Sports games that make trivial runs, do not provide useful speed records, or otherwise are considered unsuitable for publication are still rejected. The new rule is as follows:
  • Sports games are allowed for the Vault under certain criteria only:
    • Team-based sports and sports running with a fixed time, such as baseball, football, soccer, or basketball are not eligible.
      • Games featuring multiple successive sports, such as Track & Field and Olympics, are eligible as long as one of the sports fits the criteria.
    • The game must have a meaningful ending point or meaningful completion criteria.
      • For example, many sports games have career, storyline, tournament or season modes that end with an ending or credit sequence. These would count as meaningful endings.
      • In sports that depend on a variety of environments or situations, such as golf, completion can be defined by clearing every environment or situation in the game.
      • TASes that only clear a single event without reaching a meaningful ending to the game are not eligible.
    • The run must not be seen as trivial.
      • If a run consists of doing a trivial strategy, made only nontrivial by having to do it over the course of several rounds, it will still be judged as trivial. For example, bowling games where the player gets a strike with ten pins every time.
    • Sports games in the Vault are restricted to one game per series per platform. For example, PGA Tour Golf III on the Sega Genesis may obsolete PGA Tour Golf II on the Sega Genesis. Which game obsoletes which is decided by which game makes a more technically impressive run, as decided by a judge.
    • For games with different characters/groups/countries with different statistics, only the fastest run is accepted. Runs using suboptimal characters are not accepted.
The following submissions will be re-judged based on the new Vault rules. #726: Acmlm's NES Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf in 08:26.00 #1201: Neofix's Genesis Side Pocket in 03:17.55 #2411: reiki's SNES Sanrio World Smash Ball! in 25:14.65 #5065: dekutony's Vboy Nester's Funky Bowling in 01:09.26 #5087: Fog's Wii Gummy Bears Minigolf in 12:27.13 If there is another rejected submission you think should be re-judged in order to take into account this new rule change, post it in this thread.

Something I noticed recently: Why are we calling these games by the English name, but the branches/characters by their Japanese names? Right now we have publications listed like 'Mega Man & Bass "Rockman"', which just seems weird and inconsistent. If we are calling the game "Mega Man & Bass", then the characters would logically also be referred to as "Mega Man" and "Bass", instead of "Rockman" and "Forte" as they are currently.

So I decided to look into this game recently (good job EgixBacon for calling it over a year in advance, lol) and decided to make a WIP for it. Rockman is almost definitely faster than Forte in this game, if only for the intro boss. Forte is extremely inefficient at boss-killing without special weapons, and the intro boss alone would probably take over a minute. The route I'm taking for the 'robot masters' is Aircon Man > Konro Man > Dangan Man > Komuso Man. The only weapon that's really important is that of Aircon Man (which is broken against most bosses), and Konro Man's weapon can also be useful in other circumstances (such as the Komuso Man miniboss). The fastest RTA I've seen does Dangan Man second to use his weapon for some enemies in Konro Man's stage, but I don't think it'll be worthwhile to use it in a TAS. So the complete route is: Intro Stage > Aircon Man > Konro Man > Dangan Man > Komuso Man > Clock Men > Compas Man > R-Shadow. Link to video User movie #30941730322035645

I agree with TheMG2, we don't need to make a "war" situation out of this, and we don't need to turn this into a them-vs.-us debate where the TASVideos and Super Metroid communities start strawmanning each other and their viewpoints. Besides being unnecessary and offensive, it's also flat out wrong. Let people have their opinions without attaching labels to them, please. As far as I'm concerned, the Super Metroid community can determine whether they consider the overflow glitch a major glitch or not for the purposes of low% or any% no-major-glitch runs. Then we can probably go along with that, and in any case we'll see about it if/when runs that use or don't use these glitches are submitted here.

Just because the overflow glitch is particularly influential in normal play doesn't mean that it cannot still be considered a major glitch for both speedrunning and TASing purposes. Keep in mind that most categories, particularly low% and any%, already are bound to "no major glitches" as a rule, because otherwise they would be 2% ACE or 6% X-Ray glitch runs instead of the current 13%/14% and 18%/19% runs (for low% and any% respectively). Considering that even in a speedrunning or TAS setting, the overflow glitch substantially affects the rest of the game from where it is executed, there definitely are fair reasons to consider it a major glitch for the purposes of these categories.

No. Work on and submit the fastest low% run, let it obsolete the currently published runs, and that's it. It's absurd that we have two low% runs published already, there's literally no good reason to keep upholding this "tradition".
I'm not sure if they should go with the fastest per say. This ammunition underflow seems like abusing the percentage counter. IDK if that'd be the faster of the two proposed branches but it sounds a little lame in a low% setting.
To me it looks like it doesn't abuse the percentage counter. It has nothing to do with item collection or the way items are being collected (which is the real relevant part for most low% or 100% runs). It just underflows the number of missiles/super missiles Samus can fire, not the (intended) maximum capacity or how many super/missile packs have been collected.

I figure I'll give my take on this as well. This is a pretty good improvement. It's clear nymx, EternisedDragon and everyone else paid good attention to the issues of the last submission. Optimization looks pretty good overall (although some users still found some sketchy areas), there is actual relevant information in the submission text now, there is a bit less copied input (although some parts like cpadolf's first half of Ceres are still not appropriately credited or mentioned), and we get to see (and read about) a few new fun tricks as usual. However, the greatest issue - the one I rejected last year's run for - has gone completely unaddressed. This run was received slightly better due to improved optimization and the other aforementioned things, but the viewer response is still not looking good. The vote ratings went up from 33% last year to about 40% for this submission, which is still way too little. The category still is seen as poor or arbitrary by many people for many different reasons. Some dislike the fact that the run doesn't collect all items along the way; others just find traversing rooms for the sake of traversing rooms a pointless or arbitrary goal in general, considering the game internally does not keep track of the number or percentage of rooms visited. Either way, compared to all the other branches this game has (any%, 100%, low%, RBO, ACE, and then some), this category falls flat and is just considered to be not very interesting. The bottom line is - it's just considered a niche and uninteresting category here. I'm sure there's an audience for this run among Super Metroid enthusiast communities/sites like Deer Tier, but for TASVideos this category just does not cut it.

Bumping to make clear that, unless/until further notice, the proposed date will be the one in effect for the PCSX-rr and PSXjin deprecation. Like other systems pending deprecation, continuances can be requested in this thread. To be clear: You have until December 31 2016 23:59 UTC to complete any runs you have started using PCSX-rr or PSXjin, no exceptions will be made, unless you have been granted a continuance on your existing run. If you feel you have a long run that already had a lot of work put into it, and will need a while to be completed, you may request a continuance in this thread. We will accept continuances until December 15 2016 23:59 UTC. This means that users have, as of this day, 8 months to submit their PCSX-rr or PSXjin movies, or 7.5 months to request a continuance otherwise.

Considering the same developers had already made several previous games with scrolling (such as Mario 3 and Mario 4), I'm pretty sure they already knew how to implement scrolling. They just opted not to put it in this game for some reason.

You're using gui.register(), which has no guarantee of being called every frame (especially not if frame skipping is on). Try putting the stylus function in a while loop with emu.frameadvance() instead, or try using emu.registerbefore() instead.

I ran some full game testruns for both games. Of course, being testruns, they are not quite optimized, the main menus aren't even TASed or done fast at all, and I do some other things that lose time now and then. I set the difficulty to 'hard' for both games. Link to video Link to video Mario 3 .bk2 Mario 4 .bk2 Oddly enough, Mario 4 resets after stage 20, although there should still be a final boss and credit sequence after that. I don't know why it's resetting the way it is - I think it's a game crash, perhaps caused by an emulation error. Some other notes:
  • Getting a fire flower quickly is really convenient to dispose of enemies that get in your way. Enemies sometimes are really hard if not impossible to dodge without losing a ton of time. However, mushroom/fire flower blocks also tend to be quite out of the way (usually costing several seconds at least), so finding good locations to pick up fire flowers can be tricky.
  • About half the stages have one pipe that leads to a bonus area. Sometimes they're faster to take them, but more often than not, they progress you less forward than the time you spend walking in the bonus area itself.
  • It's very important to keep up momentum without having to bump into walls. Stopping or turning around will kill horizontal speed while jumping until you've run for a certain amount of time again.
  • Lag optimization is also pretty important in some stages with many enemies (such as the fire levels in Mario 4). Note that the internal lag counter doesn't catch this.
  • Music is randomized during the black screen before every stage or screen transition, and can be influenced with random input.
  • Surprisingly, given the games' bootleg status, they have tons of little secrets like invisible blocks, off-screen mushroom blocks and aforementioned pipes.

There is no 0.9.12 release as of yet. If anybody is currently talking about "0.9.12" versions, they probably are talking about interim builds.

Yeah, 20XX Tournament Edition is notorious for having random bugs (often related to/caused by its replay system), which is why no tournaments actually use 20XX TE. The rest of the bugs are either just Pokémon Stadium stage collision being jank, or well known already (like the Yo-Yo Glitch). By the way, regarding the Ice Climbers, I did actually have a short test with Icies TASing (in Classic Mode) several months ago, but I never got very far with it, and then lost the file. It's nice to see someone else picking up on the crazy potential that the Icies have when TASing. Just look up "Insane Wobbles plays" to see what is possible already in real time, let alone in TAS settings.

I added some of the suggested entries. I also moved out all video modules and replaced them with thumbnails that link to their respective videos, so the page loads far faster and runs more smoothly now. (I also did the same to Obsoletely Fabulous). I also reorganized the page a bit. April Fools gets its own set of separate tabs now, because it was getting quite large. (By the way, I'd like to make clear that any editor can add runs to Gruefood Delight - so if any editor has suggestions for additions to the page, they can feel free to add them themselves. If you take a look at the submission itself, Krazy Ace was actually initially accepted to Moons. The submission voting was actually quite positive as well, good enough audience reception for Moons in my opinion. I'm not entirely sure why it got pushed down to Vault, there's nothing that really explains why except for a couple comments at the end of the submission thread that just say it happened.
It was initially accepted to Moons, and later on was (mistakenly) demoted to Vault due to poor entertainment ratings.

You get used to it. Many people out there testify that they got used to it, and say that they can play your regular old FPS games (modded to support VR) for hours without problems. They don't need any "extensive modifications" for anything. Sure, there may be a percentage of people who never get used to it, but is that really a reason to not give anybody even the choice? To deliberately not add support to existing games? To deliberately remove the option from those who would like to try and who, potentially, would get quickly used to it and be just fine? That doesn't make any kind of sense. It's like saying that because some people get sick while riding a car, then no cars should ever be built and nobody should be given the option to drive cars. That's just nonsense. The "play by physically walking in your room" game mechanic has no future. Why? Well, I propose a test: Take any game you like to play for hours. A game playable with a gamepad. Or if you have a handheld console, that's fine too. Now start playing the game, but standing up. Don't sit down. Play standing up. Let's see how long you last. My point exactly.
It seems kind of disingenuous to say about VR-enhanced FPS games that you get used to it, and then later on in the same post dismiss standing up/walking while gaming (with VR) like that isn't possible to get used to. If people can get used to having their eyesight replaced with a set of screens for hours, they can get used to standing or walking for a few hours. It's not some revolutionary new activity, tons of people such as warehouse workers or office clerks do it routinely for 8 hours a day. If you can't stand around or walk a bit for at least one hour at a time, then you're not in good physical shape. Not to mention that even for gamers that aren't in good physical shape, game designers would obviously account for the added physical exertion and encourage players to play shorter sessions or take breaks more often. Plenty of video games already do this (in the interest of combating video game addiction or pleasing moral guardians, whichever way you like to look at it), I'm sure VR game developers can and/or will take into account the extra physical exertion and do the same thing with their games.

I actually decided to try this out. I played Super Smash Bros. Melee for one hour and fifteen minutes, standing up the whole time, and had absolutely no problems with it. I could have gone for another hour (if I had the time for that), and even if it would get tiring after a while, a short break of 10 minutes or so is all you would really need to get going again. (Speaking of Melee, one top Melee player (Hungrybox) is actually known for occasionally playing matches standing up, so this isn't a foreign concept even in competitive gaming environments).
