[23:11:27] <Masterjun> I don't know why Mario Maker is such a big deal now, I mean, with SMW, Nintendo released a game that could not only create new levels, it could even create new games!

This TAS was excellent. Thanks for making it! Any plans to do SMB2?
We have actually started a new SMB2 TAS. The new one takes advantage of the fact that the PAL version can be played at 60Hz instead of 50Hz by holding B at startup, and by playing the PAL version at 60Hz, the monkey gains more height from clipping because of how the developers decided to compensate for the difference between NTSC 60 and PAL 50. The physics is rendered once every frame instead of constantly, so they gave you more speed and height out of clips and certain movements, so playing PAL at 60Hz instead of 50Hz leads to more speed in most places, making PAL objectively superior for in-game time for almost every level.
Hm, this kind of decision has been contentious in the past. Might want to bring it up with the judges to make certain it's a "kosher" way to run the game. In any event, good luck!
As per the movie rules on NTSC/PAL, runs using PAL 60 are allowed. Generally PAL 60 is recommended against, in favor of the USA version, but considering the advantages the PAL version has in this case, it certainly can be used here.

lsnes is known to be more stable than BizHawk, and doesn't have any of the issues BizHawk is known to have in certain cases (such as yours). I don't see why you're considering BizHawk with all your issues, but not lsnes. It may be a little different, but should definitely be workable. Regarding your question regarding acceptability:
  1. First of all, snes9x-rr as a whole is deprecated and pending non-acceptability as a whole. Even if I said you could use it, that could be reversed tomorrow, theoretically speaking.
  2. If there are any file format changes to newer .smv movie files and the site doesn't support them, don't expect any support to happen.
  3. The second link you posted links to interim builds. Submissions that only sync on interim builds are not accepted on TASVideos with a few exceptions (Dolphin, select vba-rr revisions). So no, runs made on that are not acceptable. Also, they explicitly say "do not use this for TASing" - first red flag should be right there.
  4. The first link is EmuCR, whose builds are unofficial and tend to be interim builds (this was brought up with a BizHawk build from there once). I wouldn't recommend using it, although I would not recommend it for reasons 1 and 2 anyway. If it is the closest thing to an official snes9x-rr 1.5.3 we're ever getting, you might be able to get away with it, (if you don't run into issues with points 1 and 2), but if an official release exists, no.
  5. I can't stress enough that lsnes or BizHawk are far superior choices, particularly in terms of active development and emulation accuracy, two very important factors in regards to site support. We are not going to support snes9x-rr forever, so we very much recommend against using it if you want to guarantee that TASVideos supports/accepts your run.
I hope this answers your question well enough.

I merged the "ask an atheist" thread into this topic - I don't think the forum needs multiple threads to argue about differences in religion (or lack thereof) - this religious debate thread does that well enough already. Please keep up your discussion in this topic.

I'm writing this topic because I'm seeing a lot going on in recent days, where multiple argumentative debates turn sour or unproductive needlessly because of some people in the arguments who seem to have no interest in any sort of a friendly debate, and instead opt to attack the poster, fling around insults, or all-around do things that cause argument topics to crash down to a point where nobody will be any wiser of it. I do not intend to single out any single person who has been posting in argumentative topics recently, but if you find you recognize your behavior in this topic, chances are you may want to listen to some of the advice that may be given in this topic. So let's come up with a few guidelines for debating, so that we may strive for a healthier debating environment in the TASVideos forums.
  1. Debate the message, not the poster. If you disagree with someone's post, or aim to disprove someone's message, that is certainly fine - that is exactly what debate is for! But it doesn't mean it's necessary to attack the poster for writing a message or having a certain belief. Do have some respect for the opposing party's viewpoint, even if you consider it wrong or misguided, and do not use it as a reason to insult the user. In other words, pit topics against each other, not people.
  2. Do not wind yourself up about what other people post. I've seen multiple discussions derail recently because some people invest too much emotion in the topic, and this can get in the way of rational behavior or rational discussion. If you find yourself winding up too much because of an argument you are involved in, leave the debate, take a break, or at least try to keep your head cool before you post again.
  3. Corollarily, and even more importantly, do not write debate posts with the intent to wind other people up. In less civil terms, this is known as baiting, trolling or shitposting, and it is absolutely inappropriate conduct. Purposefully dragging down discussion topics can be grounds for a ban. Do not sink yourself to this level.
  4. Refrain from insulting altogether. Related to points 1 and 3 but I feel it bears special mention. There is not a single reason in any discussion topic to have any need to insult any user you disagree with. Insults do nothing but bring down the quality of the debate, and only serve to instigate further back-and-forth insults and reinforce mutual dislike. If you have to use insults, you are not winning any argument, not even if your viewpoint technically is correct.
I'm certain there's a lot more that can be said about this, but I believe this should be a reasonable start. I hope we can from now on cut down on the number of troublesome debates filled with personal remarks and issues, and create a friendlier debating environment overall.

I've already given my (brief) take on this in the RotJ submission topic:

By default, that would be the hardest difficulty because those are obviously more impressive to complete, but it definitely does not always apply. I don't know why people are making such a big issue out of this. We get a more interesting run this way, so why force the change?
That's my general take on the subject. The best choice is what makes the best runs, which sometimes (usually) is the hardest difficulty, but in some cases it's not. If choosing a higher difficulty prohibits using certain TAS tricks like damage-taking strategies (because of reduced player HP/increased enemy damage) or only makes boss battles more repetitive (because of reduced player damage/increased enemy HP), then choosing an easier difficulty could be preferable. EDIT: What may also need to be taken into account is whether the opportunity of more damage boosting strategies would outclass the harder mode's greater emphasis on health management. This might be a contentious issue. One point I do believe should be discussed is the enforceability of the guideline as it currently stands. As Samsara said, sometimes runs are rejected for not using the hardest difficulty, and sometimes they are not. Currently the difficulty "rule" is only a guideline so it need not be enforced in its current state. However, we'll probably want to handle this more sensibly than "sometimes do enforce it, sometimes don't". An easy way out would be not enforcing the guideline at all (keeping it as a guideline), but I'm not sure that's a very good idea as it would in a way encourage TASers to use easy difficulty levels to breeze through the game more easily, cheapening the experience of watching the TAS. Personally, I think a better solution would be to enforce playing on the highest difficulty, unless a good case can be made for an easier difficulty run that it would make for a better watch than a highest-difficulty run. Runs that use easier difficulties without good reason would be rejected. I think this is what we already have been doing, but having it fixed on paper as a rule might be good. On the other hand, it might also be considered too restrictive. Thoughts?

If it's not going to have significant impact on run gameplay, then PAL won't be accepted. Skipping a few dialogues doesn't sound as nearly enough of a difference, and a shorter ending doesn't seem like a relevant difference.
Warepire wrote:
If PAL is faster, then it definitely qualifies as a reason to use PAL.
Just being faster is not enough reason to use PAL. Even PAL Super Mario Bros. is faster than NTSC due to broader application of the flagpole glitch, and that is not going to replace the NTSC standard either.

In an ideal world, it would not be necessary, but we don't live in an ideal world, so unverified stuff goes all over the net. So having some verification indication that your ROM is a good one is helpful.

This topic puzzles me. Here you have been over the past several days, deliberately stirring up shit and shitposting, smugly admitting to it, and now you have been continuing doing basically the same thing for a few more days and now you're blaming us for "stressing you out". Have you, ALAKTORN, ever considered that the only person at fault for your problems right now is you, yourself? Please try looking into a mirror once, because some serious self-reflection is needed here. The reason things got to the point where this topic was made, is your own behavior, not anyone else's - they were reactionary at best.

I am going to be 100% honest, I think the best thing you can do right now is to take a few days off, be calm and silent and then whenever you feel like it, return to the site. A lot of people undergo stressful times. Tasvideos is probably contributing to your current situation but I bet your current personal life also affects it.
Re: this post, normally I'd agree with giving it a few days of rest, but considering ALAKTORN's general behavior over the past several days, and his overall fuck-you-all attitude in this post, I don't think a few days will be enough. As such, I will be enacting a site ban for ALAKTORN for 95 days, effective as of now. This has been going on far too long as is. I hope ALAKTORN will be able to spend some of this time on some self-reflecting of his own behavior, understand that his own asshole demeanor is responsible for everything that has been going on lately, that people won't tolerate it, and that as such this whole ordeal has been solely his fault and he'll have to take responsibility for his own behavior in the future. Should ALAKTORN return after this, he better show some improvement in his behavior and attitude, and show some humbleness and humility, or else it will be a short-lived return.

As this topic has been veering off from questions to Bisqwit into questions about Christianity in general (not specifically directed at Bisqwit), I've moved posts over to the religious debate thread here: Post #417139 EDIT: I moved some more posts over. If you want to argue about the Bible, not in a question to Bisqwit, do so in the religious debate thread.

This is something that's always going to happen regardless of how short or long the time limit is. Sometimes judging and publishing just don't take that much time and everything is already ready by the time the limit is up.
Tangent wrote:
The guidelines also say to give a chance for rebuttal, which was obviously not done,
This judge guideline refers to a judge having comments about the run that would require answering (like questions). That was not the case here, so this quotation is irrelevant.
Tangent wrote:
and the prevailing attitude on the site is that once a decision has been made, it is final and absolute, and any kind of futher argument against it is sour grapes from anybody who disagrees, or just as often, ignored completely.
The only thing that cannot be reversed is when a movie is published. Judge decisions are not absolute before then. A submission can be accepted then still rejected before publication, or a run can be rejected then unrejected and accepted, and both have happened several times. The problem here is that the window between accepting and publishing was less than an hour, so the window of reversability ended up being rather short. That said, the problem with any sort of waiting period for possible posts is that feedback could appear at any time right after a submission is published (thus past the reversal point). In fact, because of the visibility that comes after publishing a movie, chances are that posts like mattk210's would not have come until after publication regardless of how much time is spent in the queue. Do we need to forestall every submission judgment by even longer on the very off chance that someone might just be aware of an improvement but reads the workbench less frequently than every 72 hours? This is not exactly a common occurrence, mind.
Tangent wrote:
I think the judge guidelines need to either be touched up, or a refresher course offered.
What judge guidelines need touching up, in your opinion?
Tangent wrote:
I feel it'd be really useful if judges actually posted their decisions in threads when they made them instead of being tucked away in an edit on the first page. If you mainly view things through the forum, it's very easy to miss that.
Putting away judge decisions in the middle of a forum topic makes them nearly impossible to keep track of. Perhaps there could be a status update post on accepting a la TASVideoAgent/TASVideosGrue do now on publishing/grueing respectively, but this isn't the topic to go on about something like that.

I'm voting no, sorry. Most of the fights just weren't entertaining enough to hold my interest.
  • Sodom v Sodom: there were a few decent moments, but for a lot of it I didn't really get the feeling I was watching a tool-assisted superplay. There were a few decent combos (and the obligatory mirror match) but for large parts of it I got more the impression of two normal players duking it out than two superplayers.
  • Dan: Taunting after every combo or throw got boring real fast. The rest was fairly standard TAS action, nothing really spectacular.
  • Dan vs Sagat: Again didn't really feel very much like a superplay, there was just too much Sagat spamming specials (Tiger Shot and Tiger Knee in particular). If I want to see fireball wars, I'll just go watch a competitive SF4 Sagat/Guile/Juri match.
  • Chun-Li vs Guy: Finally some fast characters! This made it more interesting to watch than the previous matches, but other than one nice combo by Chun-Li with two supers, the combos didn't get beyond 6 hits. I didn't like some of the action at times, Guy taunting just to get hit and spamming supers looked really scrub-esque, which should not be in a TAS at all.
  • Rose vs Rose: The reflector gimmicks were nice, as was seeing some Custom Combo action at last. However, the double KO gimmick got really old after a few times and the match dragged on far too long.
  • Akuma: Definitely the best part of the run, although the Tatsu spamming got a little grating at times and by the midway point of the campaign Akuma's whole moveset has been shown already and the movie started dragging on. That said, there was a fair amount of good stuff in there, and it was decent overall, but it just took too long to get to this point.
Perhaps my expectations are a bit too high. Mortal Kombat has extensive glitches, Marvel vs. Capcom has infinite combos, even the already published Street Fighter Alpha series playarounds have Dramatic Battle for two-player action and V-ISM Custom Combo action. This movie is just lacking in comparison. Custom Combo was used only once as far as I remember. The rest was 'standard' Street Fighter gameplay, which just isn't enough to keep me entertained for 18 minutes. I'm certain that you put in a fair amount of work into this run, and I hope I won't discourage you from doing more playarounds (I know you have made some great MK playarounds) but this one isn't it for me. So I'm voting no.

This is a 1985 arcade game ported to NES, also known as Penguin-Kun Wars. I just randomly stumbled upon it earlier in the evening and found it pretty fun to play. You play as a penguin in some sort of tournament where you play games with balls against other animals. The basic and most reoccurring kind of game goes as follows: two animals are opposite a table and the goal is to roll balls (5 on each side initially, so 10 total) to the other side, without getting hit by any stray ball (as it'll stun you for several seconds). A player wins a game if all balls are in the enemy field, or if they have the lowest amount of balls on their field after 60 seconds. Other games include versions of Pong and Whack-a-Mole with similar principles or controls, and one like the normal game but with bombs instead. More TASing-related, I found a quirky physics glitch where if you have two balls collide at a specific positioning, they both bounce in the same direction with one of them at a 45 degree angle. With this, and a little enemy manipulation, it's possible to pull off a perfect game against (at least) the first opponent. See the gfycat for a quick showcase. http://gfycat.com/WellmadeMinorFrigatebird And a quick WIP which beats the first opponent (out of 4): (2 standard ball games and one Pong game) http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/25267990153368658

I've found sufficient proof that this is another alt account attempting to dodge a ban evasion. As a banned user you are still not welcome here. Be gone. Some things cannot be hidden, no matter how much you try with VPNs and such.

Your wording was ambiguous. Don’t try to act as if what you wrote was perfectly fine, right after calling me out when I did the same thing.
There were clearly multiple people who were unaware of the concept of fake lag - you and Plush, the latter of whom's comment I referred to. There's no reason to assume I was exclusively talking to you. Also I never called out your writing, I only called out your admissions to shitposting, of which there were multiple besides the one you are referring to. Now drop this silly issue.

If other emulators count it as real lag that makes my question of why BizHawk doesn’t all the more relevant. Oh well…
Because fake lag isn't real lag.

You mentioned something I’ve said right before saying that, so you may want to rephrase it if that’s not what you meant.
You = plural in this context. Anyhow, to keep this discussion vaguely on topic, PSXjin and PCSX-rr show "fake lag" frames as actual lag frames. You may notice that when a game "lags" in PSXjin, it still renders and updates as usual, although it won't accept input. (Not entirely sure if Tenchu happens to be lag free, but for most if not all games I've run on PSX, this has been true)

"Fake lag"/no-input lag is not an uncommon thing with PSX games. Just because you never heard of it doesn't mean the emulator is "extra fucked". Just like normal lag, it's just lag that is there at times and you just have to deal with it. It has nothing to do with emulator inaccuracies or emulator faults or whatever.

More (implicit) acknowledging that you are deliberately shitposting. You are responsible for derailing this thread. We're done here.
