One question though, Mothrayas. What if a team discovers something like ACE, or a game-end glitch?
If a team discovers a game-end glitch, that team would probably win by default (as it would be much faster than any other run). I probably would also award a honorary win at least for the team that clears the game in the fastest time without game-end glitching. Or maybe I'll do the reverse, to make sure the contest will remain competitive. I'm not entirely sure yet.

WIP 5 is done, clearing the same stage as WIP 3, except with a bossfight this time. Hexing from that WIP didn't work because of lag, so some parts are slightly different. At least this time the encode is in 60fps, so there's that I guess? Link to video User movie #18806937519664250 Up next are the three intermission fortress stages.

I agree that he should become a Vested Editor. (Note that Vested Editors are not staff, so this technically is off topic here.)

I won't join. I am the host and judge for this contest, it wouldn't be fair if I joined. Got4n/adelikat team has been added, now that adelikat has confirmed his participation and teamup on IRC. As a team of 2, you didn't specify whether you're open to another member or not, so I'll just see how it will work out.

I'm noticing most people who sign up don't actually specify anything beyond that. I will just assume by default for those people that they want to be randomly assigned to teams when the contest starts. I'd just like to make sure that you're aware you do have the choice of forming teams yourselves with other people and sign up as that team, without having to be randomly put into teams. But if that's what everyone (who didn't specify anything) is going for, that is fine too. Again, just wanting to make sure you know you have that option.

Remember, it's a team contest - you won't be up alone for it. You will have one or two team members joining you, with whom you will be able to back each other up and help each other out. Also, I would say there is no shame even if you end up in last place. It is working on (and completing) the run with your team altogether that counts :)

DREAM TEAM CONTEST 5 (Be sure to read the rules, particularly the sign-up rules, before signing up!) It's been a while since we've had a Dream Team Contest. The last one was in late 2011, about 3 years ago now. We figured it's time to start running a new one again. So yeah, this will be the fifth edition of TASVideos' Dream Team Contest. The basic idea remains the same as usual:
  1. You sign up as a team (or sign up to be put in a team).
  2. When sign-ups are done, the teams are given a game to TAS.
  3. The teams create their TASes and submit them before a given deadline.
  4. The team whose TAS clears the game fastest wins. Their names will be engraved in Dream Team Contest history, and their TAS is to be submitted to the site.
Sounds simple and fun enough, right? Game and emulator rules The game for this contest is yet to be revealed. When it is revealed, I will put checksums here of the ROM the movie has to sync on. See further below for details about the game. Yes, that means unlike some previous DTCs there won't be game suggestions or polls. That said, I will base the game choice on its suitability for this contest: having the game be simple enough to run but with enough room for diversity in tactics, etc. Basically, it should be a good test for common platformer TASing skills and tricks. Some details to know about the game:
  • It is a NES game
  • It is a platformer
  • Estimated TAS time is approximately between 15 and 20 minutes.
For the emulator, any FCEUX or BizHawk version is allowed. You can use anything you want, but the end result will have to be a submittable movie file, and it has to sync on any official FCEUX or BizHawk release. (In short, just follow the site movie rules on this matter). For BizHawk, both the NESHawk and QuickNES cores are accepted. The game does not run in QuickNES; BizHawk will default to NESHawk instead. Keep this in mind if you are doing your run on BizHawk. Sign-up/Team rules To sign up, just post in this thread that you want to participate. You can sign up as either a team, or as an individual. Individuals will be randomly assigned into teams (either added to existing teams or forming entirely new teams) when the competition starts. If you already have a team, please state the names of your team mates when signing up, and (optionally) a team name. Note that teams must have between 2 and 3 members. Keep in mind that unlike previous Dream Team Contests, the (maximum) team size is brought down from 4 to 3. When signing up a team, I would prefer if all team members individually post to sign-up and confirm they will participate as a team. Finally, when signing up as a team of 2 members, please state whether or not you want to leave your last spot open for another member. If you leave it open, it may or may not be filled depending on how the random draw for the individual sign-ups will work out. TAS Movie rules The run goal is to beat the game in the fastest time, with all tricks and techniques allowed. In the event an ACE/game-ending glitch is discovered, competition will be held for both the fastest run using such a glitch, as well as the fastest run that avoids using such a glitch and clears the game by clearing every stage normally. More on this will be announced in the event a trick of this caliber is discovered and known. Movies are to be submitted by uploading the movie file to userfiles (be sure to upload it as a hidden file!) and having one of the team members send me the link to the movie file via a private message. Be sure to also state the emulator version/revision and emulator settings (such as BizHawk core) the movie is to be run on. In case you found an improvement after submitting, you are allowed to resubmit as often as you wish, provided it is sent before the final deadline. If you submit more than once, only the latest submitted version will be considered. UPDATE: Due to concerns about the integrity/security of uploading movie files to userfiles, I will accept (and recommend) uploading your movies at external sites, such as microstorage (if using FCEUX), dropbox, mediafire, or any other upload site. I do still require the movie to be sent by PM before the deadline, with emulator version/revision used and emulator settings for syncing if needed. UPDATE2: As an additional alternative, teams can submit their movie by e-mail to dtc5submission@gmail.com. The movie submitted for the contest obviously has to clear the game by reaching the credits without further input. Just make sure the movie file is in accordance with the site movie rules. To prevent ambiguity in movie length, movies are timed by how fast the credits are reached, not by last input. The winning team will submit their movie to the site. Schedule
  1. Sign-ups will close on Sunday 23rd November 2014, 23:59 UTC.
  2. The competition starts the next day, on Monday 24th November 2014, 21:00 UTC. This is when the final team composition will be revealed and the game will be revealed.
  3. The movie deadline will be Saturday 31st January 2015, 23:59 UTC. In other words, the teams will have about 10 weeks for their run. This is significantly longer than prior Dream Team Contests, but I want to make sure that the teams will be able to make a reasonably optimized movie and finish it before the deadline, while also not giving them too much time pressure for their movie.
  4. After the deadline, results will be evaluated and posted as soon as possible, but I am not setting any dates for it yet.
Additionally I would like to monitor progress in some way, to try and make sure teams don't fall too far behind and/or end up not submitting. However, this is yet to be figured out. Tips
  • Communication with your team is essential! Set up an IRC channel, or Skype group, or anything similar with your team and make sure to keep up communication with your team.
  • Try to keep a consistent working pace up when working on the run. If you end up slacking off until the end, you may find yourself unable to finish the run in time.
That all said...time to start signing up now! Sign-ups are closed now.

The game is Metal Force for the Famicom/NES. Metal Force is an unlicensed game developed by Open Corp. (the same developers who made Buzz and Waldog) and released in 1994 in South Korea. It is of surprisingly solid quality for an unlicensed title. It controls somewhat similarly to classic Mega Man, except you have two different weapons which you can switch between and upgrade by collecting certain powerups from enemies. Besides that, it is a linear adventure with 7 missions, and a boss battle at the end of each mission. The stages of each mission are quite expansive and packed with enemies and obstacles, which, combined with the weapon choice, means there are a lot of different ways to approach each mission. Submissions (like site wiki pages) actually do have their own edit history. This submission's edit history can be seen here (or by going to the submission page and selecting "View submission text history", and from it you can see that he dropped it on November 1st, in fact mere hours after he claimed it earlier that day.

Bump! I was reminded of this topic after I got some interesting messages on YouTube. I'm guessing they were banking on that at least some of the recipients would be named Alex, meet the same girl at both a party and a gym at the same time, of whom they don't know the name but do know she had a page on a website and they'd get "something" going. I initially wasn't even sure whether it was a scam, just that regardless of whether it was real or not, I definitely would not want to click that link.

Well SMB warp has 9739 for 5 minutes and that game is just pressing right (I think).
I like how your metric of comparison for rerecord count is literally one of the most optimized movies on the site. And no, that run is definitely not just pressing right. If it were, it wouldn't have been improved and published over 15 times. 2D Mario games generally have quite a bit more movement complexity and tricks than similar 2D platformers, and SMB1 is no exception.

I am not taking the pro-publication posts that do not mention difficulty as "direct counterweight" to the anti-easy-difficulty posts. It is just that the latter group wasn't sizable enough to convince me this run should be rejected for violating a site preference/guideline.

Might I ask why? Reading through the thread gives me a very strong impression against publication.
It's true, and I did consider whether this run should be rejected for a while. Ultimately though, I don't think the reception against the difficulty is bad enough to warrant outright rejection. There were only really two or three people who were particularly vocal about the chosen difficulty and had it influence their opinion on whether the run should be published. Samsara: I see your stance, but I am very sure you could be much more mature about it.

There is a guideline about selecting the hardest difficulty, and for this run, it is indeed applicable, but it can be bended in a positive way, just like the cheat restriction guideline can be.
While I agree with the judging verdict for this movie in general, I don't think it is right to compare difficulty modes to cheat codes. Selecting the hardest difficulty is a movie guideline - we do accept runs that don't do this, although it is still much preferred that it be done, and movies that do adhere to the guideline can obsolete movies that don't. Avoiding cheat codes however is a rule, and generally movies that use cheat codes without a particularly good reason are swiftly rejected. The GT code run, for example, was accepted because with the cheat code came a completely unique route to the other Super Metroid runs, and culminated with an arbitrary execution glitch that was practically unheard of prior to its submission. A similar thing goes with other runs using cheat codes (see this post by nitsuja in 2011 for a good sum-up of cases where using cheat codes was acceptable). We don't accept runs with cheat codes just because of being flexible with the rules; we accept them because they do something completely unique. Difficulty changes like in this run do not do something completely unique, so they are not really comparable. Bottom line: The cheat code rule is way different from the difficulty guideline, so they shouldn't be compared. The Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon example looks to fit the same mold as this one, though, so you can use that as an example instead.

I notice that sheela901's encoder logo (at least on YouTube) refers to the nonexistent site "http://TASVideo.org", instead of "http://TASVideos.org". There's a subtle, but important difference there. The same issue also seems to appear in the encodes for [2700] Genesis Duke Nukem 3D by Dimon12321 in 20:03.75 and [2708] NES Shinobi by MESHUGGAH in 07:36.41.

This is minor, but my right ear would consider it a viable speed-entertainment tradeoff to delay a few frames before entering a new area if it avoids getting a music track that only plays on one stereo channel. Just throwing that out there :)

For some reason I can't switch to HD in either that Mario Circuit nor the flicker video. It just shows the spinning wheel forever.
Which browser are you using? As far as I know, only Chrome is officially supported. (Though I'm hearing it works in some other browsers as well, but not in others)

Next WIP. Also testing out the newly available 60fps YouTuber. Looks like it's working (on the YouTube page itself, at least). Link to video User movie #18408318382943953 World 5 is a fun world. Some fun in-stage strategies, especially in 5-2.

Incidentally, I was toying around with Mario 4 - Space Odyssey a couple days ago. These games could definitely make for a quirky run or two (though probably still Vault). Especially the music stands out (and the horrible physics, but you notice less of that when watching a TAS). (EDIT: and the comically horrible pre-level images, of course) I don't currently have intentions to run it, though. But it would be fun if anyone else might pick it up.

WIP 4: Plant Man Grass boss stage Link to video User movie #18378789535131659 The death in the middle of the stage looks completely nonsensical, but it's actually skipping the miniboss like the previous stage. It turns out it's possible to avoid loading the boss by being far enough down to the bottom of the screen. (I knew it's possible to skip loading the boss by being horizontally out of bounds, which is done in most stages in Zook Z as well as Zook 2, but this method can't be used in this stage nor the previous one due to how the stage layout works).

It triggers those flags by doing out-of-bounds memory writes on room visit data though. I'd count it as memory corruption.

Yeah, nope. (I can already tell from the title this topic will go nowhere, like previous useless topics like this. So I'll just lock this one preemptively.)
