Decided to pick up SSBM in Dolphin and try out some TASing the other day. Here's one new little Event Mode TAS (Event 28). Link to video I may do some more things like this in the future. EDIT: Updated Event 28 video with a 0.11 seconds improvement (changed the ending). Old one for reference

BTW, if I want to learn to TAS Super Mario 64, should I learn with Mupen or Bizhawk?
BizHawk is highly recommended. Mupen64-rr, while many SM64 veterans will swear by it, is an outdated, unstable, inaccurate and just downright bad emulator compared to present day's standards. BizHawk is under active development, has more stable emulation, features an improved N64 emulation core, better video capturing tools, and has vastly more features, such as native memory watching tools, input editing suites, lua scripting support, and more. On TASVideos, support for Mupen64-rr is set to be phased out within the next year and a half or so - which, while it does not affect SM64 so much because its movies can be converted to work on BizHawk, might turn out problematic if you ever intend to submit a run to TASVideos of any other N64 game.

Have we gotten any agreement as to how this movie should've been published, regarding obsoletions etc.? I still stand by my opinion that the previous run should stay published as a 100% category. EDIT: This is why this question should be asked and answered before accepting a movie, not after.

No, he's absolutely right. I had intended to write the following comment about the previous run's submission: "Why would you cost yourself frames in order to show off a glitch? This is obviously a Vault run, so anyone will be able to obsolete your run just by removing those wasted frames. The glitch isn't that impressive that it's worth losing frames over." I never did, and then my jaw dropped when I saw that it was published non-Vault. The cut scenes and walking to the mini-games take longer than the action, and the "action" is just four boring mini-games. The previous run should never have been published outside of the Vault and, barring some amazing glitch (ideally one that skips almost all of the cutscenes), there is probably nothing that you or anyone else can do to make it entertaining. I second the motion to downgrade.
The previous run was sent to Moons because viewer response was generally surprisingly positive, with user comments, votes and ratings all indicating that. The minigames aren't the greatest, but I suppose the game just has an endearing appearance, which can also be a relevant factor. That said, since the previous run was good enough for Moons, why would this run, which is just basically the same except ten seconds faster, not be? Why would this run have to be 'downgraded' compared to the previous run?

Note that BizHawk comes with a lua script (M64_reader.lua) which can read .m64 movies from Mupen64-rr and play them back to be recorded as BizHawk movies. M64_Reader is verified to work with Super Mario 64, but not Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask. No other games have been verified to work or not work for now. This means that Super Mario 64 TASes can still be made in Mupen64-rr and submitted; they can be converted to BizHawk movies for submission.

I see your point. Though even if some people still prefer using Mupen, and if their SM64 movies can be converted to BizHawk anyway, Mupen is still a horrible and deprecated emulator. It is highly recommended for everyone to move over to BizHawk anyway at some point. If there is any feature Mupen has or fault BizHawk has, I'm sure the developers of the latter would love to know about it so they can fix it for any possible Mupen switchers.

LOL I can't believe there's still people who force TASers to use Biz. If someone personally prefers mupen then it just means we're doing m64 conversion to bk2 in the end. There's nopoint whatsoever on TASing with Biz if you prefer mupen. Stop with your Biz bullshit already.
This works for SM64, but I'm pretty sure it didn't work for the Zelda games, or most other games. And there's still the fact that Mupen causes enough desyncs that making a 100% OoT run is apparently impossible in Mupen, and yet the TASers prefer to splice runs instead, which means the TASes technically are not even valid. I mean, they choose to do that, and I'm fine with that, but we just think that is an extremely silly and/or counterproductive thing to do.

Is that glitch even legal? It looked to me you broke the 4th wall and entered the textureless world, which can only be done by reaching insane blj speed (65536 speed IIRC). However, that glitch crashes the game on an N64. Yes, you could try and use the reasoning that it works on VC, but that is an emulator, the name Virtual Console kind of gives it away.
This has been covered in the explanation document (EDIT: here); the game only freezes on console when the camera goes out of bounds. If the camera stays in (by holding the camera with R, for instance), it doesn't freeze on console.

The previous run had poor ratings and was put in the Vault as a result of that. Is this run significantly different? EDIT: Looking at the viewer comments, with comments like "weak yes vote", "voting yes for vault", "long segments of it rather forgettable" on the yes votes, I'd take the poll results with a slight grain of salt.

The YouTube description has a lengthy pastebin document (credited to Tyler Kehne (or TMK on TASVideos)) with all the information about the moat door skip.
Samlaptop wrote:
Does it like like it will be possible to do it in a 0 star TAS?
This question is answered in said document:
Tyler Kehne wrote:
Although the only proven way at this time to enter VCUtM with the moat raised is with hyperspeed flying (which requires 10 stars for the wing cap), we're working on a faster 0-star method that will hopefully make this strat viable for an updated 0 stars TAS. Even without this, we expect sub 5 0 star times due to an impending PU improvement in BitFS!
So it's not quite there for any% yet, but they're working on it.

Judging by the time, I presume that this is like this rejected submission: #4495: paosidufygth's PSX Rockman Complete Works: Rockman in 15:49.85, except five seconds faster. The previous run was rejected because this version of the game (which is just an emulator of the NES game) did not offer anything new that would make it stand out from a NES run. Is this five seconds faster run any different in that regard?

Variety is good, but we shouldn't forget to take into account the individual qualities of each Star candidate. Two runs from the same franchise or even the same game can be starred for vastly different reasons, and putting arbitrary limits on stars per franchise or game means you'll have to make arbitrary choices between different qualities. ("Which run should we give a Star, the 100% run or the warped run? How do we choose between this?") Case in point, Aria of Sorrow "all souls" is currently starred because of its display of heavy luck manipulation, while "Julius all bosses" is nominated for a star because of its fast-paced action and zipping. Do we have to choose between starring a movie featuring heavy luck manipulation or starring a movie featuring fast zipping action, just because they share the same game? Just some food for thought.
